I thought this was horrible. the first guy to sing honestly didn't have a great singing voice. I felt like it was a joke or that conan found a band like Jordan schlansky's personality. Watch enough America's Got Talent and you can tell.

Okay, please don't be arrogant and brush them off. They aren't everybody's cup of tea, but you shouldn't say they're bad after only one thing.:
A: America's Got Talent is probably the worst way to mark the skill of a singer. All the winners sing pop, the system is rigged, you sign your rights to everything away to the company if you enter, and some winners are pretty crappy and generic anyway.
B: These men are aging and have pursued what they wanted to all their life. That's going to strain the voice. Either way, they still sing fine, at least when they're really warmed up. And anyway, its a different type of singing they do, it isn't supposed to be over-the-top like you see now in pop and modern rock. Alternative is quiet, monotone, or very emotional, but not screaming at the top of ones' lungs.
C: Actually listen to some studio work from their most recent album. It is really amazing and very skilled, though pretty morbid. A good example would be Turn Back the Hands, All Time What, or Jackie the Clipper. Alternative normally focuses on conceptual songs.
They've gotten a ton of deserved exposure by getting videos and making music for TV title sequences and even a few songs and compositions for Laika pictures.
How long has it been since the band formed? Oh, you know, just 36 years.

The first time I watched Conan was when They Might be Giants played on Late Night. It had to be 93, 94. It’s not like Jay Leno or Letterman would have them on. I fell in love instantly with Conan and Andy. I miss the good old days of “ In the Year 2000” and all of the funny skits they did back then.

Leno actually did have them on, around the time of Flood they played Birdhouse with the house band.

@C M Technically that was when Leno was filling in for Carson. He did have them on around 2000 or something when Malcolm in the Middle started.

First television appearance was on Letterman. He usually had some awesome bands.

There is a recording of them playing with Doc and the tonight show band on YT. It’s Leno guest hosting. John Linnel is so excited and it’s an amazing rendition of birdhouse.

I've been a fan of these guys for a long, long time. I love that they played Self Called Nowhere.

What I admire about They Might Be Giants is that despite other people's expectations, they do their own thing. Be yourself. Be original.

Partially. But mainly, it is just before your time, morbid as hell, and they are the 'giants' of alternative music. They are still the giants of alternative because it is a dying art and nobody has done it better.
