They Might Be Giants Last Wave Comments
This album makes me feel like tmbg has some regrets and are finally feeling old
is that true Jon? is that true other Jon? If it’s not please say so
It's John and John.
Well his name is John, but you might know him better as John from They Might Be Giants
Nice funeral march, imho
Look, I know it's some Bad Lip Reading nonsense and I love it, but this album imprinted on me during peak Infinity War anxiety and I can't hear it as anything else. "I'm so tired of waiting, my heart is cold, the sky is dark, I'm curled up in the ashes. We die alone, we die afraid, we live in terror, we're naked and alone, we die." That's the Snapture. Right there. And it's so raw.
I never got the Avengers association since I heard the track alone when it came out online. The lyrics hit me as so profound and very TMBG, plus it was great having another John and John duet, but the alt./demo version got on my nerves a bit when I first heard that. Then the Walk this Way thing came out and it should have clicked with me.
Wow, what a way to close an album. One of their best albums, really.
Jason Stolaruk I would definitely have to agree. I’m usually skeptical of my older favorite bands’ new stuff but they did not disappoint.
I really wish they played this in concert vs. showing the video
Saw them play this in Ottawa on November 1.
I get this as an introvert: I'm loving this song and respectfully bowing and backing out of the room.
This is growing on me as one of TMBG's best album closers. Nearly on par with The End Of The Tour.
WE DIE ALONE
WE DIE AFRAID
WE LIVE IN TERROR
WE'RE NAKED AND ALONE
AND THE GRAVE IS THE LONELIEST PLACE!!!
@Aquarius Freewater 🎺🎺~~
NAKED AND ALONE, WE DIE...
This band makes me sad that I have anxiety and rarely leave the house. Have wanted to see them every time they've come to town since 1988 and have never been able to :-( . Rock on John & John. Love you guys.
They came to my town twice in 26 years.. I'm so happy I got to see them this time!
Sorry to hear that it's affecting your life dramatically. I don't love medications, but have you considered something of the sort?
If you're interest in watching this with the Walk this Way video its synced to but don't know why it isn't properly synced. It is, but the Last Wave starts 21 seconds into the video. (I calculated from the antlers part.)
what do you mean by this?
Last Wave was originally written by watching Walk This Way on mute and making a new song to fit the mouth movements. The result was really good, so they re-made it as this version for the album. This version doesn't sync as well with Walk This Way, but it stands better on its own (the original Last Wave features silly voices).
You can find the original experiment version, synced to the Walk This Way music video, if you do a google search for "last wave vimeo".
I think C0rrUpt3d Sp1r1t was trying to sync this version to the same video -- apparently he made it work by starting it 21 seconds late.
Thanks. I've been trying to figure out how this works.
Unfortunately, this version is slightly faster than the song that's synced to the Walk This Way video, so they don't sync.
Cool as fuck
And fuck IS cool.
The verse where Linnell sings "I'm so tired of waiting. My heart is cold" and Flansy responds with "The sky is dark" and in unison "I'm curled up in the ashes."
I get chills every. Single. Time.
Please write more songs with call and response like that -- it works so naturally.
Yup! Beautiful harmony - love it :)
Pure poetry <3
Any song where the two Johns harmonise is a lot of fun.
Such a moving song.
Agreed! 'Spoiler Alert' is some pretty awesome call and response as well... albeit, they're calling from separate cars :-)
this song kills me (pun unintended)-- because it is both so beautiful and fun to sing along with and yet the lyrics don't mesh with the poppy feel. And just when you're thinking, damn, the guys have gone and written a really sad thing, you get to that part about antlers ("antlers are what I need you to buy")-- hunh?? Hysterical. Can't stop listening to the entire CD, endlessly. I'm sure my neighbors hate me now.
.... have you not seen the video they wrote the song for?
i think this is my favorite tmbg album. i'm not kidding.
also please never let curt go.
not a fox I agree, I love this album. The Bright Side might be my new all time favorite song.
I agree. This album = their rock side the way Lincoln = their quirky side. Not 1 single weak track. And yeah, adding Curt to the mix was brilliant!
Or maybe...... https://vimeo.com/253025437
This catchy refrain has been stuck in my head for weeks now, and I've been merrily singing it to myself, and now my family, friends, and co-workers think I need counseling.
Yo I can't wait for the concert next week 😭👏👏👏
Genius song!!
Most solid album they've had since Nanobots.
their best album since the spine! there i said it!!
This song live is the greatest thing ever, I really hope they post a live version of this eventually XD
I love how upbeat your total bummer songs are.
Wow. I love this song.
The piano chords and muted horn in this song are delicious. Can't wait for y'all to come to SLC.
Good for live shows.
Edit, three months later: According to YouTube, I wrote the throwaway comment, "Good for live shows", three months ago, Feb 2018. So, about 20 mins ago I put Chip the CHiP on and switched on AutoPlay, thinking that I'd get a selection from I Like Fun, or at least a TMBG selection while I did a few domestic chores. When Last Wave played, I stopped what I was doing because I wanted to say that Last Wave was one of the highlights of the Philadelphia show live streamed last weekend (thank you again, wonderful!)
So, I picked up my phone, scrolled down and lo! I saw "Good for live shows", which I had absolutely no memory of writing. And Philly was the first time I heard it 'live'. A small thing, to be sure, but I quite like those inadvertent dovetails.
I have to say I didn’t like it much at first but after a few listens.....wow, it’s one of the greatest TMBG songs!
This sounds like it could be part of a musical
I think the Johns should open a School of Rock for all Ages. I'd attend like a mofo, as the kids say.
love that sax
It's a trumpet. (No less loveable ;)
Is it possible to buy a poster sized print of that art anywhere?
I appreciate all the effort John put into singing this song. He still sounds good in his late 50's.
blarch2 Which one? Haha
@Squid Man502 Yes
AceJVids I’m not going to wrap my brain around any other answer than this.
YEEEEEEE
I love you guys
cool song
I have loved your music forever. I will be 60 soon, and i'm still dancing and singing to everything you do. Can't wait for your new album!
Thanks for the up tempo downer :\
Featuring special guest Jean-Paul Sartre on muted trumpet.
Who is also naked, alone, and afraid in a meaningless recording studio.
This excites the fan.
Is the live show in Ireland going to be over 18s only?
wow you can really hear the piano in this version as opposed to the dial a song version
reminds me a bit of Death Cab for Cutie
Nice hearing the Johns singing together on the same song! Doesn't happen much anymore.
A little too soon to call this a Classic? Maybe, but I don't care. An Instant Classic.
I like it! Something about it reminds me of Tears for Fears.
This album sounds like it's going to be another John Henry. Which is no bad thing!
Like if the melon sent you
Wicked awesome song! Can't wait till the album comes out!
Please sing together more. You complement each other perfectly.
Sounds a lot like the else album
jude l Which is a really good thing.
those GWEN towers and CHEMTRAILS tho. #Geoengineering
What a happy happy song! NOT! Still love it tho! :)
Stripped down production + horns + dark, ominous lyrics = major John Henry vibe
Another gem boys! Wow!!!
Amazing song! TMBG has unlimited ability to surprise! :)
Saw you guys in Glasgow earlier this year and now even more looking forward to your visit to Edinburgh in 2018 . Great stuff this by the way. Cant wait for the new album.
Interesting song. I can't wait for the new CD to come out...
Thanks TMBG for being so consistently awesome for all these years! Looking forward to the new album and seeing you live again for the umpteenth time!
So. Anyone else dancing around the room singing the chorus over the outro as loudly as they can?
MootMatter i am now
HOLY FUCKING SHIT. This is the best TMBG since Appollo 18.
whoa there! what a jam. ♥
Holy... SHIT!!! Wow, what a song! John's voice is stunning on this song! I've never heard such a balls-out, intense vocal from him before and I'm absolutely floored!!! VERY soulful performance.
how long has this band been together? are they trying to set some kind of record or something
Since 1982
"Gosh, thanks for this new TMBG track, big brother! Somehow you knew exactly what I'd like."
"And so another CGNU research project comes to a successful conclusion. We have accurately predicted the playlists of angsty emo siblings."
"FOLLOW-ON GRANT! FOLOWWW-ONNNN GRAAAAAAANT!"
I can't wait for the new album!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
first :3
Love it cant wait
maybe get a cassette release too? ;D
also how the hell has this not any comments yet holy hell
Catchy and Up-lifting.
I knew this was gonna be good but this is so much better then I expected
You folks just keep on rocking it! I remember growing up to your songs in the 80's and 90's, and now my kids are growing up to your whimsical tunes. My 4 year old loves your music. Rock on!
Sweet! I like it a lot, this is awesome
Is it ok if I make a couple of cover videos for a few of your songs?
Is there any way you will release backing tracks of your songs for Karaoke purposes?? Thanks!
I've been itching for an instrumental track for Pet Name, for karaoke, for some years now.
The lyrics remind me a bit of Don't Let's Start, but sounds absolutely nothing like it. This album is shaping up to sound incredibly different, but I'm digging it a lot so far! It feels like forever since we got a legit duet with the Johns.
Seth Boles "everybody dies frustrated and sad anf that is beautiful...." 😁
Ahh, first. I know that's immature, but I just had to say that. Anyway, it's good to see this new album won't disappoint!
how could anyone dislike this song? super rad vibe.
Oh my god you're going to kill it again this year aren't you
I've been playing their new song All Time What on repeat. Yeah, I'm gonna say that they will!
Brilliant, as always.
Nice cell tower palm trees, Giants.
They actually have those things in some US cities. Trying to beautify the towers. I know I saw them in Vegas.

A thought of uncertain informational value, yet intricately creative
best i've heard from the album yet(granted that's only 2 songs)
Hyped for this album!
Excellent.
First comment. These guys are still great after more than three decades. These guys deserve more recognition than they get.
e x c i t i n g
wow lovely.
Another great song!
While somewhat unrelated to the song, there's something vaguely offputting about those totally-a-palm-tree cell phone towers.
In a cool way.
not a cool way. research 5g technology, geoengineering, flouride in your water and what it does to your pineal!! research anything!!
Wow. Pleasantly surprised. The lyrics seem grittier than their other songs
How many of their songs have you listened to?
From their very first album "no one in the world ever gets what they want and that is beautiful. Everybody dies frustrated inside and that is beautiful."
This is fantastic! Even _more_ hyped for the new album!
Thirst
...ing for some new TMBG, this is a nice song from a group of geniuses.
I've nothing but respect and admiration for you guys. You and your music has had an incommunicably positive effect on me and my life, so thanks. Can't wait for the new album.
Fantastic. I wonder how you guys maintain such solid consistency even in the year 2017.
Ey new sonk
I immediately replayed it. I really like this track.
Damn, was expecting something cheery. Thanks for reminding me I'm gonna die naked and alone. As if I didn't need any more problems.
These guys are pretty good.
Death sounds like a fun time. But bring a friend.
well this is exciting
This feels quite different from the usual stuff, still great though.
first? Also awesome song.
This is quite different from the Last Wave from Outrun.
