They Might Be Giants - I Can Hear You Lyrics

I Can Hear You by They Might Be Giants. Made at the Edison Laboratories.

I can hear you
Just barely hear you
I can just barely hear you

This is a warning
Step away from the car
This car is protected by Viper

Guess where I am
I'm calling from the plane
I'll call you when I get there

You won't hear a buzz
But I'm buzzing you in
I'm buzzing you in

What's your order?
I can super-size that
Please bring your car around

I can hear you
Just barely hear you
I can just barely hear you

    Three people can't hear you.

They describe how awkward it was to record this, they had to sing and play as loud of possible and only use very simple words due to how fuzzy it would all come out. Still it's amazing how it was recorded with such a primitive device.

    J.... D....

To be honest, they've had experience recording for answering machines. This can't be much worse.

    J.... D....

It's the same tech that's used today for vinyl records.

    Absolutely awful

i disagree. there's something about the poor quality and plain, empty-sounding lyrics that give it a melancholy feel. i enjoy this song, even if it's far from being one of the best tmbg songs

Your opinion.. for me this is one of my favorite songs.

    and no one asked honey🥰

This gives me a better impression of earlier artists! They weren't allowed to take risks, because it had to be palatable or there was so small a market they actually could dictate your well being!

    "I'll call you when I get there…"

I have no idea why, but that line always makes me feel sad.

    He never arrived ;-;

Even now, 18 years later, drive through intercoms can be hard to hear.  They're better than they were, but you'd think we could do better.

It took me a second listen to realize that the lyrics all describe some form of technology that allows the transmission of voices. Pre-recorded voice for a car alarm, telephone on plane, intercom, drive-thru intercom system, it all ties together quite well.

    T.... O....

Better still, they pertain to crackly low-quality voice transmission technology!

    @ExcessiveSpareTime
I'm surprised they didn't use a subway public address system, even wax cylinders sound clearer than those things.

    T.... O....

@ExcessiveSpareTime Recorded on an actual Wax Cylinder!

    T.... O....

That's the joke.. I can just barely hear you

Recorded by my friend Pete Dilg.

  10. I.... ....

Really a beautiful little song about human progress, with all the more beauty in the fact that it's recorded on such an early instance of said human progress.

I had no idea this was recorded on an Edison wax cylinder. Awesome!
