They Might Be Giants - Ana Ng Lyrics

Make a hole with a gun perpendicular
To the name of this town in a desk-top globe
Exit wound in a foreign nation
Showing the home of the one this was written for
My apartment looks upside down from there
Water spirals the wrong way out the sink
And her voice is a backwards record
It's like a whirlpool and it never ends

Ana Ng and I are getting old
And we still haven't walked in the glow of each other's majestic presence
Listen Ana hear my words
They're the ones you would think I would say if there was a me for you

All alone at the '64 World's Fair
Eighty dolls yelling "Small girl after all"
Who was at the Dupont Pavilion?
Why was the bench still warm? Who had been there?
Or the time when the storm tangled up the wire
To the horn on the pole at the bus depot
And in the back of the edge of hearing
These are the words the voice was repeating:

Ana Ng and I are getting old
And we still haven't walked in the glow of each other's majestic presence
Listen Ana hear my words
They're the ones you would think I would say if there was a me for you

When I was driving once I saw this painted on a bridge:
"I don't want the world, I just want your half"

They don't need me here, and I know you're there (don't need me)
Where the world goes by like the humid air (world goes by)
And it sticks like a broken record
Everything sticks like a broken record
Everything sticks until it goes away (it goes home)
And the truth is, we don't know anything (don't know)

Ana Ng and I are getting old
And we still haven't walked in the glow of each other's majestic presence
Listen Ana hear my words
They're the ones you would think I would say if there was a me for you

Ana Ng and I are getting old
And we still haven't walked in the glow of each other's majestic presence
Listen Ana hear my words
They're the ones you would think I would say if there was a me for you

Ana Ng and I are getting old
And we still haven't walked in the glow of each other's majestic presence
Listen Ana hear my words
They're the ones you would think I would say if there was a me for you

They Might Be Giants could have made great schoolhouse rock songs!

Just was watching the movie Yes Man and heard this song playing at Norman's Harry Potter costume party. I paused Netflix, opened up YouTube, typed in TMBG and this was the 1st song listed.

    Yes! I found it!

I'm almost 40. I think I may have finally met Ana Ng, you guys.

Great song, great video.. such a terrible shame, such a horrible way to start a song about a Vietnamese woman: “make a hole with a gun perpendicular...exit wound...” whether subconsciously or not it evokes the sickening video of the Vietnamese general shooting the prisoner, perpendicularly on the skull... the exit wound, the blood spurting out... this SOOO didn’t need to be in this random quirky otherwise excellent song... why, john ?

“The song has been well received by numerous critics. Longtime music critic Robert Christgau called it "a beyond-perfect tour de force about a Vietnamese woman they never got to meet."[7]” Wikipedia Ana ng

Back in 1992, I was drunk driving on the campus of Humboldt State and I struck and killed a pedestrian with my car. The car was a Ford Taurus. Well it turns out the girl I killed was a student from overseas named Ana Ng. Anyway, I did 3 months in jail and later my friend told me about the song. Is it it's a pretty cool song brings back memories.

  50. k.... ....

Saw them live at the Beacon NYC late 80s early 90s... they rocked it. This song would be great as speed metal !!!

  51. S.... G....

Seriously TMBG sounded so 90s in the 80s

    S.... G....

I know I'm over a year late but they kind of sound vaguely like 2000s rock to me

Ahh, takes me back to a better time; late 80's/early 90's, listening to WHFS. Good times!

  73. n.... a....

i was legitimately pissed when i found out this song was not about a long-distance relationship. like it describes perfectly the heartache of not always being able to be physically next to your partner, but at the same time being so connected that sometimes you feel like if you just wished hard enough, if you just close your eyes for a second, you'll feel them next to you on the couch, or looking at the sunset and getting butterflies in your stomach over the thought that your partner sees the same sun and probably thinks of you when he looks at the sky - and and the line, 'they don't need me here, and i know you're there' is probably one of the most beautifully simple and sad linnell's ever written,- at least from this point of view of someone who's in a ldr, i think. i just can't get over how incredible these guys are in everything they do. well done, johns. well done.

    n.... a....

Just because John was writing it with that in mind doesn't mean it can't be about that.

  74. N.... G....

My dad would always play this song from the short compilation album "Best of the Early Years," primarily when I was a young child. He would only ever play this and Don't Let's Start, however, because the rest of the songs "paled in comparison" (his words, not mine). Nowadays, both songs take me back to when they were still new to my ears; when I was too young to comprehend the lyrics, but still felt a strange combination of perturbation and comfort from the eccentric vocals and unrefined yet unique instrumentals. Both songs have a kind of raw, unfathomable energy that was characteristic of TMBG's earlier years. It might have been part of the reason my dad enjoyed them so much.
It's been about 2 months now since his death. I haven't cried since, and the most I've felt is strong senses of longing and bittersweet memories. I will always remember him when I listen to either this song or Don't Let's Start, from the few times we discussed them or even sang them together- and most of all, for the fact that he was the one who introduced me to them in the first place. They will always have a place in my heart.
I don't know if TMBG themselves will ever read this, but I'd just like to thank them for having an impact of such great emotional value in my life. An impact that makes me so strongly nostalgic for a time when I didn't even exist.
    Thank you.
