Terry Jacks - Pumpkin Eater Lyrics

A 1954 Ford roars down the road
A 1963 rain pouring as it came
Uphill to the right
Makes a left turn then a right
And maybe yet tonight there will be some time

An apple falling to the ground
Yellowed by the sound
And by the sound down the road
I think it he that goes
Uphill to the light
Makes a left turn then a right
And maybe yet tonight there will be some time

Pumpkin eater just after July
Always comes home in time for the pie
Pumpkin eater just after July
Always comes home in time for the pie

Monday morning brings the light
Something isn’t right
And running down she finds he’s gone
She walks across the lawn
Finds the apple tree
And watches as he leaves
In 1963 as in time

Pumpkin eater Just after July
Always come home in time for the pie
Pumpkin eater just after July
Always come home in time for the pie

@charlyW34 The Beachboys started recording Seasons In The Sun with Terry Jacks producing before Terry and Susan Jacks recorded it. It never got finished so Susan and Terry decided to record it themselves. Later, the Beachboys began recording You Don't Fight The Sea but that was never finished either. Last year, Al Jardine took the old unfinished tape, got all the Beach Boys together to finish it and released it with proceeds going to the victims of the Japanese sunami.

@Lizzpear Hi, I think you may be thinking of Ya Don't Fight The Sea, which the Beach Boys finally did record. Season's was a cover of Jacques Brell with some new english lyrics by Terry, slightly different than the Rod McQuen translation. Cheers

My father wrote this song. It was loosely based on his relationship with his older brother. Terry changed some of the lyrics and made it about a couple. I have always liked this song , and it's cool it's on you tube now . Thanks for the upload.

    Is that true?
Could you send me the real lyrics or chords?
Is this song related to the namesake movie?

I take it a Pumpkin eater is about someone who only ever turns up out of the blue when it’s to their advantage, then disappears again...am I right?..I’m from the UK so excuse my ignorance if I’m wrong.

@tomlynntigard This song wasn't written by Terry Jacks. Terry and Susan approached the Beachboys to record Seasons In The Sun and it never got finished so Susan and Terry recorded it themselves. This song was also on the album.
