This song is about the Bronx child prodigy and genius singer/songwriter LAURA NYRO (1947 - 1997). Nyro is probably only second to Bob Dylan as the most influential singer/songwriter of all time. She performed at Monterey Pop in 1967 along with Hendrix, The Who, Janis Joplin, aged 19. Her first 5 LP's from 1967-1971 are universally rated by critics as between brilliant or a masterpiece. She is not well known to the public as she had no hit records, but others have had massive hits with her songs. However, everybody in the music industry knows her, and she is revered as one of its greatest ever talents. Several songs have been written about her apart from Mean Streets, not including several tribute LP's. Her songs continue to be covered to this day, including by rappers and Kanye West, for example. Her music is for sophisticated ears, being technically complex and very soulful in the singing. The sublime and exquisite beauty of her music brings tears of joy to many listeners - its common among youtube comments of her songs. I discovered Laura 3 weeks ago and I'm an instant convert. She passed in 1997 from ovarian cancer aged 49.

Just discovered another song about Laura, by the Scottish alternative rock band, the Cosmic Rough Riders, the song entitled 'Laura Nyro'.

I would class Nyro more with Joni Mitchell, and Dylan with Phil Ochs,. Though all four have great legacies, Dylan's and Ochs' music is more simple musically. Mitchell and Nyro wrote more complex music. Nyro and Ochs' of course, are the ones that have been overlooked for many years, while Mitchell, and especially Dylan are royalty. Though I appreciate all four, I would consider Nyro the greatest, and the most gifted vocally.

The Beatles used harpsichord on 'In My Life' back in 1966. There is nothing new in pop/rock. Brian Wilson even used a theremin on Pet Sounds.

Its about Laura Nyro, who was raised on the mean street of the Bronx, and used to holiday in the Catskills with her parents as a child.
