Teng, Vienna - The Hymn Of Acxiom Lyrics

Somebody hears you. you know that. you know that.
Somebody hears you. you know that inside.
Someone is learning the colors of all your moods, to
(say just the right thing and) show that you’re understood.
Here you’re known.

Leave your life open. you don’t have. you don’t have.
Leave your life open. you don’t have to hide.
Someone is gathering every crumb you drop, these
(mindless decisions and) moments you long forgot.
Keep them all.

Let our formulas find your soul.
We’ll divine your artesian source (in your mind),
Marshal feed and force (our machines will)
To design you a perfect love—
Or (better still) a perfect lust.
O how glorious, glorious: a brand new need is born.

Now we possess you. you’ll own that. you’ll own that.
Now we possess you. you’ll own that in time.
Now we will build you an endlessly upward world,
(reach in your pocket) embrace you for all you’re worth.

Is that wrong?
Isn’t this what you want?
Amen.

There is a irony in the fact that the person who made this is also a full time employee at McKinsey & Company. A firm that had advised companies like Enron and Valeant, while also advising for institutions like ICE and authoritarian regimes the world over

  3. K.... D....

i just realized this was the ballad in bluecoats 2014. no way. my fav artist and i didn't even realize

  10. G.... J....

    Hot damn that’s good

  11. D.... B....

This shatters my perception of on how good a can song possibly be.

  12. A.... 1....

Can't wait to play this for our home show!
It's our opener and it sounds so amazing!!

  13. J.... K....

Dissonance sounds so good with voices. This piece played on a piano would clash so much more. I guess that's the problem with equal temperament.

  14. K.... M....

We did this my senior year of high school for marching band. We tried to do an a cappella small group at the beginning before the instruments came in, but in the end that was replaced by a brass quartet, which was equally as amazing.

  15. N.... K....

I think the last few lines are the most telling; "is that wrong? Isnt that what you want?"

The system doesn't know the problem. We are the one that asked it to do these things. The problem isn't the system. The problem is us; we suck at knowing what we really want.

    N.... K....

Daniel Gilbert's "Stumbling on Happiness": addresses that very concept.

  16. S.... C....

We played this as the ballad in our show and it was so much fun. The song fit perfectly with our story about healing and rebirth.

    S.... C....

This song has NOTHING to do with healing.

  17. D.... ....

    Absolutely stellar song
I listen to this as I fall asleep
It helps me connect with parts of myself I never knew before
Absolutely gorgeous, I love this song to bits

  18. J.... M....

Why are the lyrics so creepy?

    J.... M....

Because the song is about an intrusive data-mining company.

  19. S.... K....

I'm singing this with my choir, but looking at these comments it's probably because our director is a huge DCI fan. Go figure!

  20. n.... ....

    i love this

  21. T.... H....

    This is decaturs niw

  22. a.... _....

Petition to make this the new U.S. national anthem

  23. E.... L....

i came here because comments on hide and seek by imogen heap said this song sounded similar..... i don’t understand any of these fucking comments all ab blue coats and matching bands lmao

    E.... L....

    https://youtu.be/_qKSdCGd7A4

  24. M.... ....

    Wow...beautiful

  25. V.... ....

Still get chills listening to this - all too relevant with Facebook and Cambridge Analytica

  26. P.... D....

I love this song... i can definitely see the reason why many bands have played it in their show

  27. A.... L....

Very sinister, but also very beautiful

  28. J.... ....

Did this for our marching band show

  29. P.... G....

'Coats aside, this song is fucking TERRIFYING. I'm pretty sure it's about a cult. Take a look at the lyrics.

    P.... G....

Poor Green Whale Guns Books it's about data mining. Vienna has said that she wrote it after a friend told here about a computer program advertisers use

    P.... G....

@Jeff Thomas She wrote it based on first-hand experience. She was once an intern at Acxiom.

  30. J.... T....

Commandants Own..the marine corps bugle corps...also played it. I'd put it even with bluecoats
Starts at 9:20 But the whole show is fantastic
    https://youtu.be/lA29axeU73g.

  31. J.... C....

    This is great and all
    but Bluecoats are better

    sorry

  32. i.... ....

no idea what everyone is saying the in the comments, but my a ccapella group at school is doing this song and i'm pumped

  33. E.... R....

I actually wasn't brought here from the Bluecoats, although I'm a huge fan of them. But our local college has an a capella group and they covered this song and it's bone chilling. Much love for this.

  34. A.... K....

    This song is oddly addicting

  35. N.... ....

Am I the only one here who doesn't care about the Bluecoats version?

    N.... ....

    Apparently.

  36. S.... ....

Can I please get 24 likes? My cat is getting deported because it is undocumented.

  37. S.... C....

Am I the only one who likes this version better than the Bluecoats one?

    S.... C....

Yeah, basically, because the Bluecoats are Drum Corp gods.

    S.... C....

@HufflePuffleKnightOfRage you think they're good in 2019? lol

    S.... C....

@Bill Nye The Nazi Spy I mean, last time I saw them in person was 2019, so...

    S.... C....

@Bill Nye The Nazi Spy I don't think we're allowed to be throwing out words like "bad, not good" when all of the performers from every corps worked incredibly hard, and played their hearts out. Score is one thing, but in my eyes they are all "good"

  38. B.... ....

This song is the reason I became so intrigued in Drum Corps. My first year of marching band, this was our ballad. I didn't know what this song was. So when I got home after practice, I got on YouTube and searched up 'The Hymn Of Acxiom', and obviously the first that came up was 'Bluecoats 2014', and I instantly fell in love with the Corps. When I get out of high school, I wish to march at least 1 summer with the Bluecoats. Over the years, I have grown an emotional bond with this song, and I can't wait to get out of high school and move to Ohio.

  39. T.... D....

    Here's to S.J. Res. 34!

  40. M.... M....

I'm not hear from a marching band thing...someone did a string/woodwind quartet arrangement for this song and I decided to look it up.

  41. R.... D....

    I love band

  42. M.... N....

    Love it!

  43. M.... K....

University of Montana did a really amazing performance of this where they were in a dark room and help up phones to light their face and omgosh it was so amazing <3

    M.... K....

We just did that in our own performance of it. Our director must have seen the same performance of it that the UofM did. It was incredibly effective! Very powerful!

  44. Y.... A....

    adem bat anjir😍😍

  45. E.... B....

Watched it once, now everywhere on my recommended. hehheeheheheh. The irony.

  46. D.... R....

    Bluecoats did it better tbh.

    D.... R....

    this is the original m8

  47. C.... K....

    BLOOOOOOOOOOOO (I'm sorry)

    C.... K....

For the record, even though I came here because of the Bluecoats, I really dig this song

  48. A.... M....

    Snow queen 2016💕

  49. g.... ....

2:12-2:30 is just a mind blowing bridge, but that 'glor' at 2:20 is such an exquisite chord. I'm so pumped to be singing this song this year in an amazing ensemble! :)

    g.... ....

Sadly we sang a different version which is good but no nearly as nice as this version is. :( Still, it was really impactful!

    g.... ....

I got to play the bridge alone as a trombone for my brass ensemble. It felt freaking glorious to play.

    g.... ....

Anybody know what this chord is? It’s the best thing my ears have ever heard

  50. E.... S....

Wait what drum corps performed this? Slow on the uptake, mind blown for approximately the next week. Good on ya Bluecoats and Crusaders.

  51. a.... ....

just thinking about this song being broadcasted all over the world when the singularity happens is giving me chills. wow. okay.

    a.... ....

Yeah, same. The time is approaching fast with blockchain technology and deep learning

  52. T.... M....

All your personal information is being bought and sold online unbeknownst to you.

  53. L.... S....

IMO Oregon Crusaders version of this was WAY overlooked. Plus they added so many "creepy" edges to it to fit their "The Raven" theme

    L.... S....

I agree that it's way overlooked. I loved it alot... That being said.... Bloo did it better

  54. s.... ....

    thank you so much

  55. T.... D....

I can see this as a movie/video game intro or outro, the camera panning out onto a wasteland caused by a robotic takeover

    T.... D....

    just sayin

    T.... D....

    bruh XD

    T.... D....

okay but that would be rad af

    T.... D....

    Horizon anyone?

    T.... D....

    That'd be SICK!!!

  56. i.... ....

whats this song singing about ? :o explain please !

    i.... ....

Its from a database called acxiom's perspective and how it remembers everything and knows you better than you do. She explians it better in the live version👌

    i.... ....

    @Danny Kane alright thanks :)

  57. C.... C....

Came for bloo, stayed for the song.

  58. J.... R....

my band is doing this for our ballad this year
the show is about survival in space so it works

    J.... R....

    That's so cool!

    J.... R....

what school so i can look up a runthrough this fall?

    J.... R....

@The Distant Sun Fossil Ridge High School aka the Panther Regiment

    J.... R....

    same tbh

  59. M.... L....

    How comforting.

    M.... L....

    Apart from the harrowing lyric.

  60. R.... ....

It's amazing how much this really sounds like a hymn

  61. D.... T....

I could see the turrets singing this in Portal III

    D.... T....

if portal 3 was a thing

    D.... T....

    Nano TheWolf

    D.... T....

    Kim Jones

    D.... T....

    I don't blame you.

    D.... T....

“Aperture Science: We do what we must, because we can.”

  62. O.... ....

    Bluecoats > crusaders

    O.... ....

    BLOOOOOO

  63. C.... A....

    Oregon Crusaders ?

  64. A.... L....

I guess I am one of few that heard this song for the first time from a non-marching band / DCI related source? Aka... Spotify :)

    A.... L....

Yeah pretty much lol. Marching band op

    A.... L....

+Andrew Ladd thank you Andrew for being with our band for marching season

  65. C.... K....

Having seen Vienna do this live, and never heard of Drum Corps until just now, I'm amused that it seems to be the other way around for almost everyone here. No problem either way though—the more people who listen to her work, the better.

    C.... K....

+Colin Killick yeah, me too. I have never heard of this band thing un til now. too bad they are missing the lyrics, I didn't know what it was about the first time I listened to it, then I read somewhere that It was about the marketing company.

  66. A.... J....

I am on the verge of tears every time

  67. M.... M....

For all the people commenting how they are playing this song for their third marching selection, congrats. This is quite obviously a ballad, and ballads are almost always 3 out of 4 in a standard marching show. While you all my enjoy bragging about how you get to play the song, let's not forget who did it better than anyone has ever, and will ever do. The Bluecoats.

    M.... M....

We did this last year in our show, "Spring." It was epic.

    M.... M....

We do 3 parts to our shows
    As do most bands...

    M.... M....

+Mr.Meeseeks That is because you are putting the Intro and Opener pieces together as one piece.... Many marching bands do this but most other marching bands had them as separate movements and sometimes completely different songs... What you do just depends on the vibe your show is going for

    M.... M....

I think it depends on the style of your writer or program in general. MANY schools along the west coast here do four movements. Just one of those things that differs from place to place.

    M.... M....

I mean i won a state championship with this song

  68. C.... D....

Blur Springs Golden Regiment brought me here. Love, your little sister band (Grain Valley Marching Band).

  69. G.... G....

    Beautiful

  70. G.... ....

    Bluecoats got me here

    G.... ....

    BLOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

  71. A.... ....

Anyone here after seeing Blue Springs at Grand Nationals?

  72. S.... H....

bluecoats definitely killed this in 2014...

  73. M.... G....

If you didn't come here to see this video due to something marching band related, please, raise your hands. (I came here because it's the third out of five songs in my marching show, and you know EXACTLY who you are...)

    M.... G....

i heard this in techtopia 2 documentary about the machines and technology that is ever present in our lives.

    M.... G....

    ... damn he got me

    M.... G....

    Blue coats

    M.... G....

    🙋🏻‍♂️ I found this on a non-marching-band-related subreddit

  74. r.... ....

I love how it gets more and more computerized as it goes along, its part of what makes this song so good in my opinion, representing that whole creepy database watching you thing

    r.... ....

raging_raichu I really love how some of the tenutos at the end feel so awkward, like the way musicians do when they first learn to play louder, it feels so forced and un natural. I Love It

  75. O.... ....

Does noone else think this sounds like a certain Imogen Heap song some of us might know?

    O.... ....

+OmriSama I thought it was Imogen Heap when I first heard it. I was surprised when it was Vienna. I now love Vienna more.

    O.... ....

+OmriSama They perhaps use the same synthesizer, but nothing about the two songs is alike. Even the message of the songs is different.

    O.... ....

@Mighty Molly The message might be different but that's not what I'm talking about. The fact that you even know what song I'm talking about without the actual name of the song being mentioned anywhere on this post means you understand the similarities (which other people have also agreed with me on).

    O.... ....

+OmriSama I tend to think of this song as Imogen Heap meets Morten Lauridsen.

    O.... ....

+OmriSama She literally said in a live performance when showing off how the keyboard she uses for this song works, "And this is my Imogen Heap board."

  76. H.... S....

my winterguard show last season. so many memories from this song

  77. d.... s....

My high school band is playing this for the third song of our show!

    d.... s....

Are you from blue springs? I know they play it this year!

    d.... s....

+Nicholas Waldron nah im in tennessee

    d.... s....

+donlea schwartz same, mine is playing for our third production.

    d.... s....

+Nicholas Waldron saw them in finals

    d.... s....

I'm doing it for the second movement XD

  78. t.... ....

my high schoolmarching band is playing this in a show entitled big brother is watching (refrencing 1984 by george orwell)

  79. S.... T....

Literally the most beautiful song I have ever heard in my life, and of coarse the Bluecoats performed it wonderfully in Tilt in 2014. Still salty about them not winning though...they deserved it

  80. M.... ....

This song and the Bluecoats cover kill me <3 so amazing
This song made Tilt my favorite show because of this ballad

    M.... ....

+TwinKilling Me, too!!! All of "Tilt," & def., this song. Loved The Blue Notes singing it, as well as playing/performing it, in Tilt. Chills, & Tears...Should become their Theme/Signature song. imho :)

    M.... ....

+Mr.Meeseeks no highschool will ever compare to DCI or bluecoats. Not even a close comparison

    M.... ....

@Kendall Simpson Yeah... we are usually really good but almost all of our juniors and seniors quit and nearly 50 freshman join that year

    M.... ....

+Mr.Meeseeks you could have all seniors and never be as good as a drum Corp. period. No marching band can even come close to the professional level of a drum Corp

    M.... ....

@Kendall Simpson Al ot of them are part of a drum corp so yes we can get close. Trust Me...

  81. M.... P....

    Go Croooooooooooown!!! #Bloooooooooooo

  82. d.... ....

It can't be a coincidence that there's a company based in Little Rock, AR called Acxiom that gathers information and compiles databases on Americans in order to sell that information to other companies.

    d.... ....

@dymecoar No coincidence. That's what it's about. The artist has another life in the business world, and ran into Acxiom there.

    d.... ....

@dymecoar She actually explains it very well in a live version of this song. She's also a software engineer and wrote this album while studying for an MBA from the Ross School of Business and an MS from the School of Natural Resources and Environment. From memory, she was doing some work for a company with access to Axciom files and a coworker looked her husband up.

  83. O.... H....

this was literally in everyone's dci or wgi show. I literally heard this in someone's winter guard soundtrack at least five times. lol

    O.... H....

Two corps played it, and they both played it extremely well. If we're going to talk about a song everyone played, I heard Simple Gifts like five times at Allentown.

    O.... H....

@Libby Hirshberg who else played it besides bloo

    O.... H....

    +Nick MIlls Oregon Crusaders

    O.... H....

Haha, were playing this in our high school show this season as our opener.

  84. L.... l....

    Voice of angel. Thank you.

  85. C.... L....

Oregan Crusaders!!!!!!!!!!!! Ya'll didnt know they used this song too in 2014

    C.... L....

a lot of people knew that lol.

    C.... L....

Lol but no one posted it so I just wanted to say it.

  86. J.... D....

    #bloo

  87. M.... K....

This song is gorgeous. It is so well-composed, and has such an interesting meaning behind it. I am quickly becoming a fan of Vienna Teng.

    M.... K....

+Megan K. You will adore her. I love everything she's done.

  88. M.... ....

    Adored it in Tilt
Adore it in it's original form

It's an all-around gorgeous piece of music and it gives me chills in every form

  89. T.... ....

Isn't it funny this is a song about a supercomputer thar stores data on everyone for advertising and noone else seems to know it

    T.... ....

    @TheFourohsix it's a hymn ass hat

    T.... ....

@TheFourohsix I think it's SO stupid that all just scream bluecoats without even knowing what the song is about lol. The song is made for a smarter audience and is now degraded to the common, stupid audience.

    T.... ....

@MrRudforce Drum corps' audience is not stupid, in fact. I think most drum corps fans can appreciate how well written the song is more than other listeners. Enjoy the song, it's great, don't be a dick to everyone else that enjoys it as well.

    T.... ....

+MrRudforce I'm pretty sure most of the musicians in these corps are intensely more intelligent than you are. These people put more effort into one thing than you have probably in your life. Have a little respect. Also have a respect for the artist, because these corps thought highly enough of this song to place it in their show because it is so beautiful. So yeah, don't mess with DCI.

    T.... ....

    TheFourohsix
    James Corbett knows, LOL....

  90. P.... I....

    gr8 v1d30 m8 i r8 8/8 pls n0 h8

  91. D.... M....

    What does this song mean?

  92. P.... W....

VIENNA TENG REALLY SOUNDS LIKE BRE-ENNA

  93. S.... ....

I feel bad for Vienna Teng because for the first time ever, people know the drum corps arrangement more than they know the actual arrangement. I afraid theyre gonna be overshadowed by the bluecoats

    S.... ....

The drum corps arrangement s better for what it was. Plus it was was more impressive.this is more for listening.

    S.... ....

@Tracer Hayden This is easily just as good as bluecoats. and it makes it better because its her song she wrote herself, it wasnt just an arrangement

    S.... ....

DCI fixes everything? I didnt know this song was broken...

    S.... ....

@Tracer Hayden Lol, it's better. And that's not a knock to Bluecoats or OC.

    S.... ....

It's a great tune. I listen to the original and the Bluecoats version frequently. Vienna Teng gained a lot of new fans (myself included) from Tilt. How is that bad? I've seen live videos of her talking about both the Bluecoats performance and some choir's and she seemed pleased and honored by the spreading of her music to more people.

  94. o.... ....

I love it when I'm introduced to new music and musicians through Drum Corps. Great way to expand my interest in new artists and new or different genres of music. 35 years later, and I'm still learning new things from the Drum Corps experience.

  95. m.... ....

is this Vienna or Ingrid Michaelson?
