In 1967 our Mexican family moved into a coulde sac in a black neighborhood. In Santa Ana , Ca. We lived at the end of the street. A couple houses down across the street live a black guy named Billy Holiday (Like the singer). He was 16 but he looked like a full on man. Everyone called him “monster” because he was like the hulk just covered in natural born muscles. He lived with his grandmother and was always wearing his hair in little braids like Buckwheat from our gang and dress in farmer blue denim overalls, a white wife beater t-shirt, and white fuzzy women’s slippers. He was always in his garage with the garage door up and open, which he had fixed up like a living room (burgundy shag rug, old wooden tv stereo console, black vinyl couch, coffee table, posters of Malcom X, James Brown and Mohamed Ali.
He was always playing his Motown records and kicking back. I was a hippie type kid and everytime he’d see me he’d call me over ask me if I had any weed if I did we’d smoke one or two while listening to his Motown records. He was always cool to me (i was 14) in 1968 after MLK was killed the neighborhood got all rowdy. One day coming home from school I got jumped by a group of black teenagers and got the shit beat out of me. Afterwards I was walking past Billy’s house and he saw me asked what happened? So I told him I got jumped. He told me to get in his car (his grandmothers white 64 impala he had pimped out) I didn’t want to but he told me get your ass in the car. Then we drove a couple blocks and came across the guys that jumped me. Billy asked me if it was them . I said billy I don’t want make any more trouble. He stopped told me stay the car. Got out and walked over to the guys and started slapping them all upside the heads and cussing them out then he pointed at me and continued cussing them out and slapping them upside the head, no one ran because they were afraid of him, then he came back got in the car and said no one will fuck you again ok, now you got any weed? And smiled, and we smoked one driving back to his place listening to this song on his 4 track tape player. Hope life’s been good to you Billy
