We are all slaves to our prejudices. Motown smartly knew most whites would not be drawn to straight R&B, so she had no chance with them. They also knew most blacks would not really respect her soulfulness if they knew up front she was white. -So they did not put her picture on her first album cover. Most blacks were shocked the day Teena showed up on Soul Train! They knew they felt her soul when they thought she was black. To reject her then would be hypocritical. So we loved her because we knew she was authentic.

Incredible song that only reached #37 on the Hot 100 chart. But go back 2 years and this would have been a top 5 hit. Teena did have a top 5 hit in 1985 but this is a better song than "Lovergirl" IMO.
