Taylor Ray Holbrook - Coal Town Lyrics

Daddy wasn't the first, but he might be the last
In a long line of men, covered in black soot and ash
Ain't much work around here since they've closed down the mines
We're either working in the prisons or we're logging them pines

We're just taking what we're given, scraping out a living
Getting by is all we've ever known
Our whole world stopped turning
When them headlamps quit burning
Now we're picking up the pieces off the ground
In what's left of a coal town

No one had a choice when the jobs up and left
It was a man in a suit, who thought he knew best
But he never saw what it was before or what it's now become
And there ain't no turning back, cause what's done is done

And we're just taking what we're given, scraping out a living
Getting by is all we've ever known
Our whole world stopped turning
When them headlamps quit burning
Now we're picking up the pieces off the ground
In what's left of a coal town
You know what's left of a coal town

We're just taking what we're given, scraping out a living
Getting by is all we've ever known
Our whole world stopped turning
When them headlamps quit burning
Now we're picking up the pieces off the ground
And now we're picking up the pieces off the ground
In what's left of a coal town
In what's left of a coal town

And well daddy wasn't the first, but he might be the last

    H.... F....

Well yeah? Why not? Coal mining is paying for my degree in IT focusing on data analytics, coding in Python, R, VBA, SQL. If you can't adapt, you'll be replaced.

Lyrics are amazing, but the music sounds to pop country for me.

  14. C.... N....

The southern coal fields of West Virginia created me, raised me and have taught me everything I need to know about surviving. This song is so original, so real. I love it. ❤️ Songs like this is how you can tell how genuine an artist is without actually meeting them. And this here is proof that you aren't some big city "country boy", you ARE a real life good ol' boy. Thank you for this song. ❤️ & everything else you continue to do.

  15. j.... ....

Is terrible natural gas is killing coal. Trust no politician.

    P.... M....

These folk ain't exactly part of the intelligentsia. They aren't privileged and they can't up and change their entire livelihoods.

  18. U.... J....

From a coal mining family from yorkshire uk. That fought against thatcher trying to close our mines. Great song

    U.... J....

What was the deal with Thatcher anyway? As a Yankee I don't know much about her

  19. S.... ....

It’s always fascinating when towns around a (coal, gold, ect) mine get stuck without the mine. The town was meant to last only as long as the mine will to give people a place to sleep and there isn’t a reason to visit, but people always refuse to leave.

  20. S.... M....

This vidoe immediately hit home to me. I don’t know anyone in my family that was a coal miner but, there’s likely someone in the family tree that was one. This is dam real country music. Keep it up bud. (P.s. I’m from “L.A.” Kentucky. Or aka lower alvaton.

  21. M.... L....

The mines are closed. There’s nothing left but devastation and drugs. This has really caused a boom for the jails and the prisons.

  22. J.... f....

  23. M.... B....

West by God Virginia here coal hole supporter

  24. J.... P....

Where I'm from we don't really have any coal mines that I know of. Oil fields and farms.

  25. J.... M....

Parts were filmed in the town of Appalachia....neato. Hey Orange-Trump where are all those coal jobs you promised?!??

  26. E.... S....

Where I'm from, we didn't have coal miners, but at one point, my home town and the surrounding towns had several cutlery manufacturers. Our environment suffered greatly and there aren't that many businesses left, but like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, we are making a comeback.

  27. M.... D....

    Beautiful song

  28. B.... P....

You need to do another song with upchurch

  29. R.... ....

Not really sure how I ended up here but as someone who was born and raised in caol town in Germany, I just wanted to let you know that this is a great song and I appreciate your work and the people who carried the economy on their backs for so long. Thank you!

  34. j.... ....

    We NEED COAL!!!

  35. D.... M....

Nuclear power is the way to go, sorry america

    D.... M....

I think most of us Americans agree. It's just our politicians keep arguing for wind and solar even though they're super inefficient. Most people realize coal needs to go, I think it's just that it's a large part of culture and life for some. Also different industry is not in place yet for these coal miners so its had for them to see around it.

    D.... M....

Chance Campbell hmm, i get your point. I’m Norwegian, we also made a fortune in oil and gas for the past 40-50 years. Most of our electricity though is generated by hydro power, as we have a lot of mountains and waterfalls and lakes and dams. But yeah, I get your point about coal being a staple in local communities around your country. I guess it’s even worse for you guys as you’ve extracted coal for such a long time as well.

Speaking about wind power, there is actually a huge windfarm being built in New York, right beside the Freedom Statue woman out in the river by Equinor, the national energy company of Norway. Going to be real interesting, they say it can provide electricity to about 500.000 people. However, I still stand by nuclear/thorium.

  36. B.... H....

There is not much of us miners anymore and not a lot of people know nor care about where we have come from or what we have and still do for this amazing country I’m a proud miner and appreciate every one that has had an impact in this line of work and appreciate all the one that have passed away in this line of work 5 generation mine and proud of it stay safe out then men and woman god bless you and your families

    Thanks for all you do

  37. D.... ....

  47. R.... T....

Amazing work on this song. I just found this after watching granger smiths mucus videos. Got yourself a new fan! Love from New Hampshire

  48. J.... W....

What a nice funeral song for a whole era. Time walks on. Everything and everyone has to evolve and to adapt. Nostalgia seldom gives sound advice. Let's not make the mistakes of generations past all over again.

  49. E.... D....

    Go solar

  50. j.... d....

Time for a new line of work boys.
Leave the rest of that filthy crap in the ground.
Come up into the daylight and start putting up solar panels and windmills.

  51. B.... H....

Great song, just sick and tired of hearing snap tracks.

  54. A.... H....

I guess you were in Virginia when you did that song and I live in West Virginia and I love the song

  55. I.... H....

Can you do a version of this song called Logging Town? The logging industry got hit hard with new regulations, much like coal.

    I.... H....

    Ian Holt agreed

    I.... H....

This song already sounds like a thousand other songs before it. You want him to change the words for logging town? Just rub shit in your ear. Same

  56. N.... B....

His vocals style reminds me of early George Strait or Alan Jackson

  57. r.... h....

Haven't heard much country real country till now

    God bless you coal miners

  59. C.... K....

  61. P.... 2....

    Keep em workin boys

  62. S.... B....

This hits home, our mine collapsed twice killing a lot of the men in my already small town. Ever since the mines closed my town turned into a drug poverty stricken town. We went from being a town that supplied canada with a lot of its coal to rubble.

  63. F.... N....

    Great job bro.

  64. R.... B....

    Great song

  65. S.... G....

Beautiful message. Brave hard working gentlemen, just all the people. Years and years or hard working dreamers. Brick by brick and all the little pieces. Very valuable.

  66. T.... P....

  72. D.... S....

Wow a young "country music" artist...sing it brotha.👍

  73. S.... W....

    Shout out from Hawaii brotha🇺🇸🤙

  74. p.... ....

From Malaysia love your song. This so country music. Real Raw And I about LIFE.

  75. M.... S....

sometimes when a trade is done a trade town is done for, all that is life to move on to the next town

    M.... S....

It shouldn’t be that way with coal. It’s still a very cheap, very plentiful, and relatively clean way to produce electricity. It’s also needed for steel. Miners are victims of an over reaching government and an unjustified environmentalist crusade against coal.

    M.... S....

@Will Bennett mate even coal mines go dry, and coal is not clean or cheap at all, cheap to use, expensive to clean up and maintain and keep up with government regulations, and you just move on to the next trade mate, or new location, thats the life of a tradesmen

  76. G.... A....

My grandfather worse his fingers to the Bone in the mines in KY and WV to provide for 4 kids to keep them outa the mines and pushed them north to the factory's. That man was the hardest working man I've known. He died from black lung in 2010. Couldn't leave the life behind he allways went back to make that extra dollar his whole life. I didn't grow up in a coal town but this song reminds me of that man! Thanks for the memories.. keep on doing what you do! It's guys like you saving what's left of country music

    This song is fucking brilliant!

  80. T.... ....

This song broke my heart 💜 and made me cry 😢 !!! 😔😔😔😢😢😢 I lived in the luxury of Manhattan in New York City Central Park West but when Obama became president , things got really REALLY BAD with increase in murders and rapes and robberies by illegal immigrant criminals !!! So I got the heck out of the USA 🇺🇸 and brought me a farm that already had horses and cows and pigs and chickens and cats and dogs and sheep !!! My animal family continues to grow because now I rescue and adopt abused , abandoned , injured lonely and homeless or hungry animals of all kinds including three feet long iguanas 🦎 !!! I have never heard of coal miners and their dead or dying towns and how hard they really struggled to survive !!! Back in NYC in the summers I would go to the supermarkets and buy bags of coal for picnics in Central Park and I never gave it a second thought as to where and how coal was obtained !!! I was selfish and stupid and this video made me realize that !!! Now I wonder where was all that coal in ALL the supermarkets coming from if coal mines were being shut down throughout America ??? These poor hardworking honest beautiful people who were miners are still poor and according to your video , they still work very hard but with lumber !!! These people are struggling to survive !!! PLEASE , leave me a reply on how I CAN HELP !!! God bless you that you may have a long healthy happy prosperous life !!! Your song is heartbreaking but it is a truthful beautiful song and your voice is wonderful to listen to !!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍👍👍♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️😘😘😘😘😘😍😍😍😍😍🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗😊😊😊😊😊😔😔😔😔😔😊😊😊😊😊

My dad was a union coal miner for 20 years, that's how he raised us, his family. He knows it's time to step away from coal and develop sources of energy that dont hurt the environment. He wants to make sure his grandchildren have a clean planet to raise their kids on.

  82. L.... C....

Ever since the frickin Democrats came into power, working folk have suffered. They ain't never got down and dirty and hurt but yet went back. This is pure BS. Since the new way, working folks have prospered in our poor way, better than we did before. Stand strong, sisters and brothers. We will take back OUR land, with the Mexicans and blacks and Indians and Asians and anyone else who wants to be true, and not succumb to lies. Keep the faith.

    L.... C....

it's other republican states fracking for cheaper, cleaner, and safer gas that killed coal. keep blaming the left though...

  83. M.... C....

Driving up through the mountains of VA & West VA, it was amazing to see all of these little towns built into the sides of mountains. The place looks like heaven, yet so many of the people live in poverty. If you blinked, you’d miss it. It’s such a special part of our country, and yet nobody seems to care. We send billions overseas, while our own culture fades away. I’m from eastern VA (Williamsburg), so I had never seen anything like it.

  84. K.... H....

Thank you to all the coal miners who brought light to America from a dark place.

  85. M.... D....

You can thank them fucken libtards they are destroying this country Donald Trump 2020 time to drain the swamp of corruption

  88. J.... B....

I’ve actually been to lynch Kentucky before, its pretty up there when you take away all the bad that’s up there

  89. M.... B....

    Damn this is depressing!!!

  90. R.... I....

The government should build factorys close to where the mine works can switch over from mineing to getting work in factorys ..

    R.... I....

The cost of transportation in and out of these old mine towns would inflate the cost of products, my family is from and still lives In a ol coal town, and manufacturing has came and gone due to it.

    R.... I....

The government doesn’t build factories in America bud, that would be communism.

    R.... I....

I am from the "Ruhrgebiet" in Germany, our last coal mine closed two years ago. Since the 90's out goverment tries a structure change away from producing industry with much money. It only party works. And many mistakes were done. But there are some succedes. Glück Auf!

    T.... o....

After the last 10 years of wage stagnation in the manufacturing sector I had to just hang my hood up, the juice just no longer became worth the squeeze. Its super depressing giving up something you love.

    T.... o....

@Troph2 i dont understand why no one wears respirators. I just started my ironworkers apprenticeship and not one person ive met uses one. i use one when i feel needed. and it has saved me many days of hacking and digging all the nasty shit out of my airways. but the wage stagnation comment is so true. and fortunately but unfortunately it is why i joined the ironworkers union.

  100. D.... B....

True song might be the last
