Taylor, James - That's Why I'm Here Lyrics

Person to person and man to man, I'm back in touch with my long lost friend.
Listen to reason and understand and think of me from way back when.
He said, me and Melissa, well we fell out of love. We ran out of luck seems like lightning struck.
I've been thinking of leaving but I can't raise a buck,
James, I'm wondering could I borrow your truck?

I said that's why I'm here. Got no other reason,
that's why I'm standing before you, that's why I'm here.

John's gone, found dead, he dies high, he's brown bread. Later said to have drowned in his bed.
After the laughter, the wave of the dread, it hits us like a ton of lead.
It seems "learn not to burn" means to turn on a dime
and walk on if you're walking even if it's an uphill climb.
And try to remember that working's no crime, just don't let 'em take and waste your time.
That's why I'm here.

This is an IOU, I reckon I owe you one now.
Listen Wendy and listen Gloria, this'll be better tomorrow.

Fortune and fame's such a curious game. Perfect strangers can call you by name.
Pay good money to hear fire and rain again and again and again.
Some are like summer coming back every year,
got your baby got your blanket got your bucket of beer.
I break into a grin from ear to ear and suddenly it's perfectly clear.
That's why I'm here.

This is the part about Kitty and Jim, he loved her and she loved him.
Wake 'em up shake 'em up the middle of the night, got to tell me everything's alright.
He said that's why I'm here. That's right.

Its a JT kind of day👍

  3. C.... G....

“This is the part about Kitty and Jim” - nice reference to himself and his then new wife Kathryn in the last verse.

  4. D.... H....

    Awesome song

IS THE JOHN LINE ABOUT BELUSHI?! or just one of his bros....or was Belushi one of his bros?!

  6. S.... S....

"This is the part about Kitty and Bim."

"Kitty" is James then-finance Kathryn Walker and "Bim" is James himself. Those were their pet nicknames for each other then. James would call her Kitty and she would call him Bim.

David Sanborn is credited as playing saxophone on this song, but I don't hear one.

    S.... S....

I think that may refer to the album in general. I was confused as well.

    S.... S....

@Evan Galyen There's that 25 second reprise of That's Why I'm Here at the end of the album (I don't know what for). It has 2 saxophones on it. I'm sure David Sanborn's playing one of them.

  11. S.... D....

I never liked this song as it seems that James is dissing his fans

    S.... D....

He's merely talking about the struggle with fame that artists sometimes have.

    S.... D....

Stephen, what does your therapist think about it?

    S.... D....

respectfully completely disagree... he is merely musing on the idea of why in the world do people still want to hear my music..."Pay good money to hear Fire and Rain again and again and again" He is looking at the fans and asking why do this? Little known fact (maybe some know this) this album was his "return" to music after seriously thinking about retiring in the early 80's. A massive crowd in South America is I believe the reason he decided to keep going... they (a crowd of about I think 250,000) were singing along to every word he sang at a concert there. This was I believe the impetus to also write Only A Dream In Rio. The meaning of That's Why I'm Here is contained in all that...

  12. O.... G....

    your music is timeless

  13. K.... B....

Sounds like Denice Williams in the background.

    K.... B....

    Yup! It is. Well spotted!

    Davidmcfarlaneblues. Saint James!

  16. t.... ....

This whole album defines my early childhood. I only have good memories with this one -my parents had it on cassette. Other people my age (21) probably wouldn't even know this album exists. It's by far one of the very best 80's albums imho.

  17. H.... Y....

    so beautiful song

  18. J.... P....

Regardless of song JT puts a smile 😃 on my face!

  19. A.... M....

First album after his divorce from Carly Simon, featuring Deniece Williams on backing vocals.

    A.... M....

Adam Moreira Dang, you're right. Now that you've mentioned it, that's unmistakably Niecy on background vocals.
As a music-lover from waaaaaay back, it's almost embarrassing to admit I didn't recognize that that was her holding down the background vocals.

    A.... M....

I thought I heard Niecy Williams in the background

  20. P.... C....

    Almost forgot about this one.
