Taylor, James - Soldiers Lyrics

It was just after sunrise and down by the sea,
down on the sand flats where nothing will grow,
come drumming and footsteps like out of a dream
Where the golden green waters come in.
Just nine lucky soldiers had come through the night,
Half of them wounded and barely alive.
Just nine out of twenty was headed for home with eleven sad stories to tell.

I remember quite clearly when I got out of bed,
I said, oh, good morning what a beautiful day.

One of James's most beautiful lyrics in a song. Listening in 2019 in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia

I used to peform this song years ago. I decided to bring it out of the locker again so brought this vid up to remind me of the delivery. I played it one time in Hong Kong when they British army was still there. Some squaddies told me it was a favourite of the troops during the Falkland war.

Love this song so much, I know it by heart and sang it for this Memorial Day for all our fallen soldiers - Thanks so Much James

this song was written and sung after the Vietnam War and prior Desert Storm. I get a feeling of civil war-ism. Great Album, prior to James getting into heroin.

Sang this at night to settle my Baby Boo down at night when she was just a kitty. I don't know why . . . That girl ruled my heart from jump and now I can't stop crying after feeling her last breath in my arms Tuesday morning . . . I miss her so much because 17 years was not enough!

great song! wish it was longer!

Nah, it says everything needed as it is.

It was meant to be a longer ballad, but I guess after Taylor and the guy who actually wrote it couldn't make up their minds what to do with it after such a brilliant couple of stanzas they just left it as is and laid it to vinyl.
