GAYLA PINION ~ "We [Gayla & Syd Barrett] were engaged on October 1,1970, on my 20th birthday. His mother [Winifred Barrett] was all for it and my parents were invited over for a celebration meal. It was just like a normal engagement in some ways. He bought a ring and his mother put an announcement in the local paper. Then there was this mad obsession with finding somewhere to live. When we went to see flats he was always embarrassed and tongue~tied and it was me who ended up doing most of the talking. Then he'd ruin it when our prospective landlords asked him about future plans: 'I want to be a doctor,' he'd say, standing there in his Granny Takes A trip clothes. By now I felt I was his strength. I would very much have liked to settle down and marry but he grew steadily more manic. There we were sitting round the table, surrounded by these terribly normal and respectable middle~class people. We were half way through the first course when Syd suddenly coughed and spluttered, left his soup and went upstairs. When he came down, I looked up and saw that he had chopped off all his hair. And would you believe it, no one batted an eyelid. They just carried on with the meal as if nothing had happened ~ didn't say a word. I thought: 'Are they mad or is it me?"'

While Syd was known for his usage of the psychedelic drug, it's disrespectful to associate his name with the substance's. Whether it was intentional or not, you made a mistake here.
