Sweet - Windy City Lyrics

Listen to you
Listen to me
No one knows the reason
Why they wanna be free
Workin' all night
Workin' all day
Waitin' for my money
And I can't get away
I wanna be rich man
But I'm only poor man
I got to get away

Waitin' for the risin' sun to shine on windy city
You can find a place to hide yourself in windy city

I've got to get away from windy city
Your dad's in the slam
Your mama's a whore
No one understands you
Couldn't help bein' poor
But when I get rich
I'll get my kicks
From givin' it all away
Wanna be free
'Cause livin' ain't easy
Wanna be free
Cause that's how it's gonna be
I gotta be free

Waitin' for the risin' sun to shine on windy city
You can find a place to hide yourself in windy city

Gotta be free
Now I'm a rich man
Gotta be free
Don't wanna be this man
I gotta be free

Waitin' for the risin' sun to shine on windy city
You can find a place to hide yourself in windy city

I've got to get away from windy city
I don't wanna be a poor man
Don't wanna be a rich man
I gotta be free
I wanna be free

    Sweet really rocking out
Proof positive this band could rock as hard and heavy as just about any of the other 1970s heavy rock behemoths. Great sound, great vocals, fantastic riff and great playing.

  21. Jon Carpenter

Is it just me or does the intro sound similar to "Woman from Tokyo" by Deep Purple?

    jcBurton2094

    Similar. Not identical, but similar

    John R

it remind me of Tax Man, Mr Thief by Cheap Trick (at least the opening riff). Then agian, the singer also sounds a lot like Robin Zander.

  22. Russell Bieniek

wow this song is good !!!!!

  23. Mike Tzai

one off the best rip brian

  24. SpikeWray1

hang out with the current group in the San Fernando valley sometimes.a Sweet/treat!

  25. Ralph James

At the beginning of the song sing along with the guitar riff, sing My Woman from Tokyo. Sounds kind of the same. Sweet Rocks!!

    Inside Bilderberg

Yes, similar riff, but I like this song so much more than the DP one, good as it is though.

  26. Doug Nichols

What a band! Top shelf writing, singing and playing - all with that hard rock, kick-ass vibe. Guitar man Andy Scott really shines here - he has inspired many guitar players including me. This tune has so many different moods to it - genius songwriting.

  27. Georges FOTIC

certainly a big influence they had on other bands.. somehow or other , we can say that the "Sweet " created the "glam-metal" genre.. it's my humble opinion.
    kind regards from Paris!

  28. Till Eulenspiegel-Kanal

    Straither than Purple.

  29. Andreas Uhlbrandt

Anyone out there who knew, Sweet wanted to rename this album (Off The Record) Windy City, influenced by Chicago and they many tours in USA......
Ok, if somebody thinks Windy City sounds like Deep Purple´s Woman from Tokyo, that´s fine, but I think Sweet sounds Sweet, more or less....besides all those bands are similar and who cares if the music is good enough, that only matters, nothing else. Enjoy the SWEET!

It would be great if you could up load some footage of ANGEL from the 70s.

  35. Baron Frost

ONE BADASS SONG FROM A SUPER BADASS BAND! SWEET are one of the most underated super talented Bands to come from the 1970's a tremendous influence on so many Bands and really created the sound that would become New Wave of British Heavy Metal in the 80's. TERRIFIC BAND! Thank You for uploading this! - Andy.

Sweet, not The Sweet. Great track though.

    Revenge Rabbit

If you're splitting hairs and talking about from around 1972 or 1973 onward, it's Sweet. Before that, it was The Sweet. If you want to go back even further, it used to be The Sweetshop.

    DUNCAN DISTORTION

@Revenge Rabbit + i'm not parting fringes but now it's sweet (scott) & the sweet(priest) & priest owns the rights to the oiginal sweet name design (desolation boulevard/waters edge) so actually we're all right, funny funny isn't it.

  49. john o brien

great song bit of purple in there they should have toured the uk to promote this they didnt from the mid 70s seem to promote the singles or lps punk was here but who knows if they toured they might have turned it round still great memories of one of the

I didnt the song as it self what Im talking about is the guitarrhytm in the beginlng and the guitar chords. They reminds/ make me think about My Woman From Tokyo. The Sweet change totally after they stop working witb Nicky Chinn, Mike Chapman (songwriters) and Phil Wainman (record producer) and with no succes

  59. john o brien

its the old saying every body begs steals and borrows briliant song .so what if it sounds like woman from tokyo. deep purples black night is taken from an old blue magoos number years before they ever recorded it an old crooner from the early 60s did it first

  60. Barney Davis

...yes the riff is similar to Deep Purple, but thats about it.
truth is Brian and Mick were originally in a band called Wainright's Gentlemen', which broke up and Purple and Sweet were formed...so naturally there are similarities.

  61. Simran Persic

@AIKevorkian thats cuz deep purple stole from them -.-

  62. AIKevorkian

Does anyone notice that this kinda sounds like "My woman from Tokyo" by Deep Purple? It's even in the same key, E minor.

    jcBurton2094

"Woman from Tokyo" is in E, not E minor

  63. H8MONGER

All time fav. just seeing the album cover i can time warp 30 years in a second. Thanks so much for posting this, now for some reason i need to find a copy of the movie "over the edge" .

    Mick Nordström

    Exactly!

  67. gorgaphliaz

Musical elitism is a bore....as many bands are described...they are not the best of what they do...they`re the only ones who do what they do.Yes,I like difficult music and appreciate the complexity of like Yes/Gates of Delerium........but I also like 'Wooly Booly"Elvis tunes and others. Not exactly Berkley school of music grads choice for a challenge...but so what?Do your ears like it or not?

  68. warminator

    great guitar work.

[email protected] Il Dolce (for Sweet) Perfect!! Les Douces, die Süssen,,, how funny!!

  70. Melvin Lambert

  73. Melvin Lambert

Es ist eine Scham, dass Gruppen, die Weg vor ihrer Zeit sind, nicht scheinen den recognision zu bekommen, den sie verdienen.

  74. vinto34

Great album..more rocking than their earlier stuff...i had it on cd but it got stolen.

  77. Melvin Lambert

Ritchie Blackmore sometimes made quest appearances with The Sweet when they played live and I think, not too sure though, he was friends with Andy Scott.

  78. warminator

Windy city, Rough and dirty. It was the lyrics that made my parents hate them plus never understanding why i liked them. At 3:04 Andies guitar sounds a bit like Blackmore.

  79. Uwe Rubert

    THAT`S HORNY MUSIC !!! SWEET-4-ever !!!
I LOVE IT FOR THE REST OF MY LIVE !!!

  80. Melvin Lambert

Ich hoffe, dass Sie noch ihre Musik genießen und Sie jetzt eine CD-Sammlung ihrer Alben aufgebaut haben.

  81. Melvin Lambert

    Without any doubt!!

  82. Melvin Lambert

I was going to put " Discophony " on but I'm not too sure because of some the lyrics. I may if it's requested enough.
