Swans - God Damn The Sun Lyrics
When, when we were young, we had no history
So nothing to lose meant we could choose
Choose what we wanted then
Without any fear or thought of revenge
So I gained an addiction to drink and depression
(They are mine, my only true friends
And I'll keep them with me until the very end)
I'd choose not to remember, but I miss your arrogance
And I need your intelligence and your hate for authority
But now you're gone, I read it today
They found you in Spain, face down in the street
With a bottle in your hand and a wild smile on your face
And a knife in your back
You died in a foreign land and they found my letter
Rolled up in your pocket
Where I said I'd kill myself if she left me again
So now she's gone and you're both in my mind
I've got one thing to say before I am drunk again
Goddamn the sun
Goddamn the sun
Goddamn anyone that says a kind word
Goddamn the sun
Goddamn the sun
Goddamn the light
It shines and this world it shows
Goddamn the sun

Swans God Damn The Sun Comments
Swans is a band that I have to regulate in my playlists, because if I listen to this too much, it could mean trouble mentally.
One of those songs that at some point in your life will be the only thing that feels real.
Best wishes on making it through that point.
Everytime i hear this song, I think of my half sister who i truly love.
what a freak queer

Would fit well on Drainland
This song is always stuck in my head, especially when I walk out of my house & it's 110+ degrees...

Hi Angela...
I love this...
perfectly depressing
Isn't this just a Johnny Cash clone?
Nice bait
Approved!
If y'all like sad music, check out Giles Corey.

ΚΟΜΜΑΤΑΡΑ!!! ΜEΓΑΛE GIRA!!!

depressing and exhilarating at the same time
surely one of the best songs ever written
When we were young we had no history so nothing to loose
I get it
singing is so bad lmao, isn't this a studio album?
I miss my dog! My only true friend!
Having lost both an ex and best friend in the blink of an eye, this song rends me like no other.
I feel you man. My girl left me and I've been drunk ever since.
Crushing lyrics.
If you were close, strap in for a wild ride.
My ex who I dated for 6 years dumped me 3 years ago and I still feel sick and lifeless and gray.
Yeah and don't forget the wind the rain the moon the stars and...and...whateverelseyougot.
maplethorpe. (sp) a remember the controversy. Beautiful Song and Album. <3
BRILLIANT
Any serious Gira fans are highly encouraged to check out Angels of Light, especially "New Mother".
When, when we were young
We had no history

Meant we could choose
Choose what we wanted then
Without any fear
Or thought of revenge
But then you grew old
And I lost my ambition
So I gained an addiction
To drink and depression
(they are mine
My only true friends
And I'll keep them with me
Until the very end)
I'd choose not to remember
But I miss your arrogance

If she left me again
So now she's gone
And you're both in my mind
I've got one thing to say
Before I am drunk again:
God damn the sun
God damn the sun
God damn anyone
That says a kind word
God damn the sun
God damn the sun
God damn the light it shines
And this world it shows
God damn the sun

this song makes me feel if anything numb at the moment rapid cycle bi-polar and ice addiction but there is a warming feeling time for treatment/recovery
.......I have so lived this.........
Seriously surprised I missed this band and song back in my goth days.
oh well, its new to me know.
This makes me feel worse than any other Swans track.
Definitely haven't heard Failure then
Or “No Cure for the Lonely”
"Failure" is depressing but the instrumental parts of it aren't as morose as in this song.
This makes me feel worse than any Leonard Cohen track.
This song is crushing
This song is so *god damn* sad
This always reminds me of, " Person Of Interest ".
Getting bad reviews was actually the artistic completion of this album.
He gave life a bad review
"God damn anyone that says a kind word..."
One of Swans' best. Also, the best lyrics Gira ever did.
i love this bleak-ass song....
When this song "dropped" in the early 90s, I didn't take it seriously. Too bombastic, too lugubrious, and the Swans themselves were perceived by my tastemaking cohort as naff: overly gothic, music for tattooed "transgressive" teens from the heartland... but the title always stuck in my head and for 25 odd years now I've been quoting the chorus in a rumbling deep voice and chuckling to myself in the same spirit, with which I appreciate the oeuvre of Morrisey and the Smiths as a body of purest comedy. But many things have
changed and now I play this song today and it seems both unbearably sad and fraught with redemptive light. Michael Gira's doomstruck basso profundo opens trapdoors into regions of the human spirit where clouds obscure the god-damned SUN and jesus rays illumine a few spots in a dark landscape.... I spent an evening barhopping with Gira on the old Lower East Side during the first Clinton administration He was about 10 years older
than me and I found him intimidating...he'd affected a huge unlit stogie and spent the entire night jabbing this tennisball-cansized smoke in the face of his interlocutors and alternately clenching it in his jaws with an exaggerated and terrifying grin--the rictus of a man who might do anything. He was masterful, domineering, selfevidently a virtuoso of mindf**king, hard to be around. He reminded me in some ways of the late poet Maxwell Bodenheim, another poseur with a lust for the gutter and a relentless will to power, if that spectral and starveling poet had taken up diet and exercise and become all aglow with vigor, both dissipated and robust (Gira had something of the strenuous, heroic aspect of the Richard E Grant character from "Withnail and I" , who when challenged to ingest an enormous and potent psychedelic pill sneers, "Balls, I'll swallow it and run a mile".) Even a poseur and a gothic tryhard can get it right once in a while, and this song is proof. God
Damn the Sun! I raise my glass to Michael Gira, the swans, and that vast ball of flame in the heavens.
The most pretentious thing I've ever read
good narrative your a good writer
Your entire comment was an exercise in trying too hard. Seriously, you must be one of those guys who sits around at coffee shops and dubs himself a 'writer.' Do you have any self awareness at all? How smug are you to perceive yourself so superior to Gira or "goths?" You call him a posuer but you clearly didn't have the balls to tell him so. Do you even know what kind of life he had? Tastemaker? Really? Please, do us all a favor and taste the barrell of a gun. It's an activity you can try with your hipster friends.
I too use a thesaurus
If only the Burning World was full of tracks like this, it would be another 10/10 swans album.
How many mix tapes ended with this one?
good song to end the night at a dance club
Nathan M Jr a whole bunch
@anarchore that's not very nice :(
"And then we grew old, so I lost my ambition, and gained an addiction to drink and depression".
They are my, my only true friends, and I'll keep them with me until the very end.

@St. Clare Same!

Dem feels
More metal than metal
Maestro
Seen it live at least six times(the song), maybe more... it never fails to dazzle. Its so bleak, and dark, and dripping and beneath all.....and yet light hearted, cathartic and able to lift a mood while doing the dishes. Goddamn the Sun....
here is a kind word px
purple
I know these feels.
Always one of my favorites.
" god damn the light it shines and this world it shows.." for me this is the most powerful piece of lyric I have ever read/listen, plus the voice of gira... one of the most soul breaking songs in this album... perfect song to listen in my balcony with a smoke and a glass of whiskey and the bittersweet resignation that humans are emptier beings every second it pass...
why Alex?
No. The Replacements are.
I fucking hate myself.
It's okay man , you are not alone ... I hate yourself too
