Swans - A Piece Of The Sky Lyrics

Through a door in the air
On a crumbling stair
In a clear and rushing vein
In a tunnel full of rain
In a piece of yellow light
On the skin of my eye
Are you there?

In the wind of my lung
In methane and in love
In petroleum plumes
There's a floating slice of moon
In your tooth and your claw
and your unforgiving jaws
Are you there?

In a burning white ship
In the taste of her lips
In the blood of the swans
as the sun fucks the dawn
In the mud of a lake
In the drunk and the dazed
Are you there?

In the now that is not
on a ladder to god
On a mountain stripped bare
With your hand in my hair
Behind the face of the sky
on a disappearing line
Are you there?

In the then that was now
In the now that is not
In our names we forgot
In a thought we just lost
We become what we choose
We are stumbling fools
Who are not there

There's some tangled dirty twine
in some idiot's clouded mind
there's some wires that won't unwind
around the ankles of the blind
There's walls lined with soft lead
and in that room is your bed
Is that really you?

Are you in there?
On the moon?
In the air?
Crushed in my hand?
Thrown in a fire?

Through a door in the air

  2. Omar Alsane

    Amazing

  3. Riccardo Affaticato

This is the song of my life.
It's a struggle. An endless struggles. But in the end..

  4. Goat Bug

Sounds like the angels of light, the second part that is.

  5. Filippo Mazzini

The masterpiece of Swans' entire career in my opinion

  6. Ludvig

    9:37 Always gets me.

    Vinyl Diary666

My favorite part of the trip.

  7. first name last name

When I first heard that scratching part I thought my record player was broken

  8. inxy

I want to learn how to make something as cinematically crisp this is but I can't

  9. Kitty Cat

this reminds me of LSD, the anxiety and the overwhelming feeling, like you are launching into the sky, but then you get into orbit and it becomes so unbelievably beautiful

  10. UntitledKirk

I always play this part 6:55 really loud and just get lost in the chaos.

  11. yanquiuxo

Only two minutes, i thought... Once again i ended up listening to it all

  12. Maulen. IDC Florez

This is the best kind of awful.

  13. DerDrache707071

    Awesome!!

  14. Beltrán

Man, I fucking love this band.

  15. crunchy toast

This song is fear and uncertainty, it is so tranquil.

  16. CAMERA D'ARIA

anyone know what kind of instrument is the one starting at 6.58???

    Slight Difference

Sounds like a bunch of bells

    John S Rome

It's multi tracked Zither, played percussively, with some lap steel guitar mixed in for good measure, maybe! It's mesmerising, isn't it?

    End User

i believe it is actually hammered dulcimer

    John S Rome

@End User I believe you are absolutely right! Zither/Dulcimer - I have always found the difference to be a bit confusing. Best wishes.

  17. Erasmo Massimo Donvito

    "Are you in there?
    On the moon?
    In the air?
    Crushed in my hand?
    Thrown in a fire?"
    great, guys!

  18. sebastián pastén

The most amazing piece of music ever made. I love you too, Mr. Gira. Thank you.

  19. Cristian Ha

I remember the first time I heard it. it was like suddenly falling into heaven

  20. Resaurus

    ARE YOU THERE!?

  21. boughtabride96

Truly one of the best albums this century, in my humble opinion, and I'd put To Be Kind right there with it.

  22. Joaquin Shang

    this and apostate are perfect.

  23. Joaquin Shang

way better album than To be Kind, more compact and pure.

    Vinyl Diary666

It depends on your mood, really ... two masterpieces!

    Abhishek Thakurdesai

Nothing comes closer to Bring The Sun

  24. Joaquin Shang

Beautiful, the best from the album.

  25. tequileros97

Micheal Gira is a master of repetition

  26. naturphilosophie1

    We love you!

  27. AnyBuzzin

Very Dark side of the rainbow.

    karisumataichou

The rainbow has been suffocated by the devouring maw of entropy, leaving behind only black tendrils.

  28. DireForFire

This must be the sound you hear when you get frenzied in Bloodborne.

  29. Puppet Master

So incredible! :) Thank you! Love Swans and M Gira.

  30. jeeshwa123

This is my favorite track on the album. The atmosphere is dense. I think even more than the title track, it earns its right to be so long. It's hard to be this musically interesting for 10 minutes, let alone 20. And yet, each progression of the song gives me goosebumps. This album really demands your attention and patience, but I wouldn't describe it as inaccessible. In fact, this album, and this song in particular, is shockingly human.

  31. John Mueller

Many, many years of SWANS attention here.. from the first experience around 1990, I recognized the importance of this convergence of artists..Filth & Feel good now..and all the rest over the years..agony and extacy..please carry on

  32. BaseballCards

I like how this track is pretty much a combination of Soundtracks and White Light

  33. talitino

    shit's hella dope fam

  34. Z-Rex

holy shit this album on mushrooms yes

  35. AndNoOneDriving

    I LOVE YOU TOO MICHAEL GIRA <3 <3 <3

  36. Eric Cartman

    From 15:00 onwards......

    Goddamn.....

    Eric Cartman

    @Doom predictions
Lift Yr Skinny Fists is one of the finest albums ever in my opinion..I like 'em even more than Swans!
Soundtracks for the blind had a more "fucked up" feel than any GY!BE record.
    SWANS is more raw..

    Harry Smith

If you haven't got into Sunn O))) yet I would give their albums a shot, Swans, Godspeed and Sunn are three sides of the same coin really

    Adam B

Glen Branca's work in the 80's would be a good place to look also.

    Puppet Master

    Agree!! Awwwwww :))

  37. Matthias Bangaard Jensen

    This is incredible

  38. Rafael Trindade

It's like ascending to the Heavens in an ocean of glass and chaos.

    Delhi Delirium

I think we share the same dealer

    Rafael Trindade

And the same appreciation for Swans, I hope.

    Delhi Delirium

absolutely, old and new and not so old etc ...

  39. Azathoth

    Absolutely amazing

  40. Ernesto Castro

now i see why people say swans is post-rock

  41. veselinstrasni

that slow jam around 9:30 minutes. eargasm

    Vinyl Diary666

    beautiful

  42. Joel Sully

15:04 and onward is so tender and beautiful, especially after hearing the massive "The Seer" and the terrifying/bleak "93 Ave. B Blues" earlier on the album. The contrast is spectacular. I just recently bought CD copies of The Seer and To Be Kind and now all other music sounds less interesting in comparison.

    yanquiuxo

"now all other music sounds less interesting in comparison"
most true thing i've read in all year

  43. LexianureJi

This one is as glorious as Helpless Child, yet It is more enigmatic to me...

  44. jonanjello

Reminds me of the There Will Be Blood soundtrack.

    Daniel Plainview

    +jonanjello You called?

  45. Doom predictions

What is the meaning behind this lyrics?

    Baby Goose

+valhalla homebound oh my god you're so stupid, vegans are all self-righteous pieces of shit and meat is yummy as heck

    BaseballCards

it is about searching for god and finding nothing

    Baby Goose

Toivoo sinulle kuolemaa ankeaa Fuck you, leather man

    Alex Monro

    Its about my septic tank

    crunchy toast

Nothing in this song would indicate that the search resulted in empty hands

  46. OutsideTheWall

The end is like the feeling after a thunderstorm.. You can practically hear the dewdrops. It's chillingly beautiful

  47. Vinayak Dan

Best song in the album...everything you could want in a swans song. The end is so mellow, like peace emerging out of chaos.

  48. Unk

14:40 to the end is ohhhh some wonderful music to be heard.

  49. Vehlune

You guys are the only band capable of making me feel a range of emotions that go from fearful for my life and tearful out of joy in a matter of minutes.

    I love you Michael

    Cedrou21

truee haha they are on some next level spiritualy

  50. mario majkic

    this chord progression is crazy...

  51. 78uh

    Beautiful album and song.

  52. wet hole

Thank you, Michael Gira and co.
