Suzanne Vega - Wooden Horse Lyrics
I came out of the darkness
Holding one thing
A small white wooden horse
I'd been holding inside
If you could tell them this
That what was wood became alive
What was wood became alive
In the night the walls disappeared
In the day they returned
"I want to be a rider like my father"
Were the only words I could say
And when I'm dead
That what was wood became alive
What was wood became alive
Alive
And I fell under
A moving piece of sun
Freedom
I came out of the darkness
Holding one thing
I know I have a power
I am afraid I may be killed
But when I'm dead
If you could tell them this
That what was wood became alive
What was wood became alive
Alive

Suzanne Vega Wooden Horse Comments
There are times in my life when the only songs I want to hear are her's.
I recall driving in the dark around the Dingle penninsula many years ago when my first born was a small girl in the child seat in the back as I traversed the narrow deserted roads around the head. The mood in the music merged beautifully with the velvet dark. A nice shared moment in time in a life long gone.
@TomR Cheers. I'm guessing the other word in your vocabulary is "duh" .............
@Alan Graham it reminded me of an episode from my childhood...
This is lower in pitch than usual. but it's still good.
I feel like I ought to be reading about Russia's Time of Troubles (1598-1613) while listening to this!
My favorite Vega joint....hypnotic

celtic aggression.
Song is deep.
so patient and dramatic
Oh Suzana Vega - I like your song - wooden horse, it makes me wonder very very much. I am an interior designer. speaking from Bangladesh, Dhaka (Beside India). I also practice meditation. My name is ishtiaque latif.
This song is about Kaspar Hauser, an unknown teenager who appeared in a German town during the early 1800's. According to his story, he was kept inside a cell during all his life, and the wooden horse was one of the toys he said he had to play with.
Music is a perfect medicine to cure our polluted soul
this song is awesome
A song for the start of an evening of deep thoughts.. (I think lol)
Ah, the haunting simplicity of the summer of '87....
The story this was about turns out to have been a hoax. There are other real stories like this though. This used to freak me out so much when I was 15.
However the man this song was about who claims he was left in a cell with only two wooden horses and a wooden dog to play with -not having had human contact in his life- turned out to be a con man who made it all up as a way to get attention and thereby get housed and fed by people fascinated by his fake story.
Not that that should ever take away from the people who do suffer these kinds of things at the hands of sadists.
+Sebbie Shaw Not a con man. Read about Kaspar Hauser and you will see he could not have faked it….

autos & vehicles?
completely awesome song, one of the best ever - and some clown decided it didn't belong on her best/retrospective album! why am I not in charge of everything?
It's one of my favourites, although, the whole album is great.
wouldn't the clown be her?
My favorite Vega
Delicious & cool!!! Is there anymore songs like that?
Haunting.
There's surrealism, there's suspense, there's mystery, there's an air of masterful storytelling only a poet like Vega can whisper in a song ..
She's dope
Thanks for clarifying! It now seems to make more sense! :D
Thank you again! :)
No, you are wrong, it wasn't the only thing he wanted, it was the only words he could say. Look closer to Suzanne Vega's text. He had been deprived from human contact all his life, untill he was let out of the cave as a 16-year-old. Like a parrot he would recite the only sentence he had learned to say, namely: "I want to be a rider like my father." Five years later he was killed. It's a sad and heartbreaking story that deserves attention and a true interpretation.
When Suzanne says (or sings) ""I want to be a rider like my father," were the only words I could say", she emphasises that Kaspar wanted to be like his father, it also seems that it's the only thing he wanted. That's what I read on the wiki description of Kaspar Hauser.
thank you, anyway :)
It's about Kaspar Hauser, 'The child of Europe', rightful son of King and Queen of Baden. He was stolen as a baby and had to spend his whole childhood alone in a tiny room in the basement and fed with bread and water. You can read more about him online.
Casper Hauser.
I played the 'Solitude Standing' album around 10 times yesterday and I never got bored of it! (^-^)
This version seems a little low-pitched or is it just me? I consider this song a little creepy but what is it about?
And when I'm dead
If you could tell them this
That what was wood became alive
What was wood became alive
Forever a fave.
Great Song
beautiful :)
