Suzanne Vega - Some Journey Lyrics

If I had met you on some journey
Where would we be now
If we had met some eastbound train
Through some black sleeping town

Would you have worn your silken robes
All made of royal blue?
Would I have dressed in smoke and fire
For you to see through?

If we had met in a darkened room
Where people do not stay
But shadows touch and pass right through
And never see the day

Would you have taken me upstairs
And turned the lamplight low?
Would I have shown my secret self
And disappeared like the snow?

Oh, I could have played your little girl
Or I could have played your wife
I could have played your mistress
Running danger down through you life

I could have played your lady fair
All dressed in lace like the foam from the sea
I could have been your woman of the road
As long as you did not come back home to me

But as it is, we live in the city
And everything stays in place
Instead we meet on the open sidewalk
And it's well I know your face

We talk and talk, we tell the truth
There are no shadows here
But when I look into your eyes
I wonder what might have been here

Because if I had met you on some journey
Where would we be now?

Suzanne Vega Some Journey Comments
  1. a.... a....

The magical coincidence that makes things like they are now, you and me now, here! Such a beautiful and precious song that deserves more comments.

This beautiful, romantic and mysterious song helped shape a whole sequence in a children's novel...as a younger man/author, I was thrilled and transported by the gypsy coda in "Baba O'Reilly" by the glorious Who. Suzanne Vega's song of chance meetings helped form a back-story for a tale I was telling...and a central character, named for the son of Nico (she of the Velvet Underground), combined with my own backpacker stories became an award-winning children's novel. The penultimate chapter was written with Suzanne's song playing loudly in the background! A beautiful and fondly remembered experience. If you're curious, google "Where In The World".

  18. s.... b....

    Thanx for files

  19. L.... ....

One of my favourite songs from that 1st album. I really like the sparse playing and production - just really atmospheric and tasteful.

  20. c.... ....

    some journey,indeed.

    c.... ....

i like how you completely captured the same i got from this incredible album.

    c.... ....

if you try the eponymus first album and her 2nd called solitude standing i promise you that you stuck on pure gold.

    c.... ....

    you will be rewarded.

    c.... ....

    told ya!

  21. P.... ....

One of my favourite Suzanne Vega songs from a great album.Hard to believe that it is nearly 30 years since I bought that first album. My least favourite songs on it were 'Straight Lines' and 'Neighbourhood Girls' -good songs by most standards, but the other eight songs were just so good that I never tire of hearing them.

    P.... ....

Straight Lines is the one filler on that album but Neighbourhood Girls is a fine song

    P.... ....

+punkpoetry Man, if only I could have written such a "filler" song. Maybe you should listen to it again.

    P.... ....

Disagree punk! Straight lines is so deep with meaning! I hear a woman so frustrated with life she's slicing her wrists in straight lines to escape. Have some pity for her man.

  22. M.... ....

......be careful doing that when you're out on your bike..........

  23. s.... s....

Love this song! It reminds me of my friend Ruth...miss her so much!!!

  24. D.... M....

What ever happened to good storytelling in music. Suzanne was a master at it. Now it's all nonsense lyrics with a dance beat.

    D.... M....

Have you heard the Civil Wars?

  25. s.... j....

    reminds me of Danny.!!!

  26. b.... s....

I can only listen to this alone, with a glass of wine, because if I was in company I wouldn't be able to shut my eyes and dream!I'm a bloke ,a rocker, but this song just sends me into another place which is both euphoric and melancholic.some nights ,when my wife and kids have gone to bed ,and before the working day begins,I listen to this and accept whatevers coming my way!??

  27. h.... ....

well said, Everytime I listen to this song I feel somehow free. Not the only Suzanne Vega I feel that way about.
But especially this one. Awakes wanderlust ... of the mind!

  28. M.... ....

    If anyone's interested:

The fiddler/violin player is DAROL ANGER - he's a great fiddler mostly known for bluegrass and jazz but he's done all sorts of music since the 80s

The synth player is MARK ISHAM - he's now known for all the really great film and TV scores he's done (Crash, Once Upon a Time, Warrior, many more).

They did a studio session with Suzanne on this tune because her co-producer, Steven Miller, worked with Isham and Anger in the 80s. Pretty cool.

    M.... ....

The Darol Anger violin solo at the end almost makes the song. Just fantastic,

  29. c.... ....

@3and25 'It doesn't just tell a story, it tells where stories come from and where they can take you. And why we need them.'

    Well said!

  30. .... ....

I love being on some journey, and when I close my eyes while listening to this
    I am on a journey....
