Suzanne Vega - Language Lyrics

If language were liquid
It would be rushing in
Instead here we are
In a silence more eloquent
Than any word could ever be

These words are too solid
They don't move fast enough
To catch the blur in the brain
That flies by and is gone
Gone
Gone
Gone

I'd like to meet you
In a timeless, placeless place
Somewhere out of context
And beyond all consequences

Let's go back to the building
(Words are too solid)
On Little West Twelfth
It is not far away
(They don't move fast enough)
And the river is there
And the sun and the spaces
Are all laying low
(To catch the blur in the brain)
And we'll sit in the silence
(That flies by and is)
That comes rushing in and is
Gone (Gone)

I won't use words again
They don't mean what I meant
They don't say what I said
They're just the crust of the meaning
With realms underneath
Never touched
Never stirred
Never even moved through

If language were liquid
It would be rushing in
Instead here we are
In a silence more eloquent
Than any word could ever be

And is gone
Gone
Gone
And is gone

At 2:00, one of the goose-bumpiest moments in music as the bridge kicks in. Thank you for every shiver, Suzanne!

the chords are simple in this song, but the strumming is HARD.

I'm sarcastic at times with my language. This song called Language sung by Susanne Vega helps me to see what I do with my language with my harsh speech. I am very harsh with my sharp words that rush in straight to the hearts of good people. The bad people don't care either way since they don't have any feelings. My harsh words can be felt by good people who have feelings. Eloquent silence is okay now I guess?

    fabulous song !

The instrumental bridge in this song is beautiful! This song makes perfect use of empty space to build tension into the lush and open bridge. Genius song writing. Not much of this type of creativity around anymore.

Such a dark and mysterious song. Words can't express how much I love this song.

Oh, I just want to say that i never imagined to find Shangri-La in the moment I looked for the song. I think this beautiful edition you made has to do with this song in many senses. I really love the film of Capra and the song is one of my favorites of S. Vega. It was an amazing and beautiful surprise. Thank you :)

    "I'd like to meet you

Too fast feelings like "duty" come up when you just want to come to know a person, and too fast you connect the friends and family of the other person. I don't like that, maybe I'm too much a cat...

  18. c.... ....

MAGNIFICENT!  I think this is my favorite song by Suzanne. :)

Her song 'Calypso' is also very very beautiful and recommended.

i forgot about gypsie... i guess thats my next stop in youtube-land!

Indeed! Inspiring visual story – Beyond words!!!

  21. W.... J....

thats understandable......i usually dont try to analyze a musician's choice of words too much because i figure they pick those specific words for a reason, and as such it probably adds to the effect of the song

  22. W.... J....

the words she chooses for her lyrics are more than likely artists license to use the ones SHE feels best suit what she is trying to convey, which means they may not necessarily have to make sense grammatically. so its not necessarily our place to literally translate or even correct what they have written

  23. w.... ....

But "laying" is the accurate transcription of the lyric, and as such falls withing the poetic license of "laying" having the more evocative sound and more in step phonetically with the mood and atmosphere of the song--and Miss Vega probably knew that, and did it intentionally. Though I applaud your linguistic skills! I'd hate to see the result if I, as a native English speaker, tried to translate it into Spanish. (And to think, I took ancient Greek as an elective in high school...)

    - you are so right . gypsy would come a close second but so does calypso and ........

It's hard to nail down "the" masterpiece of that iconic album--it is one continuous work of art subdivided into smaller masterworks--this one might take the title. It certainly chills and transports me like no other song quite does...

language is a liquid and it is even more. language is in everyone´s cell, in music, culture, ...its in every place. this songtext is a kind of truth.
