Suzanne Vega - Harper Lee Lyrics
Virginia Woolf
She leaves me cold
I recognize the genius
But I'm twice as bold
Than Hemingway
Lord knows, compared to Faulker
I say it in a better way
Graham Greene
He loves me
He loves my poetic
Sensibility
Katherine Anne Porter
But in about a year
I'm gonna show her how
Yes I will
Said to Reeves the other day
Proust really is the man
Who comforts me in a way
No other writer can
The timeless quality of the work
The length! Is very long
Believe me Marcel Proust goes on
And on and on and on. 7 volumes
Oh, Harper. Harper
Lee. Lee. Lee
She only wrote that one book
I've written more than three
Darling Tennessee Williams
It's anybody's guess
Why "Streetcar" made millions
And "Wedding" so much less
I will forever be pondering that one
Oh, Harper. Harper
Lee. Lee. Lee
Why do they always compare her to me
To me
Won't even talk about
Eudora Welty
As for F. Scott, my Sad Cafe
Is greater than his Gatsby
I'm just telling you
What someone told me they read
I never look at my reviews
They might give me the big head
Now Truman Capote was hypnotized
Mesmerized. Cause he realized
That I knew that he knew
That he had plagiarized
My cadences!
Imagine his surprise,
You'll see it in his eyes
When I win that Nobel Prize
Thank you. Thank you so very much
Harper. Harper
Lee. Lee. Lee
Why do they always compare her to me
To me
She always seems to be receiving
More than she deserves
Honey, she's poaching on
My literary preserves
Yes from Harper Lee
We have seen and we've heard and
I'd like to kill more than just
That mocking bird
You know, sometimes I really would
So you just wait until next year

-10/0, bad song!
Genius.
Muito bom
Funniest song on the album! (Maybe the ONLY funny one.)
I love the new direction that Vega has been going in!
So weird, I pushed the like button at 2:32 and I hear “oh, thank you, thank you, thank you so much”.
She knows everything... including that you like the song at 2:32...
"How can the dead be truly dead when they still live in the souls of those who are left behind?"—Carson McCullers, The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter
I don't understand why people don't see and hear that this is a song about Carson McCullers' life and her literary world. Beautiful song, by the way. I love the work of Mrs. Vega.
All the idiots that are complaining about the music need to know it is soundtrack for a play.
I have to listen to this shit while I work at my job and it plays continously. How is this even music. All she's doing is talking into a mic with some shitty ass 50's trumpets in the back. Garbage ass artist. Delete your account

this song is the worst! it doesnt matter if it's not about her. she makes it sounds as if she personally is better than everyone else. I also here this song at work and it is the worst part of my day. please stop this
pretentious music it hurts my ears.
i love the lyrics. suzanne writing in the POV of someone else is always a delight to listen to.
. . . Fun song!
she is genious wow
They play this song constantly at my job at regal cinemas
AMC for me, but this is always on
I clean to this song at my theatre hahaha
UGH UEC I CLEAN TO THIS XD and i found out harper lee died this year so i looked it up
Just looked this song up, I work for a small theater in Texas. It was terrible but tolerable.
I have to hear this FUCKING SONG on repeat at my job, and this is the SINGLE most PRETENTIOUS musical stain on history I've ever had the displeasure of coming across.
You do understand that this is Carson McCuller's POV, right? Suzanne's not singing as herself. It's pretty hilarious, honestly.
Um, yes, I understand this...Was this comment for me?
McCullers wrote MORE and, yes, she was a DAMN good writer, so...I dunno what else actually needs to be said. McCullers didn't sing that song up above, you DO understand this, right?
Of course not. It's just for the OP and others who didn't get the memo that Suzanne Vega put McCullers's life to music and is singing from the author's POV. (I'm not yet familiar with McCullers's work, but I am familiar with Vega's, and this is definitely not Vega's actual personality.)
Anyway, sorry for the confusion.
Yes, it's strange, people actually thinkin' that Vega's herself in this song...It's flagrantly obvious...that she's pretendin' to be Carson...
Her voice is so erotic
Alex V. same. when she sings I get a MAJOR BONER. I just wanna cum all over her vocal cords.
Love the song, but it's out of date with the release of Go set a watchman
very Randy Newman
This comment may seem out of context but I don't know if Suzanne knows that Lou Reed would have loved this song!
It's like a more upbeat Songs for Drella track
For me this is just like all the other work that I have enjoyed over the years, she is a story teller first and fits the music around. yes it is a little bit "jazzy" but I am just listening to her voice and the message.
McCullers was from the South so they chose a Jazz sound to the song.
Can't wait for this album! 🙌 Suzanne is a great performer and ever-growing artist. She never disappoints
Very nice!
This is very different from Suzanne's previous work. It has a kind of Jazz type of soundto it, Which is a departure from her folk roots.
It is her theatrical side.
I want your new album now!!!!
Love this!!!
Brilliant! This is simultaneously a totally new style and also very reminiscent of her debut album :)
Love it. Cannot wait for this album. Cannot wait to see her this October!
:D :D :D
I may have to scout about to find this CD. Illiterary humour is not funny.
But this song is.
Hv a blesid dy! Thanks!
Grande !!!
