Suzanne Vega - Edith Wharton's Figurine Lyrics
Edith wharton's lovely figurines
Still speak to me today
From their mantlepiece in time
Where they wrestle and they play
Finances and fears
Her face and what its worth to her
In the passing of the years
See the portrait come to life
See the vanity behind
Cause in the struggle for survival
Love is never blind
Now, olivia lies under anasthesia
In a routine operation
Her own beauty not enough,
Her passions and her prudences
Finances and fears
Her face, what it was worth to her
In the passing of the years
See the portrait come to life
See the vanity behind
Cause in the struggle for survival
Love is never blind
Edith whartons lovely figurines
Still speak to me today
From their mantlepiece in time
Where they wrestle and they play
We lie under anesthesia
Our wit and wonder snuffed
In our routine operations
Our own beauty not enough

Suzanne Vega Edith Wharton's Figurine Comments
One of the most beautiful songs of Suzanne about this society so cruel against women, links the works of Wharton and her friend who died in a room operation.
"this society so cruel against women" - dear oh dear, if there's any truth in your comment it serves only to highlight females' obsession with appearance over character.
Great song and great video . Thank you very much for explanations which allow me to fully understand meaning and context of this song .Thanx again ,you did beautiful job !
Excellent video and explanation of a beautiful song with a sad story and message..
what is song name
I think your comment about Suzanne Vega describes her perfectly! Thank you!
I like Suzanne's way of writing lyrics. She never gives away everything. She gives you clues, pieces of a puzzle that you have to put together. Also she has a wide view of things. She's not one-sided and she never points with a finger. So there's always something very personal to you in a Suzanne Vega song if you are willing to explore that.
Very fascinating.
Hi! You're most welcome. You're also most interesting (went to your channel page) :-)).
Thanks for your comment! Eileen (aka adamfulgence)
Wow! Thanks for a wonderfully created video for one of my favourite Suzanne Vega's songs! I was privileged to hear her play this song live - just for me :-) when I requested it during a sound check before her concert in LA back in 2007. Definitely a video worth sharing! God bless you!
Thanks Luis! I love the analogy with the soul! :-))

That's quite a comparison! I totally understand your point of view!
Wow! Thanks so much! :-))
I came here for Suzanne's wonderful song, and left a lot wiser. Thank you; this vid was a beauty from start to finish.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Great job with uploading the song and providing detailed explanation of its meaning. Thank you!
It's a very beautful song - the piano solo isn't bad at all either...
One of her best! I only hated the kuroshitsuji's figurines. lol
A very beautiful song
Gros bisous !! xxx<3
As usual this work is the most interesting. I did not know the story. In France we like very much Suzanne Vega. She makes rare and it's a pity. "My name is Luka" will remain the absolute tube. Thank you for this sad story but nicely put in images.
Her voice is Yum - Thank you E - I likey - I love your art and beauty that you share - tis amazing - sometimes beyond my brain that I have to settle back and watch it time and time again ~ too much emotion within minutes - this is not a bad thing trust me.
