Supremes, The - When The Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes Lyrics
He gave me the eye
But I just passed him by
I treated him unkind
But he didn't seem to mind
But not a word did he say
He just stood there kind of bold
While I acted cold
But when the lovelight starts shining through his eyes
Made me realize I should apologize
And when he placed a kiss upon my face
Then I knew, Oh then I knew
That he won my heart
Hoping he hadn't changed his mind
But not a word did he say
So I turned to walk away
But when the lovelight starts shining through his eyes
Made me realize how he felt inside
And when he placed a kiss upon my face
Then I knew, Oh then I knew
That he won my heart
When he asked could he walk my way
I hoped sweet things he'd say
Instead he smiled kind of nice
As he held my hand kind of tight
But when the lovelight starts shining through his eyes
Made me realize how he felt inside
And when he placed a kiss upon my face
Then I knew, Oh then I knew
That he won my heart
But when the lovelight starts shining through his eyes
Made me realize how he felt inside
And when he placed a kiss upon my face

Supremes, The When The Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes Comments
Motown best ever.
Loved this one back in the day and love it now!!!
my Husky , Achilles and I walked Lord & Taylor at White Flint Mall
Unbeatable songs
tuuuuuuuuuuuuune
if anyone wants to know who the guys were on this song, it was the Temps or the Tops and H,D, H
Beyoncé and Rihanna better bow down!
This by far is my favorite supremes tune the sound was off the chart ,and those album covers were the best
these are three very pretty women
got to this release a little late (never heard it back-in-the-day)...this is really tight!...classic Motown sound!
I recently went in for my ear exam, the dr. said there was something in there, sure enough, this song was playing in there, over and over.
Wikipedia : The Supremes were the most successful American group , with 12 #1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 from 1964-1969
This song sounds so old but I love it. Listen to how the drum beats richocet off each other before the second verse.
Mr Beny B i believe playing drums here
Love that Bo Diddley
That Barry sound...no one could touch it.
And who was the sax player? My man came to teach us!
I believe Mike Terry is the one playing the bari sax on this.
This is supreme
Diane may not have been the strongest vocalist in the group but I LOVE her voice.
"I told him be on his way! Not a word did he say!"
Bo Diddley's got a lot to answer for. Brilliance personified.
Flo Flo so beutiful u are missed.
this is a real unique sounding old song
These beautiful and talented ladies came out of the projects. There has always been much talent and brilliance in those poor and struggling neighborhoods. As Tupac so eloquently wrote The Supremes were the "Roses that grew from concrete".....AMAZING!!!
This is the joint right here!!!! Grew up with this right here.

Hearing this long ago at the house on fifth street. Lots of great music flowed.
Under rated but a classic in my eyes
Still true, after all these years.
I heard this song before but forgot I did until I heard the opening bars.
Amazing song, I wish they would play this one more!
Great song greater photos
I have always loved these ladies and their music!
@ 0:31 my most favorite ever pic of the Supremes <3
Divalicicious!
Like a triple chocolate sundae with whipped cream and cherries 🍒.
So much beauty, style, graceful elegance, how these three ladies happen to be in the same project at the same time. Unrivaled sounds to this very day. Sheer genius in choreography,, stunning!
Magical.
I don’t care what anyone says but, Diana Ross is the greatest female singer of all time. Too bad to all of you, Diana Ross haters.
The best girl group ever without a doubt.
Second Supremes song I ever heard as a kid. Made me love Motown forever.
1st Song I Heard By Thrm Around '63!
I'll bet "i want Candy" by the Strangeloves (later covered by Bow Wow Wow) got a little inspiration from this record.
Yeah - this tune itself is an unlikely mashup of Motown and Bo Diddley.
Another "Not played often enough on radio" song! I didn't even know about this one until Jerry Blavat played it on his radio show years after its release! The Funk Brothers classed up any Motown song they played on!
Killer tune that rarely gets played by the oldies cliques.
The first hit !! Peaking #23 on Billboard
One week before they were gonna be dropped from the label. It made Berry stand up and take notice.
love this song Diane and Mary was good but Florence had the voice. Rest in peaceF lorence
Florence was not that vocally talented....bitter from an early age with a bad attitude....nothing exciting about that uncontrolled high voice. Berry Gordy should know....he hired her. Berry was simply not a fan of her voice and not because it wasn't commercial.
Remember, Berry G. hired the Contours, David Ruffin, Martha Reeves, Dennis Edwards, Ronald Isley, Marvin Gaye, Gladys Knight, Levi Stubbs, Rick James, Teena Marie etc...Berry was NOT afraid, at all, of embracing 'soul singers', that's patently absurd. Berry, and Smokey Robinson, knew Flo from the beginning and her voice....they didn't think she had the fucking talent: Case closed. So if Smokey and Berry said it, it's a done issue.
Stop fantasizing. Diana Ross should have been the lead singer of The Supremes. Period.
Good Battle of the band song...lol
Good aerobic song jumping jacks...lol
Etta James once said in an interview" Diane was sweet, Flo sounded bold when she sang, Mary was the glamour girl with a sultry voice."
@Damo Trent Mary would disagree with you I bet
@jennifur sun lol 🤫 Mary will not meet her own most authentic success until she freely admits Diana's voice is what MADE 'The Supremes' work...not Flo or anyone else...DIANA.... I'm of the belief Mary's refusal here has blocked her from individuating and truly being free artistically. My opinion...
@Damo Trent Yet they didn't fire Flo until 1967, when her drinking became a problem. That's a long time to let an untalented person hang around and stay on the payroll. I'd say, therefore, that Flo had a degree of talent, and the version I heard said that it had less to do with sounding "commercial" than it had to do with sounding black. Gordy wanted the Supremes to be "cross-over" (i.e., cross over to a white audience) in a big way, and Flo sounded more obviously like a black woman than Diana did. Back in he early to mid 60's, some record companies were so concerned with cross-over that they put anonymous white faces on the album covers of black artists, at least new black artists whose identity wasn't yet known to the public. "Get white people to buy black records" ... that was the name of the game. Diana may well have had a better voice than Flo, but the black/white cross-over situation definitely existed and may have affected the thinking of even the great Berry Gordy.
@lindsey lefrois you're not making sense, Black people loved Diana Ross's voice equal to whites. 'Diana Ross' and The Supremes were AS big in the black community as they were in the white community: that's exactly what 'made' them crossover.
You have a fundamental misunderstanding of what 'commercial' means in show business. It means your product can service both demo groups. The way you tell it, Diana Ross voice only sold to white people. Are you blind to the fact that every little black girl in America wanted to be and sound like Diana Ross? Do you seriously not understand Diana Ross's impact on black people especially females? This is why Beyonce wants to emulate her in 2020 !! Exactly because Diana Ross could appeal to BOTH.
Flo was talented but she was not a Diana Ross 'even in the black community'! Black people chose Diana! Not Flo or Mary. And thats what the 'great' Berry Gordy knew and understood, and that's why he put his money on her, she was drawing more attention from both black and white people! Flo was no 'Diana Ross' vocally. Flo didn't have the vocal stamina, agility or style of a Ms. Ross. It's a complete myth that some think Florence was Effie white...she was not. Listen to the real Flo and listen to Diana. You'll come away thinking the same thing that the audiences determined in 1965, Diana was a better singer.

this was my Friday night getting ready tune love it xxx
Love this song, Diane and Mary were great , but Florence had the voice. You can really hear it. R I P
I would have loved to see Flo go solo and have a distinguished career. I think she could've been like Dionne Warwick
great stuff;the best
No question that it is/one of the Supremes' best
Supremes! Talent personified and BTW some very cute photos of the girls! Saw Diana recently at the Encore in Las Vegas. Packed theater and the love for her was deservedly immense. Even after these years she still has the incredible voice, appearance and elegance of her prime.
awwwwwwwsiome photos and song, subbed, gave thunbs up on screen thx so so much,
rare to see Flo on left
Mary Wilson was so good looking.
The Suprems were jammin on this one.. the drummer is killing it.. my favorite Supreme song ever!
pretty sure that is the late Mr Benny
My favorite Supreme song also. I just don't understand why it doesn't get airplay on oldies soul stations (Sirius). It was I believe their first hit.
Their first Top 40 hit - and one of their best. Great drums, chords, and super background vocals. They had a great run, but in the end Berry Gordy and Ego-Diva Ross sold out the other two and ruined it all.
My mom introduced me to them and I don't regret it.
The song that made Diana a star
for some reason this is one of my fav Supremes tunes. love them Funks playing in the background
the sound quality sucks and the choice of song as well.
***************
Diana and the Supremes the best I love ❤ this.
This is one of their very best. Thank you. Billie
i love that woman...Diana
Rocked to this in Henrietta, NY. Thanx
A great and unlikely pairing of Motown and Bo Diddley.
I hadn't noticed that before. The Bo Diddley Beat on the drums and tambourine during the verses and at the end of the choruses. Great ears, sir!
Interesting observation. 4/2018
B.T.Washington
In '63 i was ten going to B.T.Skool on 24th & Prospect in Kansas city mo.
Detroit- # 1 for rockin' jams
Certainly agree with the general consensus below - one of my very favorites by the Girls. This and Breathtaking Guy. Often I like B-sides or less popular songs from artists. GREAT job by MotownFan1962 for the graphics. Absolutely add a lot to the audio.
jesus i can't get enough of that drumming, is it Benny Benjamin or one of the other funk bros drummers?
+DV “Eppish” Epps That's definitely Benny, listen to those pickups.
would have loved to have had those talented fingers
Loved this song...just before "The Supremes" got H U G E.
My fave Supremes tune!
torres songs mine too!! You should see the live one!!
Holland & Dozier wrote some of the finest songs ever! This happens to my favorite one that the Supremes recorded.
+Susie196921 In the 1960's, Holland-Dozier-Holland were as creative as Lennon-McCartney. Really. Seriously.
@lindsey lefrois
Absolutely correct
They were brilliant
this is my jam
That Panasonic radio was the best Christmas Gift I ever received! Thank you daddy...
I was just a kid with a transistor radio attached to my head.. the electric magic of Motown lives forever... I am so fortunate to have been there at the beginning...I loved that radio... I fell asleep listening to all the talent of Motown!
I realize this post is old and you'll probably never see it. I did the same, had my little transistor radio attached to me at all times. Think I was around 7 or 8. I remember hearing this song, in bed, with my radio hidden and head under the covers. It still stands out to me how good this song sounded.
Me, too. The transistor and another small radio at bedside - was grateful to have music at our fingertips!
total class act...
the greatest tune for the Supremes ever...
These guys made a lot of great music, but this was my all time favorite. First big hit I think.
them guys were the Fabulous Funk Brothers
David Monjo baby love?
Where Did Our Love Go was their first hit.
The song was first rejected by the Marvelettes, they also hated the song. Since The Supremes had no hits, they were told they had to record the song and Diana sang lead.
This would begin the Holland Dozier Holland association with The Supremes.
mod era of course !!!!
I luv this song!!!!!!!
cool video, have a look at my channel too.
my definition of psychedelic music is anything that makes me reminisce about sex. this qualifies, especially the intro.
This was the first Supremes song I ever heard, in late '63. Their next record was "Where Did Our Love Go," which really put them on the map. But I agree, this is one of their best!
Thanks for that. I didn't know which one came first
The Supremes did a lot of great, great stuff...but this was their best.
I totally agree !
I agree with torres , by far their best.
GOOD SONG
poor sound!
absolutely the best song the supremes ever recorded... Motown became the sound of Detroit... and I loved every song!
thanks for the reverie!
Check out this amazing Diana Ross remix!
Chilosopher-Someday (Diana Ross Remix)
Reminds me of my ex when we first met it went something like this.
Always loved this song. Just loved the drums. I, too, thought that this was one of the Supremes' best songs.
Thanks for this post. Been many years since I had heard this.
The audio quality is excellent!
There's no "arguably" about it - this is my favourite Motown song, not just favourite Supremes song.
The first song i heard by them.We had this album when it came out.Happy birthday,Diana.
Maybe my favorite Supremes recording, and certainly a song that, to my ears, is more Church and less Motown.
big dance song in Philly
I bet they must have torn the roof off o' the joint!
this is bangin'
@downwiththemaster Play nice, children!
+Jonathan Rush This truly does rock
This is one of my favourite Supremes song.
Famed music historian/writer Dave Marsh put this track on his 1000 greatest songs of all time...
