Supremes, The - We Should Be Closer Together Lyrics

You, you are here and so am I
We must try, we must try, we must try
To recapture days gone by

Something here in this room
All alone with you next to me
The silence is so strong
I'll clear your mind, begging to be free
I no long going through changes
Hopefully for the better
What stop, not progress
We should be closer together, you know that I care

We should be closer together
But if you want to go, I care for you
Just remember what I told you
Should you stay?
Love will find a way

Like are you
You're holding me, but not with your heart
I'll reach out to touch you
I just want to feel you, knowing we're worlds apart
But, baby, if love minus the world
Our dreams will never, never shatter
Find yourself and you'll find me
We'll be closer together

[Interlude]

Ooh baby, we should be closer together
Closer together
Ooh baby, baby, we should be closer, closer
Closer together, yea
Ooh baby, we should be closer
Closer together
Ooh baby, we gotta be closer, closer
Closer together
Ooh baby, baby, baby, we gotta be close
Ooh! Closer together, yeah
Ooh baby, ooh baby, ooh baby, ooh
Closer together, yeah
Closer, closer, we gotta be
I trust in you
Closer together

Supremes, The We Should Be Closer Together Comments
  1. M.... ....

They used to always play this on the Quiet Storm in DC. They loved this song when I was living there.

  2. D.... ....

This is the most gorgeous, sultry Blues song I've probably have ever heard! Mary Wilson and the Supremes were really putting it down!

  3. A.... H....

Mary's voice was perfect for this song. The best Supreme voice for this track.

  4. D.... ....

One of the best songs the Supremes had ever recorded in my opinion!

  5. W.... A....

    What A Masterpiece!!!

  6. S.... W....

This song was specifically written for Scherrie by her best friend Barbara Gaines - widow of Walter Gaines (The Originals). It was the best ballad submitted for the project but Mary ended up recording the song. Scherrie isn't on this recording at all and was very upset when she heard that the session had been recorded without her. I know Scherrie would have made this her own - especially when the song was written for her incredible voice to interpret. If you Google the writers of the song, the names Brian Holland, Janie Bradford and Freddi Gorman appear. That is incorrect. Both Scherrie and Barb Gaines have Barb's original demo cassette of the song SHE wrote.

This song is so moving by these set of Supremes. Mary did a fine job in during the lead on this song. I can imagine the Quite Storm playing these song on the radio.

    T.... D....

DetroitLives313 That what I'm talking about Mary gives thru her time and money. She is a success and although she made not be considered a super star like former Supremes singing partner Diana. She is a star. Her name along with the late Florence Ballard and Diana are in the music history book. I know she celebrate a birthday this month. I wish her good health. Are you in touch with Mary Wilson?

    T.... D....

Mary is beyond being a superstar to me. She is a blessing! She is one of those rare celebrities that has always given back. She has been an inspiration to many people , especially those that know her story. I am. Mary is a friend of mine. I love her.

    T.... D....

DetroitLives313 Do you know if she has any offers to make her books into a move even for TV. What about a play?

    T.... D....

No plans for that. She is working on a coffee table book on the Supremes costumes. A movie would have been great especially before the film "Dreamgirls" came out.

    T.... D....

@Therone Dawson Check her out singing the lead on the Supremes very last record, "You Are the Heart of Me"......magnificent!

  8. m.... T....

Mary sounds the way she acted( sexy) !!!!!

    m.... T....

U do mean silly! Im sure

  9. T.... ....

    Salvation...

  10. V.... ....

Mary's confindence shines here in this song as she sings it with lots of feeling and with Susaye adding that touch with her awesome voice makes this song one of the best! Mary singing that rock stuff and all those other writers who just didn't do her any justice with future recordings needed to work with the Holland Brothers so they can show them how to bring the best out of Mary. I loved this song since the album came out in late 1976 and it still hits me right there.

    V.... ....

@Vincent50 Smokey Robinson and believe it or not Berry Gordy Jr. himself knew how to write and record for Mary Wilson to get great results.

  11. W.... W....

This was beautiful, Mary and Susaye did their thing here.

  12. J.... J....

i wonder if they would make this on an episode of Empire..Cookie still wants her man!

    J.... J....

JSOMERSET994 JSOMERSET994 Can someone send this song to Lee Daniel

  13. R.... R....

Ya right, Scherrie sing with that crackwhore Wilson in the group. Motown was over with anything SUPREME when PARTNERS was released. Too bad too. Maybe if Gordy had showed interest in those two he could have made some memorable tunes. He did have one thing right. He fired Montague Willies (Mary Wilson) in 1980.

I am the ONE and ONLY RR idiot, and playing the "multiple screen name card" is so retarded and 5th grade. Grow the fuck up. Instead of acting like a snotty kid, disprove ANYTHING I write, Mary.

Ahhh, what no errors? This thing is chock-full of them. This song could have probably been the hit they needed at the time, had the Hollands just remembered that back in 1964, when Brian suggested that Miss Moratorium Wilson sing the lead on WDOLG--and he was thankfully outvoted--what could happen if you try out an ACTUAL voice.

Scherrie missed her chance as a post-Diana Ross Supreme when Pedro (Mary's hubby at the time) started calling the shots as their Manager at Motown. Really didn't matter. Motown (thanks to Pedro & Mary Wilson's lawsuit against Motown) had already decided to can them, and NOT promote anything else, lol.... . Great job whore.

    R.... R....

And you look like a bad 1970's reject PIMP!!!

    R.... R....

Finally somebody saw the shit for what it was, SHIT! When did MW get the power to make that ass-beating partner of hers their manager. First thing it did was to fire Cindy Birdsong & replace her w/owl screeching Susaye Greene, who was as bad or worse than Lynda Lawrence. At least Cindy had been there long enough to know all the moves & words, but u learn from ur mistakes. They were so bad that MW had to use her money to get costumes made. If that aint bad, I dont know what is.

  15. g.... ....

Searched for this tune when the melody popped into my head the other day.  Haven't heard it in a very long time right along with "Sweet Dream Machine." My two favorites from this album.  Thanks for posting!

  16. N.... ....

Susaye Greene told me once that this was probably her favorite song her group of Supremes recorded, but added that she wished Scherrie had gotten a chance to sing a few verses.  It's probably my favorite Supreme's song with Mary on lead--it really holds up over time.

    N.... ....

Susaye Greene dont have any group, much less The Supremes. The only song she could sing was "He Aint Heavy, He's My Brother", she ripped the asshole out of that song & gave it a real life, she owned that song lock, stock & barrell, after that, was like an owl screeching, & an animal caught in a bear trap. Sorry Susaye, but it is what it is.

@Ron Rossmore PTL. Praise The Lord!

  17. R.... C....

Hear this track for the first time on the radio (WHUR) and couldn't wait to hear who was the artist. Wasn't I surprise to find out it was Mary Wilson's Supremes! What a beautiful "lost recording"! Just don't understand why I hadn't heard more of it. Thanks for posting!

    R.... C....

@Ronald Clark They play this a lot here in the DC area. I love it too. I was SO shocked to hear it on the radio a year or so ago because I've always loved the seventies Supremes. Very cool.

    R.... C....

Mary Wilson dont have any gotdamn Supremes, by this time, they were just another female singing group. When Jean Terrell left, that was the end of the Supremes. Florence Ballard was gone, Diana Ross was gone, Jean Terrell was gone. What the hell was left? Not a damn thing. Scherrie Payne was an excellent singer, but w/o company support, she was screwed, so The Supremes disapeared & another female group took their place, w/o name or history or really anything else. Even when Cindy Birdsong returned, it was too late in the game to try & salvage their careers. They should have had a decent funeral for The Supremes, because they were dead, professionally, there shouldnt have been a F. L. O. S. group, Former Ladies Of The Supremes, because they dont represent the real Supremes, just another female singing group w/The Supremes' history.

  18. D.... ....

I call this,. "The Supremes Sing the Blues"!   This is one of their greatest recordings in my opinion.  It struck me when I first heard it as a teenager in the 70s and still tugs at me when I hear it hear in 2014  A classic!  Mary and Susaye's duet...........flawless!

    D.... ....

@Calvin375 - Tell your grandma to shut up Calvin! You grammy Mary been hittin' the juice again? Better to stop her now, because after she get drunk, you know she gonna want to shoot the speed.

DetroitLives313 sounds pretty good in 2018 too!

  19. T.... ....

THE SUPREMES smokey sexy ballads always belong to Ms. Mary Wilson!

    T.... ....

I love this song. Mary Wilson sounds terrific with Susaye Greene. Motown must have been crazy to not support them.

    T.... ....

TWTR4EVER always will belong to her, she's hounds simply supreme on the ballads

    T.... ....

    Smoky & sexy my ass!

  21. R.... K....

I loved this Album, great memories. These ladies could sing! OH! Susaye I can hear your high octave voice haunting the melody, Mary Wilson so sultry and in true form. Scherrie Payne the Lady with dynamite voice. Another great album cover, all over my bedroom wall as a young man. Great Album

@Raul Kurt I got this album as a Christmas gift in 1976. Played it often thereafter.

  22. S.... ....

One off my all time favorite" Mary Supremes" tunes & one of the Best Supremes albums, every track is great & powerful in different ways... Great duet with Miss Susaye.. Sexy,Romantic, pure bump 'n'grind, love makin' kind of dancing. Silky, Tasteful Classic... co-written by Janie Bradford.

  23. C.... S....

I always believed that all Mary Wilson needed was the right producer to craft the right songs around her voice. This song shows off Mary's voice PERFECTLY!!! This song is truly a masterpiece and 1 of my favorites. The last 2 Supremes albums were/are the best vocally and production wise. To this day, I'll never understand why Mary Wilson didn't have a successful recording career after The Supremes disbanded in '77. I believe there was definitely more in the tank. SMH

    C.... S....

Berry Gordy spiked her career, he would allow nothing and no one to get in the way of Diana Ross's career

    C.... S....

She had some great solo songs but the industry did not want her to shine. Only if Jean and Cindy would have stayed, but then we lose the Stevie wonder produced songs without Lynda. And we lose scherrie and susaye

  25. s.... ....

    nice one

  26. D.... ....

Top tune! Mary Wilson and Susaye Greene are awesome! The Supremes at their best....indeed!

  27. d.... ....

Is Scherrie even on this track? all i hear is Mary and Susaye.

    d.... ....

If you ignore Susaye's voice you can hear Scherrie, especially at the end when they repeat"closer together". Try listening through a good Bluetooth.

    d.... ....

Sorry to inform you but scherrie isn’t on the track
