Supremes, The - River Deep-Mountain High Lyrics

When I was a little girl, I had a rag doll
Only doll I've ever owned
Well, I love you just the way I loved that rag doll
Only now my love has grown

And it gets stronger in every way
And it gets deeper, let me say
That it gets higher day by day

Oh, do I love you, my, oh, my
Ooh, baby, river deep, mountain high, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
If I lost you, would I cry
Oh, oh, oh, how I love you, baby, baby, baby

When you were a young girl, did you have a puppy
That always followed you around?
Well, I'm gonna be as faithful as that puppy
No, I'll never let you down

'Cause it goes on and on like the river flows
And it gets deeper, baby, heaven knows
And it gets sweeter, baby, as it goes

Do I love you, my, oh, my
River deep, mountain high (I said so high)
If I lost you, would I cry
Oh, how I love you, baby, baby, baby

I love you, baby, like a flower loves spring
And I love you, baby, like a robin loves to sing
Ooh, ooh, and I love you, baby, like a schoolgirl loves her pie, yeah
And I love you, baby, river deep and mountain high

I love you, baby
A mountain so high
A river deep
Ooh, oh, baby, baby
I love you, baby
I bet you do
Ooh, I love you, baby
Tell me you love me
Yes, I do, oh

Do I love you, my, oh, my (Tell me, tell me, tell me, tell me)
River deep, mountain high
Oh, if I lost you, would I cry (Would I cry, baby)
Oh, how I love you, baby, baby, baby

Tell me, do you love me, baby?
I love you, yeah
River so deep, mountain so high
Oh, yeah, baby
Oh-ho, yeah
River deep, mountain high
River so deep, mountain so, so, so, so high
That's how I love you, baby
High, high, high, high, high, high, high, yeah, baby
I love you, baby, yes, yes, yes, I do
Tell me, tell me, tell me one more time

  18. M.... 1....

  19. L.... P....

I was all set to hate this, but I was pleasantly surprised.

  20. T.... c....

Diana was "gettin it" in this song!! Love it!!!

    T.... c....

    This was post-Diana...December 1970.

  21. k.... ....

O.M.G. it has been years since I last listened to this on the radio. If only they had used Spectors Wall of Sound on this recording it would have been a #1 on the charts!

  22. K.... B....

Greatest '70s remake (tied with Grand Funk's "The Locomotion" and Stevie Wonder's "We Can Work It Out") of a '60s standard! Part of the soundtrack of Christmas 1970, my favorite Christmas during my formative years!

  23. T.... ....

THE THREE ALBUMS released in the 1970's featuring THE SUPREMES (Mary Wilson, Cindy Birdsong and Jean Terrell) with THE FOUR TOPS were magnificent and today in 2017 remastered, compiled and re-released as "MAGNIFICENT" will not disappoint. A masterpiece worth saving and enjoyed. They're no artist and music like tat anymore!

    T.... ....

    The MAGNIFICENT SEVEN

  24. S.... S....

    This is music!

  25. S.... S....

Vocalist Jean Terrell kinda sounds like Dionne Warrick.
I wonder if Jean Terrell was related to Tammi Terrell. Hmmnn.

    S.... S....

    by marriage

    S.... S....

Pardon me, I made a mistake on her being related to Tammi Terrell.
Tammi changed her last name from "Montgomery" to "Terrell" per Berry Gordy's request, for entertainment purposes.

    S.... S....

@Shauntrail Skinner Jeanne Terrell was the sister of heavyweight boxer Ernie Terrell, a contending fighter during the late 60s who once fought Muhammad Ali

    S.... S....

@Marc Levitt Not related. Tammi Terrell's birth name is Thomasina Montgomery, changed to Tammy Montgomery, the Tammi Terrell.

Jean was born Velma Jean Terrell. Not related.

  26. S.... V....

A song that will always be remembered sam

  27. K.... B....

That famed "stair step" part is sheer genius which has *never* been equalled.

  28. M.... C....

    Jean Terrell=Fabulous.

  29. t.... ....

    The Magnificent Seven

  30. D.... M....

just love the Motown songs never gets old

  31. A.... F....

Definitely of all versions, this is the best....

  32. K.... A....

The Supremes and the Four Tops said it all with pure soul from the Motor city of Detroit.Jean, Levi, Larry, Cindy, Mary, Duke and Obe brought the Motown classics of the Supremes and the Four Tops upliftingly so.The Supremes with Diana, Flo and Mary, I enjoy their You Keep me Hanging on and with Jean, Mary and Cindy, na, na, na, hey, hey, hey say goodbye. The Four Tops, it has to be Bernadette.

  33. B.... M....

This song is very good! Many artist recorded this song but, this is the only version that made it on the AT 40. It peaked at no. 14 in late December 1970.

    B.... M....

It didn’t peak until Feb 1971

  34. M.... C....

Fabulous Jean Terrell and the Supremes and The Four Top.
Motown Sound number one in the World.

  35. h.... ....

Jean Terrell and Levi Stubbs.....a vocal marriage made in Heaven!!!! Mary, Cindy, Duke, Obie and Lawrence provided POWERFUL backing vocals!!! The Tina Turner (Phil Spector) version is the absolute best, but this is the best cover of the song (A MILLION TIMES better than the Ike and Tina Turner version).

    h.... ....

Tina's version to me was the cover. This is the original.

  36. a.... m....

Este tema es parte de mi juventud...exitos de 1967..programa "Modart en la noche" animador Pedro Anibal Mansilla (peruano) radio Libertad Bs. As. Argentina...recuerdos e historias de amor, que jamas se volveran a repertir...gracias vida, por haber vivido todo esto...!!!!

    a.... m....

estoy sinceramente agradecido A ESTE TREMENDO EXITO. Thanks Very Thanks.

  38. T.... D....

It has been a many of years since I heard their version of this song and still sound good in 2016. Makes me want to dance. Thanks for the memories

  39. J.... f....

Motown, The best music ever recorded. Berry Gordy jr.... thank you for the music...

  40. A.... B....

Not as good as the Tina version, but its a very different production and stands alone as a great song.

  41. C.... B....

Raspy or not, Tina has more emotion in her little finger than this whole group has combined. For something similar try River Boulevard by Lamb, Barbara Mauritz

  42. J.... B....

2016 and still listening-Long Live Motown.

  43. x.... p....

Good version - not a great one! Prefer Tina

    x.... p....

    me two!

  44. D.... K....

    pure magic from Motown.

  45. M.... T....

To me this is by far the best version of this song. Love it.

    M.... T....

    Margaret Tudor BY FAR 💖

    M.... T....

My fave is the non-Spector version TIna Turner recorded in the early 70s. It really captures the energy of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue. Check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJr3v8P5GMQ

  46. b.... a....

    Darleen love best version ever

  47. j.... g....

Super discazo de mi época juvenil cuando en el colegio
nos contagiamos hasta lo máximo con esta canci{on
de nuestras supremas con Diana Ross primera voz
con el acompañamiento de inconfundibles Four Tops.

    j.... g....

    Enserio? De dónde eres?

  48. G.... S....

    The New Supremes

  49. q.... ....

the song was written for Tina Turner and supposedly was projected to become Phil Spectors biggest hit . Just my opinion but the wall of sound did not cut the mustard with this one and Tina turner raspy vocals didnt cut the mustard either Supremes and four tops polished it and made it sound like real hit . Should have gone to number 1 but thats how the cookie crumbles in the music industry

    q.... ....

absolutely. this kicks the Spector original to the curb.

    q.... ....

The song is magnetic, but the Tina Turner version was over the top. Sorry Tina, but screaming is NOT singing. It needed to be toned down and this version is smoother and a lot easier to listen to.

    q.... ....

    quality333 my favorite version..

    q.... ....

Y’all really insulted Tina like that lmao 💀

    q.... ....

Totally agree!! This is the best rendition of this song, by far!

  50. P.... W....

    GREAT version full stop !

  51. L.... C....

One of my favorites; should have charted higher.  Great combining of 2 super groups.  Where are the old days??

    L.... C....

    These are the old days...

  52. S.... R....

It's ok, but gets nowhere near the intensity of the Spector / Tina original, sorry...!

    S.... R....

    i agree

    S.... R....

+SUGARBUSH RECORDS Just ok? Shows how much you know. This is the best version full stop. Tina Turner's voice was all wrong for this song.

    S.... R....

Thanks for that  - I still don't like this version, nothing to do with "know", we like different things that's all.

    S.... R....

    +SUGARBUSH RECORDS Agreed!

    S.... R....

FYI after the Spector version "the wall of sound finally came down" it was not a success

  53. a.... p....

    They hit the quality notes.

  54. a.... p....

    walk away rene

  55. a.... p....

They can hit the money notes and tones.

  56. a.... p....

    When life was a happening.

  57. s.... ....

TWTR4EVER is totally wrong about this record. I don't know why he makes up stuff all the time, but this great record was not a sleeper hit from the summer, nor did it peak in Nov '70. It was released in Nov '70, became an instant hit  and peaked in Jan '71.

  58. J.... W....

awesome song that has been covered so many times. this version for motown with the supremes and the four tops is magic.

  59. H.... M....

The only Supremes song without Diana Ross that is really great. And the truth is it should have been a bigger hit. Only getting to number 14 on the Billboard charts is kind of insulting.

    H.... M....

+Edgar Soberón Torchia Name another good non Diana Ross Supremes song.

    H.... M....

+Harry Mann Jr "Bad Weather", "Stoned Love", "Nathan Jones", "Floy Joy", "Love It Came to Me This Time", "One More Bridge to Cross", "I'm Glad About It", "I Wonder Where We're Going", "Automatically Sunshine", "I'm Gonna Let My Heart Do the Walking", "Up the Ladder to the Roof", "It's Time to Break Down", "Where Do I Go from Here", "Tossin' and Turnin'", "I Guess I'll Miss the Man", "We Should Be Closer Together", "Precious Little Things", "Now the Bitter, Now the Sweet", etcetera.

    H.... M....

Stone Love, Nathan Jones and Up The Ladder were also excellent

    H.... M....

    Edgar Soberón Torchia agreed!

    H.... M....

With Diane it would be better!

  60. T.... ....

THE SUPREMES & THE FOUR TOPS brought "River Deep-Mountain High" in 11/5/1970  to # 14 in The Billboard Pop Charts & # 7 in The Billboard R&B Charts. Started as a sleeper song in the summer of 1970 and it peeked in November!
The two groups together were a powerhouse, there three albums "The Magnificent 7", "The Return Of The Magnificent 7" & "Dynamite" have been compiled in a two CD remastered release by Hip-O-Select call "Magnificent" with extra tracks. This is a music jewel to the ages!

  61. v.... ....

    Great music!!!

  62. C.... ....

I love this 1970 The Supremes & The Four Tops hit, which peaked @ #14 on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart!

Bravo, The Supremes & The Four Tops!

  63. n.... s....

not the clearest sound but the SONG has many layers, instrumentally..that sax is unmistakable!

    n.... s....

The bass guitar with James Jamerson made this tune!

  64. F.... ....

    I see- probably Tina's version I'd say

  65. C.... M....

For years I thought this was the original, then about four years ago I learned it was originally done by Ike and Tina Turner. Never heard the Glee version, but have heard and own Celine Dion's version was uses the same arrangement as Tina's original. Which version does the "Glee" performance follow? This or Tina's?

    C.... M....

    Chris Mulwee Tina's version

  66. t.... ....

we all know that feeling of wanting to go back. and the power of a song to transport us back, if only for a few precious moments...

    t.... ....

Was this Diana Ross and Levi Stubbs singing lead?

    t.... ....

Ms. Ross was no longer with the group in 1971.
This is Jean Terrell and Levi Stubbs sharing the lead

  67. M.... L....

    Brillante!

  68. F.... ....

Love this version, as well as the original and the Glee version

  69. K.... M....

    They were great!!!

  70. J.... T....

    take THAT, Phil Spector.

  71. P.... M....

This proves that The Supremes, did not need Diana, (please don't start yelling at me, as I do like her).

    P.... M....

Even though Berry threatened to wash his hands off the group.

  72. n.... ....

Me too! I was only 13 when this song came out: one of the many songs that I heard on WFIL, Famous 56, here in Philadelphia.

    n.... ....

    "South Philly Rules"

  73. t.... ....

    LOVE THIS!
