Supremes, The - Mother Dear Lyrics

Something's on my mind
Mother dear the boy keeps me crying
Don't know which way to turn
Keeps me so confused
Keeps me so confused

Mother dear
'Cause for him I yearn
But he treats your daughter bad
Keeps your daughter sad

I wish I didn't love him so
'Cause now I can't let him go
His kiss gets a little sweeter
Ooh, my heart gets a little weaker

I'm falling deeper
Deeper in love each day
I know he's no good for me
But I'm too weak to break away

Ooh, each day love gets a little stronger
Ooh, heartaches lasts a little longer

Help, help me mother dear
'Cause I can't help myself
Ooh, he treats your daughter bad
Keeps your daughter sad

So many times I've tried
Telling him we're through
But when he takes me in his arms
There's nothing I can do

Ooh, it's no use
I can't break loose
I keep love him more and more each passing day
All my love to him I give it
Without him around
I couldn't live
I need him so
And he knows it
Can't let him go
And I show it

Help, help me mother dear
I'm so in love with him
But he treats your daughter bad
Keeps your daughter sad

Help, help me mother dear
Help, help me mother dear
He keeps your daughter crying

Supremes, The Mother Dear Comments
  1. R.... R....

Diana Is A Magical and beautiful Black Woman!

  2. H.... O....

Horrible song made especially for a white audience, but the background sounds nice with flo and Mary's skills.

  3. D.... L....

This is a fabulous performance. They look good, but this arrangement is not right. This is really a r&b song. The show tune instrumentation takes the magic away. This would have worked for "Baby Love", " Come See About Me" or even "I Hear A Symphony", but not this.

  4. W.... W....

Flo looks so elegant and confident! She knew she was good, the star!

  5. W.... W....

That's my Flo! You can the other 2, I'll take Flo any day of the week. She is absolutely stunning!

  6. M.... N....

God they were so good live. Great to hear those harmonies upfront rather than lost in the mix.

  7. M.... R....

The stomping soul was taken out and now it sounds like a standard. How unfair.

  8. L.... P....

The one and only Deano Martino...from Stubenville, Ohio.

  9. M.... C....

    Diana Ross !!!

  10. J.... G....

Did anyone see flo talking to Mary?

  11. P.... D....

Absolutely stunning. Love the steady group shot. The Supremes were so sophisticated. Crystal clear vocals. Diana's vocals are most pleasant. I just listened to the Supremes doing a song called "Come On Boy". Incredible harmonies and Diana's phrasing and vocal is similar to champagne in a crystal goblet.

    Ten million American children are
exposed to domestic violence each year. Every nine seconds in the
United States a woman is beaten. If you didn't know this listen to
the new BreakUp Anthem song "Gotta Go" and please
share with someone who needs freedom before it's too late.

  13. S.... L....

Great song, but she's so outsung AGAIN.

  14. M.... ....

Diana body language was very sensual and elegant....very high fashion model

  15. M.... ....

Can't take my eyes off of Diana..she act's the song out

  16. L.... G....

"I'm the star"...standing along...had nothing to say, while being introduced...wow...can only be one star...wow...one n only

  17. J.... A....

This is when the Supremes performed their magic as a group and all three girls could be heard and seen until Gordy ruined it by making Ross the only star of the group.  It can said that Gordy killed the Supremes and then Flo as a last measure.

    J.... A....

And then he carried on screwing over the replacements: Jean left and Cindy ended up in a similar position to Florence after she left: rags to riches and back to rags again and was extremely depressed and lonely for a long time.

Gordy is scum. The boys and gals of Motown deserved better then to be screwed around by that weasel.

  18. T.... ....

Nice that he was gracious to them considering what a dick Dean was.

  19. S.... ....

For a song so full of angst Diana sure seems happy! LOL She sure is fascinating and this performance really shows what a performer she was with the nuances of her engaging you into her charm , subtle eye pops, arm/hand movements, mugging facial expressions and the voice so effective with the raw music of the time. The thing that I find so mystical about Diana is when you look at her entire career you would think you are actually looking at 3 different women but it's all her. During the 60s part of her stardom she was very old world and of that time ..she even looks different from her later 70s/80s/90s persona...like a person that merely resembles the girl of the 60s but not her. And of course now she looks different because of age to her other selves. She is fascinating. And with each era she conveys a different voice, style personality. Compare this performance on Dean Martin's show with the star on stage in Central Park 1983 and you wouldn't think (if you did not know any better) that it was the same woman. Eerie and mystically fascinating.

What I especially like about this video is that Diana finally took Maxine Powell's professional advice to heart and eliminated the eye-popping bit. It makes Diana more sexy if that's even possible. Star quality at its finest!

  21. S.... L....

    BRILLIANT X

  22. E.... Z....

Apparently the cameraman didn't get the memo that Gordy wanted him to focus only on the lead singer. That's why I love this video so much. You can move your eye from one girl to the other and still enjoy the entire group. That's what made The Supremes...supreme!

    E.... Z....

But when you hear the lead singers vocals 80% of the performance your eyes can't help but to focus on her. The background singers could actually be anybody....

    E.... Z....

Thank God for a great cameraman. Berry was rediculious for focusing in only Diana. He's a complete idiot.

    E.... Z....

Right! Because here they were treated as EQUALS (as well they should have always been treated) =)

  23. h.... ....

I just realized the other day that Mary officially disbanded The Supremes 40 years ago in 1977! 40 years ago!!!

  24. d.... ....

Yes....Ms.Ross....wow....that voice is so 'dear' to me.

  25. D.... W....

~ "Mother Dear" should have been released as a single, and Bad Weather should have been promoted when it was released as a single ~ Thank you for posting this early album classic ~ Cheers, DAVEDJ ~

    D.... W....

You're right.  This is a great song.  This live version is great, however, I encourage those who not ever heard the studio version to check it out.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9c6Nq1-CXA

    D.... W....

For some reason, the radio programmers would not play Bad Weather.  The Supremes sang Bad Weather on national television at least three times that I know of so it was promoted. Even Mary stated on an interview she did on Soul Train just after singing  Bad Weather that the DJ's need to play the song.  So even Mary was aware of its lack of airplay upon its initial release.

  26. T.... B....

Always wonderful to hear the harmonies in unison!!

  27. M.... ....

All I see is three young ladies having a blast! Great video. Thank you.

    M.... ....

    +Matthew You're Welcome! :)

  28. D.... G....

THE GIRLS R ON TOP................ALL HAPPY AND DIANA S VOICE EYES ANTICS R PERFECT...........THANKU FOR POSTING THIS ...........NEVER SEEN IT BEFORE ........ITS ON REPEAT

  29. d.... w....

and florence once again stands out physically and vocally. my god she was beautiful.

    d.... w....

Maatization: Those of us who grew up in the 60's have a different view than yours about Florence, and yes, she was thought of as the most attractive and (when she was allowed to) had a mature personality of the 3 back then.

    d.... w....

william ratcliffe I grew up in the 60s and Diana was the stand out star of the group from 1964 on...Flo was an after thought

    d.... w....

Well Florence threw a drink in Berry Gordy's face after he called her fat one time too many, doesn't seem like personality lacking to me

    d.... w....

U KRAZY.. FLOs voice stands out.. all of there outfits are ugly...im sorry.. but they sound well

    d.... w....

divine you and I are on the same page. She owns the stage!

  30. S.... ....
