Supertramp - Hide In Your Shell Lyrics

Hide in your shell
'Cause the world is out to bleed you for a ride
What will you gain making your life a little longer?

Heaven or Hell
Was the journey cold that gave you eyes of steel?
Shelter behind painting your mind and playing joker

Too frightening to listen to a stranger
Too beautiful to put your pride in danger
You're waiting for someone to understand you
But you've got demons in your closet
And you're screaming out to stop it
Saying life's begun to cheat you
Friends are out to beat you
Grab on to what you scramble for

Don't let the tears linger on inside now
'Cause it's sure time you gained control
If I can help you, if I can help you
If I can help you, just let me know

Well, let me show you the nearest signpost
To get your heart back and on the road
If I can help you, if I can help you
If I can help you, just let me know

All through the night
As you lie awake and hold yourself so tight
What do you need, a second-hand movie star to tell you?

I, as a boy
I believed the saying the cure for pain was love
How would it be if you could see the world through my eyes?

Too frightening the fire's becoming colder
Too beautiful to think you're getting older
You're looking for someone to give an answer

What you see is just illusion
You're surrounded by confusion
Saying life's begun to cheat you
Friends are out to beat you
Grab on to what you can scramble for

Don't let the tears linger on inside now
Because it's sure time you gain control
If I can help you, if I can help you
If I can help you, just let me know

Well, let me show you the nearest signpost
To get your heart back and on the road
If I can help you, if I can help you
If I can help you, just let me know

I wanna know, I wanna know
I wanna know
I got to know
I wanna know you
I wanna know you
Well let me know you
I wanna feel you
I wanna touch you
Please let me near you
Let me near you
Can you hear what I'm saying?

Well I'm hoping, I'm dreamin', I'm prayin'
I know what you're thinkin'
See what you're seein'
Never ever let yourself go

Hold yourself down, hold yourself down
Why d'ya hold yourself down?

Why don't you listen, you can trust me
(So what you gonna take?)
There's a place I know the way to
(So what you gonna make?)
A place there is no need to feel
(So what's he gonna?)
To feel
(So what's he gonna?)
That you're all alone
(So what's he gonna do?)

Hear me
(So what you gonna take?)
I know exactly what you're feelin'
(So what you gonna make?)
'Cause all your troubles are within you
(So what's he gonna?)
They're all within you
(So what's he gonna?)
Please begin to see that I'm just bleeding too
(So what's he gonna do?)

Love me, love you
(So what you gonna take?)
Loving is the way to help me, help you
(So what you gonna make?)
Why must we be so cool, oh so cool?
(So what's he gonna?)
Oh, we're such damn fools
(So what's he gonna do?)

So what you gonna take?
So what you gonna make?
So what's he gonna?
So what's he gonna?
So what's he gonna do?

J'adore cette chanson! On en fait plus des comme ça... Dommage mais au moins on savoure cette rareté!

Apart from The Beatles, Supertramp is my favourite group/band of all time and I agree with Red Squirrel they never got the recognition they deserved. But Red Squirrel I don't agree with the 'churned out' bit ;-) I'm so glad I got to see them live at the Birmingham Odeon in the '70s before Roger Hodgson left the band. They went downhill after he left.

Not many comment on the fantastic lyrics here. I don't know about anyone else, but this one is close to the bone for me. Don't most of us hide in our shells? We may make a lot of noise, but I think a lot of people feel very alone in this world (even with friends and family around us). It's almost painful to listen to this song because it hits home so hard. A work of great beauty. I think Hodgson always had an incredible gift when it came to writing and singing songs that go deep inside of us to the places where we hurt or yearn the most. I can't think of anyone who does it better. Thanks again for the upload.

Here in Montreal , they always got the credit they deserved. They made it big here way before they were known across the world. ( aside from Great Britain ) Styx was another group that made it huge in MTL way before they made it big in their own country .

    Thank you Supertramp!

For creating this (second only to "Gone Hollywood"), and for releasing it into our greedy hands!

I was born in the year 1990. My father was/is a big fan of Supertramp. From him i learned how great this music is. I love the variations of instrumentals.

After my father has past the way this music gets more and more meaningful, beautiful and genius.

One of my favorites stays "Rudy"

Just discovered these guys. They remind me so much of Pink Floyd.... Can't believe I haven't hear of them until now. Underrated.

  18. W.... W....

Beautifully crafted and created. Pulling down the lyrics and following them through the journey of the song gives one a sense of the intellectual gift of song writing.....at its finest.

  20. R.... S....

These guys never got the recognition they deserved. For several years in the late 70's and early 80's they churned out some truly stupendous music.
To my mind Supertramp deserve to be spoken of as one of the truly great British bands of all time.

I remember when “Crime of the Century” came out in 1975. It was huge, and got a lot of airplay here in Canada. They weren’t an underrated band at all.

One of the best bands in the world, one of my most favourite songs in the world, but this sounds like a remastered version, difference in the backing vocals and the solo intro part and more pronounced piano overdubs along with stereo imaging, thoughts anybody!!

  41. C.... G....

How to classify Supertramp. Jazz elements, big pop but not song pop ambitions for that era. I will settle for jazz

  42. J.... s....

I grew up to this album, played outside daily, made huge leaf piles to play in with my buddies..........this was a good upbringing i tell ya. when i see youth today i feel sorry that they havent been exposed to such positive life changing moments like playing supertramp during your formative years!

That probably won't happen but Roger Hodgson has been touring. We're going to see him in St, Louis MO 2/24/20 at the River City Casino. He's playing the night before but that show is sold out. Rick Davies had been ill and stopped touring so not sure how he is? yes if they both could tour together....one more time....it would be a beautiful event!!

Supertramp hätte das Album nicht "Crime of the Century"nennen sollen, sondern "The Album of the Century"...und "Hide in Your Shell"ist DAS Meisterwerk des Albums!!!Der Song ist einfach genial, unglaublich und unübertrefflich...nur "The Carpet Crawlers"kommt diesen Song ziemlich nahe...

Back in 1977 Supertramp saved the life of a very troubled 16 year old kid on the verge of taking his life ! There music spoke to him like no other music had ever done before , That's why Supertramp will always have a special place in his 58 year old heart ! And then there's that tattoo of "Supertramp " across my collar bone that will never let me forget !!

    C.... M....

@Craig Markowski Hi Craig I've never listened to Crisis wot Crisis but I think the track Lady is on and I love it gets compared to Dreamer and I can understand why but I think that's why I like it

    C.... M....

@Christopher Hann, I highly recommend giving that CD A listen to , If you are a Supertramp fan you will truly enjoy it !

    C.... M....

There's a song on that album titled another man's woman , Exelent song ! It's one of their songs that sounds like there's a million instruments playing all at once ! It really shows the genius of Roger Hodgson and and Rick Davies !

    C.... M....

Hi Craig yeah I've heard that track it is very good one of my favourite tracks is from Even in the quietest moments is Down stream its just beautiful and never gets the recognition it deserves its a Rick Davies song his piano playing on it is amazing

  90. P.... S....

Just one band, ABBA, had that kind of dramatic sens 'quasi-operistic', that Supertamp had. For me, the highest expression of that mentioned before is this song. After 4:28 the thing becomes so crazy, oberflowing, insistent, insidious, etc, etc... that converts this song in my favorite song of all the music composed in the rock age, that is, the music after 1955. I have 48 years old and I've listened to a lot of music, I appreciate very different styles in popular music, but there is no song, for me, that can be compared to "Hide in your Shell". Thanks, Supertramp. After more than 30 years, this song has get around the saturation curve in most of popular and also some of the most hackneyed pieces of classical music. Before I go to bed I will listeng "Hide in your shell" more than once or twice.

Rick Davies is playing harmonica during the bridge (the part where Roger sings "I want to know..."). It's mixed low, but it's there. On the live version (e.g. Paris, 1979), you can more clearly hear Rick's harmonica.

  96. O.... B....

Dont know why all the good records from Supertramp are removed from Youtube, and all the new versions form Roger alone is kept. I still think the old ones are as good as they get. No versions will be better..

    O.... B....

Maybe you should go old school and buy the album or cd and keep it in your collection

    O.... B....

Streaming a song like this is doing yourself a disservice...comprehension you tube made me put the record on and you can't beat that. Plus...who doesn't own this masterpiece on a physical format? Shame!!
