Sun Kil Moon - Lost Verses Lyrics

I came out from under her warm sheets
Into the brisk late October
If only for one last hope
I wanted my time with you to be over

I'm staring up into the sky
While all the rain is pouring down
I'm reaching out for your help
But evil beings hold me backwards

All shapes and shadows move in and out
And hover around my head
Voices arrive and disappear
I want to talk to them

Darkness disintegrates, I'm rising
I'm rising toward a light
A light leading over hills and meadows

I've risen up from the dead
With the burning leaves of autumn
If only for one last chance
That all of whom have been defeated

To put on my father's wool coat
To smell my mother's fragrances and perfumes
To find my young brothers and sisters
To never leave or let them go

Houses adorned so beautifully
The Marin headlands song
Lost verses well up my eyes and ears
The lone mandolin strums

On Tamalpais warm spring
The many places we
Lay down in sleepy hidden shadows

I see you well and clear
Deep in the moonlight, dear
Your radiant august eyes, they are the suns that rise
They are the light that guides, and these lost verses

I came up from under the ocean
Evaporated sea salt water
A mist above the skyline
I haunt the streets of San Francisco

Watch over loved ones and old friends
I see them through their living room windows
Shaken by fear and worries
I want them to know how I love them so

Foghorns would sound in waking
Is it my voice you hear?
Footsteps are moving across the floor
And you know I'm here

The afternoon carries up from the hills
And you are well and near
To fall into the light I follow

I feel you oh so near when morning doves appear
And ghosts of April ring, echo the refrain
Soon finding a place
In these lost verses

They fill the foggy day, they hide the hills away
That steal our time
They are the picturesque night, the casting city lights
On the bay, flowing into the ocean glowing

  16. a.... ....

My eyes welled up. Love this song.

  17. P.... R....

The whole song is beautiful but that pay off at the end 'Into the ocean glowing' just kills me, it needs the Neil Young n Crazy Horse type jam at the end to alleviate the emotional heft of the rest of the song.

    P.... R....

Spot on with the NY/Crazy Horse jam.

    P.... R....

    so well said

    P.... R....

Agreed; it’s one of the best codas ever written, a driving, emotional respite that yet maintains the spirit of the song. Maybe it’s flying away into things unknown, maybe it’s life pulsing onward. Maybe it’s just a great set of chords. :-)

  18. C.... S....

I know this song is ten minutes long but, it needs to be 2 mins longer.

  19. V.... ....

Sun Kil mono is so underrated. I will share his music

    simply epic!!!

  23. J.... ....

    Can't stop listening to this.

  24. n.... ....

This song completely blows my mind...

  25. R.... A....

    Lost Verses . . .

  26. j.... ....

When I started dating my now wife, I used to travel from North Wales to Manchester on the train every weekend to see her... This album would always be my accompaniment for the journey... Now when I hear it, it always re-invokes that excitement of being in the early throws of an exciting young relationship... It reminds me of being sat in Chester train station, smoking cigarettes and watching people buzz around in their own worlds.

    j.... ....

Thank you for sharing this little story about pure love

    j.... ....

    Thats beautiful man!!!

    j.... ....

    amazing

    j.... ....

    Beautiful

    j.... ....

    This makes me happy.

  27. G.... G....

    such a rad outro

    G.... G....

    +Gabe Garms AGREED!!

    G.... G....

it's got that Cinnamon Girl by Neil Young vibe, no?

  28. D.... D....

this song makes me feel sad but i love it! i dont need to hear anything else!

  29. J.... H....

    greatest. song. of. all. time.

  30. S.... D....

"I see you well and clear
    Deep in the moonlight dear
    Your radiant august eyes
They are the suns that rise
They are the light that guides
    They are these lost verses"

Probably on of the most beautiful pieces of lyric ive ever heard. I love this song with every part of my being. I will never get tired of this.

    S.... D....

He writes some incredible lyrics. The lyrics to Carry Me Ohio are probably my favorite of all time.

    S.... D....

He is an amazing song writer wish I had half his talent honestly

  31. k.... ....

Guitar chord progression reminds me of "That's the Way" by Led Zeppelin

    k.... ....

is true that kozelek was directly influenced by Led Zepellin, listen to the track "the song remains the same" of the album benji

    k.... ....

Thank you. I knew it was something acoustic by Jimmy Page but I couldn't quite say which one. : )

    k.... ....

Same tuning. Same tuning from Joni Mitchell's Both Sides Now (Clouds) that inspired Page to write "Thats the Way" . Progression is the same basically on all three. Good call.

  32. A.... B....

4:07 same fill as the ending in Brown Eyes! Nice.

    A.... B....

There's a fill that's similar in Medicine Bottle, as well. I don't know if it's intentional, but it's cool if it's supposed to be self-referential!

  33. J.... R....

that voice. my god, that voice.

  34. M.... W....

Rocky Mountain High.........Colorado. That's what I'm hearing. But I love it. A little John Denver channeled through Mr. Kozelek.

    M.... W....

Kozelek said that the first three chords of Rocky Mountain High are the basis of alot of his songs. This one included.

    M.... W....

I guess artists are usually influenced and inspired by other artists.

    M.... W....

Nothing any artist has ever made is truly unique.  Art and music both progress by a combination of borrowing from that which came before, and infusing your own ideas into it.

    M.... W....

I concur. The first time I came across Mark Kozelek's amazing voice, it was 2008 and I was going through a tough breakup. I couldn't believe how beautiful it sounded. It just spoke to me. What else can I say.  Western Wails of pain echoing through some southwest desert canyon beneath pale moonlight shadowed under a cactus. Maybe because I'm from Florida this music makes me dream of some beautiful desolate place far away and my imagination just runs and I escape with it.

    M.... W....

every bit jimmy page and john denver and always neil young

  35. S.... M....

Easily the most underrated song ever.

    S.... M....

    It has 370k views....

    S.... M....

    Øyvind Finne only !

  36. P.... ....

My stereo doesn't go loud enough for this song :(

    Time to upgrade.

  37. S.... ....

anyone think the last few minutes sounds like a Modest Mouse song?

    S.... ....

the main acoustic riff reminds me of a slowed down version of his cover for neverending math equation, huh

    S.... ....

    @SimMaster no

    S.... ....

    @Nita Zimmerman
    okay

    S.... ....

+SimMaster he is very influenced by modest mouse

  38. S.... ....

love when that electric guitar comes in

    S.... ....

Ah man it's like... Pure nostalgia.

  39. A.... R....

one of those songs that heal the soul :-)

  40. A.... K....

everytime i listen to this i take a journey and travel to a place exist only in my mind , while holding my beer and sitting on a chair

    A.... K....

You should drink that beer too

  41. G.... D....

Nephew told me to listen oh so glad he did.Simple soft smooth paints a picture that the mind can see an travel to.

  42. j.... ....

It's definitely not silly, we all struggle everyday with our own set of problems. Having beautiful and inspirational music to turn to ease our minds is one of the greatest gifts we could possibly have.

  43. j.... ....

This has to be one of the best balladeer tributes to the afterlife ever written.

  44. S.... U....

    Thank his parents.

  45. J.... S....

    I absolutely love these guys

  46. A.... ....

not a bit cheesy or silly... I agree.

  47. d.... ....

something about his music, especially sunshine in chicago and aleusnd. epic stuff truely soul enchanting

  48. J.... M....

Amazing song. I actually feel bad for those that don't get this song.

  49. R.... D....

His voice is very smooth and soothing. It really an incredible thing, such rare and beautiful music.

  50. M.... W....

    absolutely

  51. l.... ....

There's nothing cheesy or silly about it, it's just wonderful.

  52. D.... E....

That's probably the most beautiful song I've ever heard. I think he loves us.

  53. j.... ....

this song is amazing, it's somber, depressing and uplifting all at the same time.

  54. E.... ....

    perfect music for rainy days

  55. f.... ....

Most played track on Gods iPod.

  56. 9.... ....

I always listen to sun kil moon when life seems pointless

  57. A.... ....

When that ending instrumental comes in it fucking blows my mind everytime.

  58. t.... ....

I like to see that this music attracts thoughtful people.

  59. m.... ....

So sad I am just discovering this music it sounds like a comfortable old friend and I cannot get enough .....I want to know more and hear more and share, share, share

  60. c.... ....

mark kozelek is the sickness of mind. how could someone make such an amazing song like this! it will be always in my ears until the day that i die..

  61. M.... C....

    Good music Good band.

  62. A.... W....

Maybe it's cheesy and silly...but this music makes me feel like everything's going to be okay.

  63. a.... ....

    @Anzaldua3012

    haha it's same to me...

  64. u.... ....

this song and it's sound creates a battleground wherin which i find the truth of the struggle of me. from a fuckin song, i find the me, i am to be? unfuknblvbl homie g. go ohio, moreso than the me i could ever be.

  65. i.... ....

Can't believe I've only JUST brought this album...

Anyone gonna see Mark live in the UK later this month?

  66. C.... R....

@Anzaldua3012 What's important you found him no matter how awesome the Gears of War 3 commercial is, lol.

  67. p.... ....

@Anzaldua3012 me too man. I'm not ashamed. The important thing is you're here now, and have a piece of serenity, if only momentarily.

  68. p.... ....

    @Anzaldua3012
I find it stupid that people think that finding a band from a certain source is a shame, lets say i found it accidentaly, so ? does that make me a more true fan then others ?

  69. M.... ....

    @Anzaldua3012

Guy i think the same thing

  70. M.... ....

@Anzaldua3012 I'm actually proud to say that :P I love this music. It's all good

  71. C.... A....

    tears...

  72. J.... D....

@Anzaldua3012 why would it be man? What is important is that now you know and enjoy this band. Nothing else.

  73. J.... W....

Why does it matter how you got into a piece of music, so long as you discovered it?

  74. A.... E....

    @Anzaldua3012 agree

  75. M.... ....

    @MrCKrool I am

  76. M.... ....

    @Anzaldua3012 so...

  77. D.... G....

2 people really 2 wow cant u jus die omg u ruin this song from being perfect

  78. L.... ....

great song. the ending is epic.

  79. J.... D....

@Anzaldua3012 no its not! If this music makes you feel great its not important how you found it! If you like it, you like it and THIS is what is important, not how you found it.

  80. P.... F....

    @19wayfarer19 That's what she said.

  81. P.... F....

@Anzaldua3012 It's not a shame, the best part about discovering new bands you like is finding bands by accident or in different ways.

  82. M.... ....

@Anzaldua3012 haha u are also here for GoW?? lol :S

  83. p.... ....

    @Anzaldua3012
how ? its just the way you found the band, your love to their songs is as true as everyone elses ;)

  84. S.... R....

    Masterpiece. Nothing else to say.

  85. R.... W....

it makes me feel like i'm back in the 90's again.. in a fall or winter that has a just right temp and sitting with a warm fire and some wine... red to be exact

  86. S.... ....

Wonderful. His voice reminds me Tim Buckley, but the guitars are closer to Red House Painters.

  87. S.... ....

    @kinkycommie -_-

  88. M.... C....

Why is Sun Kil Moon not THAT famous, is beyond the comprehension of my stupid little mind.

  89. A.... G....

Can we stop saying one artists music is better then anothers. All art including music, is subjective. That said, April is the best album of the last decade..In my opinion, of course. :)

  90. N.... ....

    beautiful song....

  91. h.... ....

@EliteSpartan633; joemanYT i agree w/ denomoses lol specimens of idiots are people who lose track of the music... just listen to the message of the song... is it talking about the grave consequences of not adding an E to a word! or correcting someone? WHY WHY WHY!!! listen! just please LISTEN!!!

  92. D.... ....

@EliteSpartan663 Ahh dude he said he liked the song and then you critisised his spelling then called him an idiotic specimen... i think he has the right to call you a jerk and anyway everyone should just chill and enjoy the music.

  93. F.... K....

I like metal and this is amazing.

  94. J.... ....

Somehow it reminds me Chris Issak ... the first time I listen a song from this band and I like it so much.

  95. A.... H....

@EliteSpartan663 soz man , just saying you were the one who insulted me in the first place calling me an english teacher , and then now you call me a jerk ?

  96. b.... ....

    @EliteSpartan663 thanks jerk
