Sufjan Stevens Wallowa Lake Monster Comments
I feel like no other song has ever captured the level of awe I felt for my mother as a child. I loved and feared her in equal measure, and all I wanted was to be with her. Then as I grew I began seeing the alcoholism, and understanding what was happening more and more. It was kind of like watching the end of some great mythical creature playing out on a scale so much larger than my world seemed able to contain.
4:00 onwards is what sailors hear coming from the fog on a stormy sea as they are lured to their deaths by sirens
I was listening to the beautiful voice and heartbreaking lyrics... and then the last three minutes of the track came.
This is my new favorite song.
this song makes me feel nostalgia for things i have not experienced
Sufjan Stevens sounds like fairy music
So whats hinmahtooyah?
The name of Chief Joseph, a historical Native American leader whose band (a smaller subset of a tribe -- the Nez Perce in this case) was forced out of Wallowa Valley. Their land and livestock was stolen by the US government, and they were sent to prisoner-of-war camps in what is now modern day Oklahoma.
@Ryuhza oh damn
So beautyful
so pretty so sad. love me and destroy me.
I get scared listening to this
Anyone know why?
Sister Game Network Opallina It does have a beautiful, yet creepy feel to it!
@Ron P. good to know I'm not the only one
Instagram Katerina Marchenko brought me here
I saw him in a very small room in Wisconsin in the fall of 05 and it was very theatrical and cool.
This song gives me the chills in a good way. It's a freaking masterpiece
I imagine this song is a memory of him and his brother's last time seeing their biological mother. They were brought to the lake town by some guardian figure to have a supervised visit with the mom. But the mom was drugged up or drunk or both and the mother turns into the monster when the visit becomes a train wreck and her leaving them that day is the monster going into the lake. There's enough imagery in the lyrics that make me think this and it's sad. I say this on the first day my girlfriend of a year is right this moment having her first unsupervised visit with her 12 yo daughter at my house while I'm at work. My girlfriend lost custody for a really poor choice to use drugs to escape her problems at the time. Fast forward to today and things are a lot better. But this song hits home of how her daughter might of felt as her and her brother experienced losing their mom to drugs back then.
A very relatable song, which to me is a story of realizing as a child that your parents may have a side that is like a monster, the shift in perception can be sad and difficult
Why god, why????
Sufjan is so underrated why?????
His songs are like poetry. You listen one and next and next and you keep on listening
plug in your earphones and you will find yourself in a different zone...
Overwhelmed!
I'm scared by happy
Also sad very sad
This guy is god level
Daaaaaaaaaaaaamn
Dis be goood
I often don't like Sufjan Stevens as he seems to always hold something back, too controlled, too precise but this song is different this is beautiful.
S Sellers You should try the Age of Adz albim
This song always brings to me vibes of King Ghidorah, i guess is for the fear and the mixed feelings that it makes to me
Who are the kids in the cover?
Sufjan and his brother, Marzuki.
Nice song.
Haunting
the key is so similar to mystery of love
oh this is nice
I would *kill* for Sufjan 👧
Perfection.
Anyone else come here after hearing this excerpt on KCRW?
Stefan what is KCRW
its NPR in LA-- they use parts of songs to end segments and they used the ending today.
Always magical. I hope to someday wright songs like this.
As if you know the story of Wallowa Lake
Leviathan first hid in the deep where her children sleep
She kept them hidden from the plague
But have you heard the story of my mother’s fate?
She left us in Detroit in the rain with a pillowcase
Fortune for the paperweight
We followed her to Joseph, near the Indian raid
She wept among the weeds, hide and seek, for the fallen chief
Spathiphyllum on his grave
And like the cedar waxwing, she was drunk all day
We put her in the sheet, little wreath, candles on the crate
As the monster showed its face
As she waits for her children in the shade
Demogorgon or demigod the ghost parade
No oblation will bring her back to our place
She stayed within the deep end of Wallowa Lake
The undertow refrained with the flame of a feathered snake
Charybdis in its shallow grave
She gave us one last feature, the fullness of her face
In the shade of "Hin-mah-too-yah" (Red Napoleon)
As the demon took her place
As we wait for the waters to reside
Her remarkable stoicism and her pride
When the dragon submerged we knew she had died
I just discover this guy, am I lucky !
the last half of this song sounds like dying
i adore this song
i could cry all day every day over this song
The ending melody sounds EXACTLY like the theme to sisterhood of the traveling pants 2: https://youtu.be/H2pqKI_yqIc I knew it sounded familiar
Every line is a f**kin masterpiece
never thought i'd hear a song with the word "demogorgon" in it. what a gem! i don't understand these lyrics but they are beautiful and poetic.
This is why I live.
For me, this is the most amazing song Sufjan has ever shared with the world in his beautiful career.
I can barely explain what I feel, especially during the last section of the song. It's like I'm smoothly drowning into a peaceful oblivion.
sounds like coldplay from the start
Wallowa lake monsters in all of us...
When the singing starts at 3:52 it reminds me of the voices or vibrations/humming we will hear in Heaven. Even the horns/trumpets. Ahhhhh.... 😍❤❤❤❤
Can't get enough of this masterpiece. I keep listening to it over and over and over. I love every delicious morsel!
So, his new songs are beautiful but is he an LGBT supporter?
He's played for Cyndi Lauper's charity for homeless LGBT youth, and the predatory wasp of the palisades is um. A song that's out there.
Holy shit I didn't expected the gloooooorioouss end I can't even
Brilliant
imagine if this song was at the end of Carrie and Lowell in instead of Blue Bucket of Gold!
sufjan, a fucking legend. should go down as one of the best folk musicians of ever.
OMG,,I HEARD THIS ON COLLEGE RADIO ,,AND KNOW ONE KNEW WHAT IT WAS CALLED ,,SO I COPIED THE PARTIAL LYRICS OF"SHE STAYED WITHIN THE DEEP END OF WALLOWA LAKE:: OMG I FINALLY FOUND THIS
!!,,SORRY ABOUT THE CAPS.
ya'll remember that episode of iCarly when carly got her toe stuck in that bath facet bc that has traumatized me ever since
ARKADA ÇALSIN'DAN GELENLER?
I'm used to sad songs, really. But Soof has the power of making me cry. It's so beautiful and at the same time so sad! I get destroyed with his music, but I can't stop listening to it
This brilliant song proves that Sufjan Stevens is an absolute genius.
Top of the tip this guy.
Beautiful as is most of what I've heard from him.
This is probably my favorite song, I cannot possibly describe how fond I've been of his music since I was twelve, <3 how glad and grateful I am to rediscover his sound over the years <3
the part from about 1:50 is so purely beautiful I can't help closing my eyes whenever I hear it
unbearable. so beautiful.
This song is so mesmerizing
If there was a sound that could make everyone poop at the same time, the end of this song would be it
I came here because of "Call Me By Your Name", and I am addicted to this guys music and soothing voice. This song is unbelievable.
Keep listening and discovering. Sufjan is one of the greatest American artists of our generation. He even composed music for the New York City Ballet's "Everywhere We Go" which was absolutely incredible.
I just heard parts of his "Planetarium" album - wow!
So sad lyrics. I think the "monster" was the squizophrenia that his mother had. Beautiful song. This b-sides disk is really the greatest gift to people who loves "Carrie & Lowell". Thank you Sufjan.
These lyrics are wondrous.
Amazing Sufjan.
I expect all from Sufjan and even so he still amaze me.
congratulations on your academy award nomination 2018
Another triumph for Smurfman Sleeve-ends.
Such a beautiful track!
Is this an outtake? Really? Fuck this dude is unreal!
Best song of 2017 I think!
Agreed 100%
hearing sufjan sing about places in Oregon always imbues his music with a nostalgic feel for me. very special, thank you sufjan.
sufjan is a real storyteller
oh my god, so beautiful
Beautiful!
SO many people listening to Sufjan and crying- he's the country's honorary grief counselor.
I was literally crying to a Sufjan song 10 minutes ago. Your comment is so true : )
*world's
I grew up in Wallowa county. This song makes me feel homesick.
This song is like the final whisper of Carrie and Lowell. Like the last word before it has to be put to bed for good. What more can Sufjan say he certainly poured his heart about it all.
Meditated to this song. Saw a dark lake on an illuminated night sky and white aurora and a girl with white night gown being amazed ♥️
Beautiful with melancholy. What a song!!
Why is this the best song I have heard in such a long time? Love all you do Sufjan! I love how much you sing about my home state
The economy of material on this recent stuff has been really fascinating. This song sounds like a sort of 6/8 “Should Have Known Better”, and “Tonya Harding” sounds like “Blue Bucket Of Gold”, but not to either song’s detriment. It’s like they’re sister songs, but each important in their own way.
thank you spotify for enriching me with this piece of art
I feel so worthless in the face of greatness such as this
Absolute masterpiece, that ending kills me
The ending synths sound like Blade Runner
Curious what you all feel this song is attempting to convey.
I can't believe this was considered not good enough to be in Carrie And Lowell, even though I do love all the songs in it and I couldn't think of any one song I'd choose to be replaced with this. Also everyone shitposting Sufjan's name is really funny to me for a reason I can't quite express.
She left us in Detrooooit
OMG! Sound a like Colapesce!
wow it feels like simon and garfunkel has returned once again
Yooooo
Yooooooooo
yOOOOOOOOOOO
i like this song
He is my favorite artist.
For material considered to be an outtake this is simply staggering... Sufjan Stevens you are a very special talent and I hope I'm around to see hear you making more brilliant songs in the future.
how in the world does anyone 'dislike' this??
