As dark and terrible as it sounds, when depression and anxiety hits me hard I listen to this song, it's soothing to me, like cold water over a burn. It actually has helped me stop the though of killing myself for about two weeks by now. I hope Sufjan knows how terapeutic and precious his music is.

I've found that not many people understand this idea, but listening to a song/watching a movie/partaking in some form of art created by someone who can put your darkest feelings and thoughts into words just helps.
Sometimes when you're sad, overwhelmed, and trying to manage anxiety and depression, knowing that someone else - no matter how distant - knows how you're feeling can make all the difference.

Maidan LEBON This song's about wanting to do just that but not doing so because there are so many wonders in the world to see like the lion caves in the dark.
Sufjan's songs sound sad but it makes us feel not alone in the fight. Knowing someone hasn't ended their lives yet and the songs being proof that they still live and have gone through hardships really help us to stay alive and do what best we can in this unforgiving world.

I genuinely cannot hear 'the only thing that keeps me from cutting my arm'. I have heard 'guarding my arm' forever and only just realised those aren't the lyrics, but still it sounds like he's saying 'guarding' to me. I assumed it was a boxing metaphor (something is stopping me from defending myself properly) but no it's suicide.
