Sufjan Stevens - Springfield, Or Bobby Got A Shadfly Caught In His Hair Lyrics

I don't care to say what
I failed to recognize
Every single day from the poker to the prize
Running out of Springfield
I worked for the Capitol Air, in the bags
Found a woman there who said
she had a mind to make
me a messenger man

If my father took his life
for the national plan, I don't care
I'm not about to stick my grave with an
apron and a bucket of plans, never ever
I can take the pillow cases
off the yellow pillows,
make a property line from the bed
In the living room, the living room,
the morning papers made the most
out of nothing at all

So we took the room
with a view of the runaway
I took off my clothes,
and she took it for a holiday
I was taken for all the things
that I never had before
Running out of Springfield
she left me with a note saying:
"Bobby, don't look back."

And if my wife took a bicycle ride
with a knife in her hand
I saw it coming
All the shad-flies run at once
with a trumpet or a train,
oh I'm running from it

Wait a minute, wait a minute,
Give a minute, lady
I can explain the aftershave
Wait a minute, wait a minute,
give a minute
Bobby got a shad fly
caught in his hair

Sufjan Stevens Springfield, Or Bobby Got A Shadfly Caught In His Hair Comments

If it's wrong to love that guitar solo, then I don't want to be right :)

  2. W.... ....

I made my high school play this for our graduation :D They wanted us to choose songs for the event but I said I didn't listen to any happy music so I felt that I wouldn't be able to contribute but they told me I had to pick a song anyway, so I chose this one haha.

  3. S.... G....

the first sufjan song i heard and dare i say the best

  4. e.... ....

    such lovely codas... sigh

  5. L.... J....

Probably my favourite Sufjan song, and that's saying something. An extraordinary, funny homage to Neil Young, noise guitar solo included.

  6. 2.... F....

Me at 0:01 : "omg I love this, so beautiful"

  7. N.... G....

A lot of people seem to have questions about the "terrible" guitar solo in this song. Sufjan has a history of using elements of noise music and dissonance in his work. I point to the equally "bad" guitar solo at the end of "The Upper Peninsula," the track "Satan's Saxaphones" and almost the entirety of his "Enjoy Your Rabbit" album. This is nothing new with Sufjan, it's just that a lot of people aren't used to it.

  8. A.... I....

    1:25 though

If I ever meet Sufjan Stevens my first and most important question will be, "What exactly is this song about?" As a Springfield, IL native I have an intense connection to this song. I don't quite understand all of the references to Lincoln, but I wonder if that's all it's about. I have my doubts but I HAVE TO KNOW THE TRUTH!

  10. H.... ....

I hate guitar solos, most of them, but this one is great - Sufjan is the master.

  11. d.... ....

    This is great shit!

  12. S.... B....

    What about Superman? lol

  13. T.... ....

One of my favorite songs to cover, amazing lyrics and his voice is absolutely haunting as always. But why the inexplicably horrible solo? It sounds like a drunken troll has ran in the studio halfway through and stolen one of the guitars to add his own input.

  14. D.... R....

The right side of my screen is all Sufjan Stevens and in the middle Elmos world-Birthdays. Why? =)

    D.... R....

Dick Robinson I hear you! That was my feed 2 or 3 years ago when my son was 1-2.

  15. J.... S....

This is just great song, it def should've made it on Illinois

  16. d.... ....

This is one of my FAVORITE Sufjan songs that not alot of people know about!

    d.... ....

It looks like me and you are the only one's. This is def one of my fav's

  17. J.... N....

Ryan Taylor Bliss has got a cover of this one. And it kills this version.
Even though I like that pot-smoked guitar in there.
Interesting how many sounds are used too.

  18. C.... ....

@sedorexox ya a lot of people don't get Sufjan or they can't really get in to it, they think it's too melodramatic, but that's a bunch of crap. It's usually indicative of their already terrible taste in music anyways.

  19. s.... ....

I love this song. The people who I've shown this too all think it's too depressing, but I think it's just relaxing and slow, not depressing at all!

  20. h.... ....

and how does this only have 13,000 views? 12500 are from me

  21. h.... ....

thumb this one if youre from illy, and sufjan is the only great thing to happen to this fuckin state. fuck abraham lincoln!

  22. P.... ....

    genius!

  23. A.... A....

so relaxing. How did this song not make it onto illinois? its better than alot of the songs on that album. I listen to it everyday afterwork on the ride home.
