I love the song, but part of me tenses up to the electronic auto tune shit that was put on sufjan's voice. For me, his voice was meant to be heard in its purest and most raw state. I get why they did it though and it is still an artistic master piece 👌

TheGlader2 most likely referring to the twelfth house in a persons birth chart in terms of astrology. it's the house that's ruled by saturn and capricorn is said to be one of the most difficult placements of it. it's generally the house of self undoing, karma, death, endings, struggle etc. it's the house of your past(in terms of past lives) and with that comes mostly a subconscious level of guilt and unworthiness, anxiety and depression for having perhaps abused your lives in the past. you carry your most prominent fears in this placement. wether or not you believe in that sort of thing i think the symbolism is rather cool!

I wish this production used a proper old school vocoder instead of autotune on the vocals. The overuse of autotune in pop for years has ruined the effect completely making all music making prominent use of it unlistenable.

MammaApa I agree that the autotune here isn't great, but Sufjan has shown quite a few times that autotune can be used well.

The lyrics are really good! There's some classical allusion to the Titan's eating thier children, or Saturn, and then Saturn eating his own children, and then Christian's consuming Christ at the Lord's supper, and then the greatest commandment of Christ as the visual end of the video. Interesting stuff...

Even having read your comment a few days ago, it took me some time to realize how explicitly he's associating Saturn devouring his children with the Eucharist. Saturn, the divine father who gives life and takes it--Christ, the innocent Son who offers his body as the food of eternal life. The rest of the lyrics fit well between these two. Even that reference to Capricorn--ruled by Saturn, a creature of duality, like the divine human. I'm not sure if the song adds up to a specific articulable thought, but it is certainly symbolically and thematically rich.

While Sufjan is remarkably articulate, and I feel certain has well thought out opinions on many things, I agree it is unlikely that he composes many songs that express such things. Rather he is free associating with themes and symbols that are meaningful to him. The countercultural Christianity that is his hallmark is displayed again, as in "Dear Mr. Supercomputer" which I've always wanted him to explain. He's probably wise not to.
