Sufjan Stevens - Come Thou Fount Of Every Blessing Lyrics

Come, Thou Fount of every blessing
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace
Streams of mercy, never ceasing
Call for songs of loudest praise
Teach me some melodious sonnet
Sung by flaming tongues above
Praise the mount, I'm fixed upon it
Mount of Thy unchanging love

Here I raise my Ebenezer
Hither by Thy help I've come
And I hope, by Thy good pleasure
Safely to arrive at home
Jesus sought me when a stranger
Wandering from the fold of God
He, to rescue me from danger
Interposed His precious blood

O to grace how great a debtor
Daily I'm constrained to be
Let that grace now, like a fetter
Bind my wandering heart to Thee
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it
Prone to leave the God I love
Here's my heart, O take and seal it
Seal it for Thy courts above

Come, Thou Fount of every blessing
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace
Streams of mercy, never ceasing
Call for songs of loudest praise
Teach me some melodious sonnet
Sung by flaming tongues above
Praise the mount, I'm fixed upon it
Mount of Thy unchanging love

Sufjan Stevens Come Thou Fount Of Every Blessing Comments
  1. m.... ....

While the pictures are beautiful and interesting I don't think I would have picked this song and thought, "Let me put wild animal shots with it!" But that's just me... it's not a terrible thing... only unexpected.

  2. E.... S....

Peace be with you! The world is abundant! XOXO

  3. W.... ....

Love all the animals ! Never connected this song that way but it is very lovely! Especially the infant animals with their mothers.

  4. m.... ....

I adore this video. It's one of my very favorites. God made a covenant with animals as well as people (see Genesis) and in this video, the animals, by their very lives, seem to be asking for, and depending on, God's eternal love and support--which they, as living beings, deserve. Beautiful photos, beautiful music, beautiful message.

  5. T.... P....

I don't believe in any literal God, but this song brings me to tears. Absolutely gorgeous.

You’ve given the world a great gift with this

  12. P.... H....

I was only religious for a very brief period in my adult life, but when I hear this song, I understand what drew me to it all in the first place. This song, this time of year, well... I can only feel at peace with the world. Whatever our place in the universe, whatever the truth regarding a higher power existing somewhere, is just fine with me in this beautiful little pocket of time.

  14. B.... W....

    FNL. Great version!!!

  15. Y.... W....

Lovely, sriking, heart breaking photographs make this song even more poignant.

  16. J.... G....

I'm not religious at all, but I love this 18th century hymn. Beautiful.

  17. M.... Z....

    Praise the Lord!

  18. d.... W....

did they show this video on national geographic?

  19. W.... ....

I find it absolutely awesome and amazing that the icon shot from this video with its otherwise not very applicable imagery, is a full maned lion standing tall. It's interesting in light of this:

5And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the
tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and
to loose the seven seals thereof.

Jesus is the Lion of Judah, our hope and our redeemer. Jesus has triumphed over sin and death!

    W.... ....

    WhiteCavendish

    W.... ....

WhiteCavendish I don't know if you've seen or read the Chronicles of Narnia, but it's a parable of Christ's story, there Is an all powerful being known as Aslan, he's a representation of righteousness and good, and he's a lion. And he dies for someone who did wrong, this stone table breaks and 3 days pass and he rises again to defeat evil forever. It's pretty dope

  20. C.... C....

Only in religion have we as a species been able to construct an image & experience of the lasting hope that existence denies us.

Would we never had done such a thing: the only thing darker than an absence of hope is the dissolution of a hope once possessed.

    C.... C....

Jesus Christ is not a religion, my friend. He came down to shed His precious blood on the cross to abolish religion! He died and rose again, for us to be counted blameless before the Father in heaven above! He is coming back soon! I hope you know your relationship with Him! Maranatha, God Bless

    C.... C....

    May you find hope again.

    C.... C....

    Nietzsche

    C.... C....

Amen. Man can endure great suffering, as long as he has hope.

    C.... C....

I dare you to say that again, with Muslims in mind. They get their hopes from Islam, hopes of toppling the world and enslaving everyone under Shariah law. How else would any sane human being not see their futility, without religion, without such blind hope?

quien no se levantaba en la misión escuchando esta canción

  22. L.... S....

Where is the last verse?! Sounds so much better with the acapella ending.

    L.... S....

Totally agree, want to use this video for vegans who a religious about saving animals but do not know Jesus. The accapella brings the song home and resolves very nicely. What can we do? It's like it ends abruptly.

    5A  8.7.8.7.  Little Flock Hymn Book 1856 (Revised 1881)

Come, Thou fount of every blessing,
    Tune my heart to sing Thy grace;
    Streams of mercy, never ceasing,
Calls for ceaseless songs of praise.

Jesus sought me when a stranger,
    Wandering from the fold of God;
He, to rescue me from danger,
    Interposed His precious blood.

O to grace how great a debtor
    Daily I'm constrained to be!
Let that grace, Lord, like a fetter,
Bind my wandering heart to Thee.

    Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it;
Prone to leave the God I love:
Yet Thou, Lord, hast deigned to seal it
    With Thy Spirit from above.

Rescued thus from sin and danger,
    Purchased by the Saviour's blood,
May I walk on earth a stranger,
As a son and heir of God.

    B.... 7....

    198    7.7.7.7.
Little Flock Hymn 1856 revised 1881

    'Lord accept our feeble song!
    Power and praise to Thee belong;
We would all Thy Grace record,
    Holy, holy, holy, Lord!

Rich in Glory, Thou didst stoop,
    Thence is all Thy people's hope;
Thou wast poor, that we might be
Rich in Glory, Lord, with Thee.

When we think of love like this,
Joy and shame our hearts possess; Joy, that Thou couldst pity thus; Shame, for such returns from us.

Yet we hope the day to see
    When, from ev'ry hindrance free,
When to Thee, in Glory, brought,
We shall serve Thee as we ought.'

Hearing it in an Olive Garden ad reminds me of what Paul said about the preaching the Gospel It matters less who and where its preached than that it is preached

The spirit of contention is not of God.

  41. C.... L....

    Nice exposition @Suckyskiz.

Being good is a result of Sanctification, ie becoming more like Christ.

Do make sure you place the verse, its Gods Word that does the work buddy.

  42. C.... L....

Hey, see my reply below it may help.

  43. C.... L....

'Oh to Grace how great a Debtor, daily I'm constain to be, let thy grace now like a fetter, bind my wondering heart to thee.'

Your right, this isn't a song about religion. Religion is the Chains this guy is trying to break from.

No this is a song of the Penal Substitution that brought us atonment with God.

'He to Resuce me from Danger, Interposed his precious blood' Talks of Our desperate state where we are in the Firing sights of Gods Wrath, yet It was interposed with Jesus Death/blood.
    C

  44. I.... M....

In a very limited, two-dimensional sense, I see what you're saying. But what Jesus did in his life was to be the physical embodiment of an invisible God. Jesus taught us to respond to God's gifts of love and Grace in a way that allows us to do the forgiving and engage in reconciliation ourselves.

  45. C.... H....

Why do you call Jesus good? There is only one who is good.

Jesus' message wasn't "be a good person." Yes, his teachings were showing us how to be a good person, especially the sermon on the mount, but there was more to it than that. Jesus claimed to be God. He claimed to have authority to forgive sins, which for a human to claim is ludicrous. Think about it - if I forgave someone for causing harm to you, how would that make you feel? Jesus claimed to have authority reserved for God alone.

  46. L.... F....

    <3 LOVE!

  47. J.... J....

Life itself is grace and love...

  48. W.... I....

  54. U.... ....

Probably my fav. song by sufjan stevens. -not a christian

  55. B.... ....

*John 14:6 or Matthew 10:34-35, sorry!

  56. B.... ....

I get what you're saying, but the view that Jesus' message was simply to 'be a good person' is quite reductionist and ignores many other things he said and did. Don't forget Luke 4:16-27, John 14:16, or Matthew 1:34-35.

A better understanding of Jesus is that he came to bring about the promised messianic age and establish God's sovereign Kingship over all creation.

Maybe you should read a bit more on what Christians believe. Or hey - I'm always willing to chat about it!

  57. j.... ....

    Christian. Powerful music.

  58. B.... ....

Best verse...best describes most of God's children...if not all.

  59. a.... ....

Not a Christian, but damn, this is some powerful music.

  60. J.... C....

  61. B.... ....

    Nice :)

  62. Q.... ....

"Prone to wonder, lord I feel it, prone to leave the God I love. Here's my heart O take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above"

  63. W.... T....

Some so called Christians are born and raised in Church and still have no idea what sound doctrine is. I think you're insulting Buddhists who have given up their children for the sake of their faith. I'd advise you study Buddhist doctrine more carefully. I'm sourcing my information from Ravi Zacharias a professor of religious studies ... but that's all by the by. The point is it's demonic nonsense designed by Satan to deceive you and make us hate one another.

  64. J.... P....

    Wtf hella musician

  65. J.... P....

Like this if you like to like things :) :) If not, then RUE THE DAY!!!!!

  66. J.... P....

  67. m.... ....

Beautiful video! Very moving. Big thumbs-up.

  68. R.... F....

    Texas forever

  69. M.... L....

wow you are a crappy buddhist. You start insulting people for no good reason at all. And nobody said that you wouldn't find salvation without Jesus. We believe it but not every Christian shoves it down other people's throats. What is wrong with you? Was it just to say "oh hey guise I'm Buddhist just FYI"? No one attacked you, so if you wanna be a good buddhist learn something from Buddha and stop being a self-righteous prick. I used to be into Zen and read a lot. Your behaviour is childish

  70. M.... G....

We can sit behind our computers and debate about the legalism and the truth behind God like many men and woman have throughout history. Or we could take a moment to be silent. In a world with nothing but noise take a moment to listen to something beautiful. Whether you are Christian, Atheist, I don't mind. Just listen to something beautiful and put your mind at peace.

  71. H.... t....

For he says to Moses, "I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion." So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy. Romans 9:15, 16

  72. W.... T....

So you say. Anything else I say will most likely frustrate you so I'll leave it here. I'd like to say, "I couldn't care less what you believe in" but I do. I don't want you to join a Church, I don't care if you'd ever think to call yourself "Christian" per se ... all that I desire is for you to study him ... but as you've said, "I'm good where I am". May you continue to improve.

    All the best.

  73. A.... A....

As I said, I'm good where I am.

  74. J.... ....

Let's all just listen to this beautiful song and be still.

  75. W.... T....

I'm sorry. I can be really insensitive. I tend to strive with a sort of desperation whenever I see an opportunity to reach out with the Gospel - which isn't all that attractive! ... but hopefully it's not too common. My brother, all I can say to you is immerse yourself in Christianity with ever increasing love. I highly recommend you YouTube Ravi Zacharias and Timothy Keller. Please do. They are profoundly moving speakers. And finally, may God bless you with increasing revelation, love and joy.

  76. W.... T....

I'm sorry. No, really. I am sorry. My tone was too harsh. It's just that I believe in Christ, and I know he is as the Christian scriptures portray him. All that I would ask, is that in your search for spiritual enlightenment, you take some time to reflect on the Christian scriptures. I am talking to you from a place of experience ... I was so profoundly touched by his words and life that I changed. Not that I'm perfect but a work has begun inside me. I only want what's best for you, Alex. Peace.

  77. A.... A....

I'm good where I am, thank you very much.

  78. W.... T....

Alexander, I don't know why you're listening to Christian songs but I suspect you enjoy the artist and that you are spiritual but concerning your venture into Buddhism I will tell you this: you must give up all desire. If you want to be a real practicing Buddhist you must not desire music, the love of your children, love of a wife, you must deny it all ... it's probably the most dehumanising religion there is. I find Islam more appealing but if truth you want leave Buddha, follow Christ.

  79. W.... T....

Kyle, do not give yourself to Buddhism. I don't know why you're listening to Christian songs, maybe you just like the artist but have become disillusioned by hypocritical or rude Christians. I don't know. But I want you to know that faith in Christ is the way. There's too much to be said for this comment, so why don't you contact me, and not Alexander.

I'll tell you one thing about Buddhism (actual Buddhism) it's stricter than Islam, there's no love, and it'll rob you of your life.

  80. A.... A....

I hope you are the former of those two options.

  81. A.... A....

I'm very new to the Buddhist lifestyle. It's only something I've discovered in the last 10 months, so if you're serious about learning more about it I would be MORE than happy to give you some additional information. I am, however, not at all qualified to "teach" you, I can merely direct you to teachers. If you're not serious about learning anything about it, and were just being contrived, then piss off and stop saying condescending things towards people who's beliefs you know nothing about.

  82. A.... A....

Doesn't work like that, man. I don't know anything about quantum physics, but that doesn't mean I'm at all in a good place to learn about it. There's about a dozen major things I have to learn before a quantum physics question would make sense to me. Likewise, with Buddhism, there's a lot of things you have to experience (not just be told or taught) before anything starts to make sense. It's not like a religion, where you just believe it and you're done. It's a life process and life commitment.

  83. A.... A....

You very clearly don't understand Buddhism.

  84. A.... A....

No, man, I totally understand that mode of thinking, but what if I told you that I started this discussion because, as a Buddhist, I just want you to hear about the liberty and joy in realizing that Jesus was speaking literally, that the Christian view of Heaven is actually a state of mind, and that you can achieve this here on Earth and discover genuine love and compassion for every thing around you. Would you fault me? I would be doing the same thing as Christians, just in different form.

  85. A.... ....

That Scripture, at least from my interpretation, would be more for the Holy Spirit in means of the Kingdom. Almost like we are diplomats for the Kingdom. And the real problem is just we see things differently. We feel that this is the truth and believe it with our heart so we try telling people. Don't be offended when someone wants you to hear about Jesus, we just want everyone to enjoy salvation.

  86. A.... A....

I think what Christine was trying to say is that the establishment of the Christian religion doesn't matter, only the deeper meaning behind the religion matters, and the reason why the religion exists in the first place. There has been an awful lot of killing/murder/rape done in the name of Christianity (see any one of the 11 crusades), but though those slaughters were done in the name of "Christianity", they were by no means done in the name of "Christ"

  87. A.... A....

Im not stunned at all to hear that you say He matters. In fact, I have no quarrel whatsoever with you saying that He matters to you. My quarrel is resultant from the Christian notion that if someone isn't Christian they're wrong. I don't think you're wrong for believing in Jesus as your savior, I just think the Christian notion of 'salvation' is misconstrued. After all, Jesus himself said "The kingdom of God cometh not with observation... for behold the kingdom of God is within you" (Luke 17:20)

  88. p.... ....

    jesus isn't appalled. jesus forgives.

  89. A.... ....

Totally agree that Jesus would be appalled and I believe He is troubled that I have a computer when there is someone out there struggling to get food. He had very radical teachings. But anyways, He does matter for He is the Son of God. He is important to us. He is literally God in the flesh and that means the world to His followers, so don't be so stunned when we say He matters too.

  90. A.... A....

To be honest, I said Jesus doesn't matter (only what he lived and died for matters) in response to someone devaluating a previous comment about the impact of this song on a non-believer in the hopes of placing more value on the message than the messenger. If Jesus were here today, he would be appalled that people praise his name but still manage to not live like he taught. Hence, Jesus doesn't matter, His message is what matters: Be a good person.

  91. A.... ....

To be fair, you started it. You basically called out all Christians by saying "Jesus doesn't matter." Plus he wasn't being pushy at all, just suggesting it. Don't start fights.

  92. A.... A....

I don't need saving, I don't believe in Heaven or Hell. If you do, and you have accepted him into your heart, that's perfectly fine. I did at one point too. But stop trying to tell me I need something that I've moved past. I'm not Atheist, I'm Buddhist, so let me believe what I want and I won't try to tell you that what you believe is wrong. There's a difference between being a good evangelist and being a nosy, pushy asshole.

  93. K.... C....

Love the visuals on this video by the way, well done!!

  94. K.... C....

Inspired!! I have praised God with this version many times at church, and plan to do the same this Sunday again!
