Sufjan Stevens - All Delighted People (Original Version) Lyrics

Tomorrow you'll see it through
The clouded out disguises put you in the room
And though I wandered out alone
A thousand lights abounded on our home
And I remember every sound it made
The clouded out disguises and the grave
So yeah I know I'm still afraid
Of letting go of choices I have made

All delighted people raise their hands

And I took you by the sleeve
No other reason than to be leading your leading man
And you woke up with a fright
Our lives depended on the visions through the night
All we had always, all we had always wanted to before
The hurricane inclined us, grappling on the floor

All delighted people raise their hands

Still the force of nature spurned
Ideas of strength and style abated by the burning basement

All delight people raise their hands

I'm not easily confused
The trouble with the storm inside us grew
But I had so much to give
In spite of all the terror and abuse

And the people bowed and prayed
And what difference does it make for you and me?

All delighted people raise their hands

And the people bowed and prayed
And what difference does it make?
It doesn't matter anyway
The world surrounds us with its hate

Hello darkness my old friend it breaks my heart
I've come to strangle you in spite of what you'd like
And don't be a rascal, don't be a laughing dog in spite of odds
All I'm deciphering from the spirits in the light within

All delighted people raise their hands

In restless dreams I walked alone I walked alive
The clouded out disguises left me in a dream of lightness

All delighted people raise their hands

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And what difference does it make?
I love you so much anyway
And on your breast I gently laid
Your arms surround me in the lake
I am joined with you forever

And the people bowed and prayed
And what difference does it make for you and me?

All delighted people raise their hands

I'm not easily confused
I feel alive I feel it glowing in the room

All delighted people raise their hands, all delighted people
All delighted people raise their hands, all delighted people
All delighted people raise their hands, all delighted people
All delighted people raise their hands, all delighted people

And the people bowed and prayed
Oh I love you a lot; Oh! I love you from the top of my heart
And what difference does it make?
I still love you a lot; Oh! I love you from the top of my heart
And on your breast I gently laid. Oh! My head in your arms
Do you love me from the top of your heart?
I tried my best I tried in vain. Do you love me a lot?
Do you love me from the top of your heart?

And the people bowed and prayed
Oh! I love you a lot; Oh! I love you from the top of my heart
And you can see through my mistakes
Oh! I'll tell it to you now; Oh! I'll tell it from the top of my heart

And what difference does it make
If the world is a mess; if the world is a mess?
And on your breast I gently laid
Oh! I'll tell it to you now; Oh! I'll tell it to you now

When the world's come and gone shall we follow our transgressions
Or shall we stand strong?

I tried to save the things I made
Oh! But the world is a mess, Oh! But the world is a mess
And what difference does it make if the world is a mess?
If the world is a mess!
I tried my best I tried in vain
Oh! But the world is a mess! Oh! But the world is a mess!

Suffer not the child among you or shall you die young
when the world's come and gone
Suffer not the child among you or shall you die young
when the world's come and gone

  8. C.... ....

This song is quite the achievement. I cannot recall a song this long that manages to stand alone as a single piece and not a two or three parter (or five parter like with SufJ's "Impossible Soul".

  9. J.... C....

  37. s.... ....

"Hello darkness, my old friend", that's a line from The sound of silence. Tribute?

    s.... ....

+scndsky He wrote this song with The Sound of Silence in mind as the biggest influence ;-)

    s.... ....

apparently he loves Simon and Garfunkel A LOT, so probably, yes.

    s.... ....

+scndsky So is "And the people bowed and prayed / to the neon god they made". Quoting or referencing _The Sound of Silence_ is not new, but it's still powerful. Neil Peart referenced it with "the words of the profits are written on the studio walls". (As opposed to prophets.)

    s.... ....

    definitely a tribute

    s.... ....

Sounds of Silence is woven in at many points. At 3.20 he sings almost unaccompanied:
And the people bowed and prayed
And what difference does it make?
It seems reasonable to suspect this is an homage to The Smiths song from Hatful of Hollow. Bit more of a stretch, the falling phrases eg pray-ee-ay-ee-ay-ee-ayed echo Beethoven's Appassionata sonata second movement. The cover art is a collage of delighted faces. Perhaps there are more things in here?

  38. R.... K....

    this song travels beyond.

  39. .... ....

All delighted people, raise your hands.

  40. J.... S....

I would play this song really really loud, and fall into it.

    J.... S....

    +Jacob Swenson Yes bro!

    J.... S....

Jacob Swenson strongly recommend everyone do this. It's so immersive.

    J.... S....

this song is like a apocalyptic choral. Remembers me of a poem by Wallace Stevens, Sunday Morning. The entirely creation and recreation of the world through sounds!

  41. M.... M....

F'n Epic Jam! This song needs a LOST, Breaking Bad, Or a Walking Dead Montage to go with it. Know what I mean?

    M.... M....

I literally have no idea what you mean.

    M.... M....

2 years later, and I know exactly what you
    mean!

  42. R.... M....

This is so good I'm dying

  43. J.... P....

  49. I.... D....

Here's a link to 8:13. You can thank me later.

    I.... D....

Doesn't work, dumbass. Fuck you, son of a bitch.

    I.... D....

Why you gotta be like that, love? At least he tried 💀

  50. J.... N....

He does, of course, sing them in a new light. In the context of the rest of his lyrics. Which I think is great.

  51. J.... N....

I don't know the context of this conversation, but I disagree with this. I think the possibility for new music far outweighs the possibility for new lyrics. I think recent decades are a good example of this with the increase of electronic music. I do agree there is a lot of room for new lyrics and expressing new ideas through them though. I think this is kind of funny because a lot of the lyrics in this song are from The Sound of Silence, a Simon & Garfunkel song.

  52. B.... ....

Or you could buy the song and listen to it on something that does...

  53. X.... A....

I love all of his songs, they are so beautiful(: now THIS is real music.

  54. M.... N....

nice man, thanks for the upload ! :)

  55. i.... ....

    Squint hard enough

  56. Q.... S....

Good point, and it reminds me of another thing that folks do; they judge the music on the purely sensual level without comprehending the lyricism or the deeper purpose of the music. Especially with indie music, so many folks will listen to music that sounds like other music they like (for example, "I like Grizzly Bear because they sound like [insert another indie band] without a. understanding a word of the lyrics or b. understanding that so much modern music is totally based on effects.)

  57. 3.... ....

    genesis..... really?

    3.... ....

There is nothing in this song like Genesis lmao

  58. t.... ....

You tube should create a visualizer option.

  59. t.... ....

Man, I think you've missed the boat on understanding music then...

It's art. It's going to be pushed forward. Also, the 70's produced a lot of bad music too - but hate the game, not the players (commercial music usually blows).

  60. S.... B....

    Grammar *

  61. S.... B....

There are so many things wrong with your paragraph that I can't address it fully at all and I do like Genesis. However, this is one of Sufjan's least tracks. Great, however he has much greater. Your judgment seems solely based on you preference to instrumental music, which is honestly pointless for recent decades. You really can't create new MUSIC (this is clear).Vocals and Lyrics are now what really set artists apart. Sufjan not only excels at singing, he's a brilliant songwriter and musician.

  62. d.... ....

there are grandiose songs... and then there is this.

  63. B.... A....

    One word. Euphoric.
