Styx - Sing For The Day Lyrics
Hannah you're with me in spirit wherever I go
To the ends of the earth and all points between high and low
Each night by the stage you appear as you are
The ever intangible child
Ageless and timeless as Dorian Grey
Hannah you're my inspiration my fountain of youth
And as your surrogate leader I'm bound in your searach for the truth
And yes how the truth rushes out
When it's become honestly clear
I see your anxious and curious eyes
But Hannah I need you as much as you think you need me
Come to your window tonight and we'll fly to your dreams
And we'll
Sing for the time of your life
Come for an hour stay for a moment
Stay for the rest of your life
Hannah don't fail me I need you like never before
Father time's at my back on my heels
Behind every door (and he says)
Son when the youth has but gone from your face
Will she let you grow older with grace?
Oh Hannah please tell me the things that he says are untrue
Hannah I'm honestly hoping you'll always be there
Sing for the day sing for the moment
Sing for the time of your life
Come for an hour stay for a moment
Stay for the rest of your life

Styx Sing For The Day Comments
Joyous, glorious, shining blue collar classic rocker - never preceded or surpassed as such by anyone else or the band itself.
This is Styx in their prime. Pieces of eight is their best album.
The band Styx is an absolutely remarkable band it truly is considered an antidepressant how can you be sad listening to this music is so uplifting it's a real gem if you agree with me give me a Hoot what's your favorite Styx song y'all have a great evening and by all means God bless the 80s
perfect
Always liked Chuck on bass in this tune
Tommy Shaw is one of the most underrated performers of all time. He doesn't get nearly enough credit as a vocalist. Incredible range and tone.
Only in my 30's but when my dad gave me his record collection i listened to Pieces of Eight a lot. This album gives me the chills. Especially this tune.
Love the renaissance -like vibe to this song. It could fit perfectly into a 70's rock opera or play. Tommy's a versatile songsmith.
Remind me of good times long past.
Beautiful Song
This song makes me happy for no reason- it is that good.
For whatever reason this song popped into my head a few minutes ago, figure I haven't really listened to it in over 35 years! Back in the days when we had things called "bands". And these band members actually played real musical instruments...that they spent years learning...and actually made real "music", writing real songs with real meanings and utilizing very real thing called "talent". This song brought back a couple memories maybe but mainly just demonstrated to me just how horribly talentless and shitty 95% of today's music really is!
I have nothing further your honor!
Like the vocals. Saw them live in 81 and was so impressed with how well they all could play and sing live.
This Shit is leaps and fuckin bounds better than the Shit that's ok the radio now and i was born ten ten year after this song came out
1978 I believe? not a bad time for music
37 people won't want to walk on the South side of Chicago!
This song is simple, i can dig it
I really enjoy listening to Styx ,calms me it's so Stress free .brings back lot of good memories .growing up in 70s 80s are the good years love ,happy no stress. Best times ever Styx will always be the best forever love you Styx .❤❤❤❤❤
All the times u lied about who u are
For Carmen, u make my heart sing, love u
One of my all-time favorite Styx songs
These guys are so great
Yeah I lost my dog 2 years ago the best friend I've ever had she can never be replaced and this song sums up her attitude to
Yeah this song talks to me to absolutely great
As a teenager loved this song but hated the opening chorus and the synth into. The part about come to your window tonight seemed to fit with my first girl friends who couldn't stay out late so you had to try some sneaking around. On my mix tapes the intro was edited out!
But Hannah I need you as much as you think you need me
Come to your window tonight and we'll fly to your dreams
And we'llJennifer I wish you could come out tonight and stay out late with me.
As heard on AM 89, WLS Chicago!
Sounds like something I would hear in a fantasy RPG game. Like a little tune you would hear when you are strolling through one of the towns.
Happy 40th anniversary of pieces of eight👍👍👍👍💑💑💑💑💑
Their best album by a stretch, not a duff track on it
@Stephen Lord i wholeheartedly agree sir!!👍👍👍
2:30 ... only a very good person would be able to write and play this .....

Hannah you're with me in spirit wherever I go

The ever intangible child

And as your surrogate leader I'm bound in your searach for the truth
And yes how the truth rushes out

Or will she give you up for one younger than you?
Oh Hannah please tell me the things that he says are untrue
Hannah I'm honestly hoping you'll always be there
Sing for the day sing for the moment
Sing for the time of your life
Come for an hour stay for a moment
Stay for the rest of your life
She looks like mi Mother
My RenFest song.
Anybody know who the woman on the album cover might be?
The last real styx album!!
Hear hear
Wow. Totally forgot about this song . . . Good memories.
Beautiful tune. I remember this song being released as a single in early 1979. I was SURE it was going to be a massive hit. It tanked. The B-Side, "Renegade" (another great song), took off and became a monster hit instead! I still love "Sing for the Day."
But where is the official PROMO VIDEO???!!!!! https://youtu.be/kLMqEKWOlXk
I love you Hannah.
this song has dark undertones listen to the words
Sounds like Yes back in their Tormato days.
It really does!
Tommy Shaw was a fan of Yes
around 1980. Sounds like jon Anderson from yes in the chorus.
Definitely sounds like Yes during their Tormato days.
Try 1978
Yep. 1978. And Yes - Tormato was also 1978.
Some of the tracks were released to radio in 1979, I remember very early summer 79, Renegade climbing the charts. Blue collar man that spring first hitting the radio
I'm a 5o yr. old metal head in Utah and I stole every Styx cassette I owned... thanx kmart...et.al.
Those were the days when security cameras were not available...
Well, there's something to be really proud of!
kmapart
U do good because it is good...
Good going! Now you're going to burn in hell for a bunch of cassettes that probably only lasted a couple years anyway! I always say if I'm going to sell my soul to the devil it's going to be something worthwhile, lol!
We Americans were head and shoulders above the world, and had no clue, because we were totally preoccupied with ourselves, we neither knew nor cared what the rest of the world was up to.. We had literally no idea how good we had it. We put men on the moon a half a century before other countries could launch a rocket into space. Really its amazing.
This was some of the innocent music of those times.
Paul Cavanaugh indeed....were
We can be that way again believe in America's greatness by looking at what we've accomplished in the past there is no reason we can't do it let's leave the naysayers behind.(USA)
@Mr. & Mrs. Stretch and Alda Twats Maybe America can rebound (I doubt it) but we will never have musicians like these again.
¡¡DESCOMUNAL!!!!!
¡¡¡Maravilla de Composición!!!!!!-
To my son Jake in the Arms ,,, Marine Core,,,,,,,,,, Peace be the Journey Jake.............
Does anyone else think this sounds like a church song, or is that just my curse?
Marisol Luchetti there’s a lot of gospel in Styx choruses/ background vocals imo
And yet another great blast from the past! They only kicked ass like this until the eighties, after that they joined the likes of "The culture club" and "Richard Marx". Oh lord help us!
I can't like this. 666 Likes...I can't fuck up my favorite number.
Haven't heard this song in...crap, 20 years? Still a great song.
this song has been my song lately. so much love and hope in this song. Thank you for the post!
We had to fast-forward this one in the Camaro in 1980. Too gay for 2 guys in a 68 Z28.
2 guys driving in a '68 Z28 and fast forwarding this song to disguise their gayness....
While you were giving each other handjobs…. You're too insecure about your sexuality to be str8.
Neal M you’re forgiven...
@Neal...U Mad Bro? - LOL. - We were street racers... LONG before The Fast and the Furious movies were imagined.
@World Coming Down 5779 Whomever was driving, was a street racer. Dude in the passenger's seat was nothing more than a passenger, hanger-on... and wannabe.
Good music never made anyone gay. However, denying yourself good music might come off, as someone who really was gay, attempting to repress it.
This entire album rocked, from one end to the other. All the elements for good rock and good times, were present. Dennis wrote "sing", using classical
song influences. (Hence, the synthesizer, programmed to sound like flutes) Classical symphonic music isn't gay, it's just sophisticated. Kind of like
James Bond, vs. "choose that movie thug". "Sing For The Day" was intelligent, thinking man's rock. If you wanted dumb and direct, there was always
Sabbath, or Priest. Never found anything all that inspiring in either band's music, though. Styx was that great mix of classically influenced progressive
rock, mixed with thought provoking lyrics.
had this 8 track...love it
This is such a magical track♥♥
this song only went to #41 on the pop charts in 1979!!!
Had much more play on Progressive than Top 40. My freshman year in college, so sad to think back. So, let's Sing for the Day!
An honest expression of hope...and joy. I grant you, its unlike what's heard today.
These Keyboard solos are "my inspiration my fountain of youth".
Seriously, one of the most underrated catchy songs and best keyboard parts (especially that solo) of the era.
I completely agree; this song shows mad skills. So strange people don't like it.
My favorite Styx song. Beautiful 💗
God, life used to be beautiful. And I sometimes look in amazement and awe at the destruction and waste the NWO dick suckers have done to the people and the earth. What an utter shame that otherwise good and righteous people believed the lies and lures of the greed driven.
This was at one time a Catholic hymn that Kerry Livgren turned into a rock song.
I see... well, that changes everything then doesn't it?!
Damned be STYX and Damned be sing for the day- I proclaim it anathema - Hereafter forevermore HEATHEN. My subjects shall dig up its' bones and burn them into dust.
You wouldn't think it was guy if you was a young growing man like I was when it was recorded! It brings back memories. Music has changed since then. But at the time Styx was one of the hottest bands of the day. We partied our ass off at their concerts!
Hannah was actually a metaphor for his fan base. He then named his daughter Hannah. Very cool writing.
Never heard that, but I can believe it.
Actually, Hannah was Tommy Shaw's daughter's name.. duh..
Just lost the greatest canine/friend I've ever known, and this song sums
up his spirit.....keeps replaying over and over....just insert Jake for Hannah.
Pure optimistic verve,.......so clear was his mission to please his owner....
I will miss him forever........thank-you Tommy Shaw.....
I'd like to see his picture too !!!
making me cry...gonna deal with this in a couple of months
i truly wish you well if it hasn"t happened already. good luck and god bless and i am not religious but when it comes to pets, i melt.
Should have also listened to Feed Jake by Pirates of the Mississippi
Same here bro... and jeeses almost same time apparently.......Burned into my heart of scars is : Aug. 15, 2015... ill never forget that brutal fuking day ( FUCK CANCER! ) swap out 'Hannah' for 'Senna' and we are golden.
Love you my sweet Senna!! Praying I see you in heaven some day.
since i was a kid buying these albums ...i've always loved Styx, my 1st concert ever...& the 1st line " Hannah your with me in spirit wherever i go " never fails to catch me out a little bit to this day....
great pick me up song.....forgot how much I liked it.
B-side of Renegade. Not my thing but Styx was like that. Had some jammin stuff then stuff that was 'flighty"
entered Billboard Jan 6, 1979 ..reached #41
styx today is my band of the day, so ill sing for the day with styx today.
This is the gayest song I've ever heard. Like, literally the gayest.
+Jakob Grimmius to not know great music is the saddest thing ever. You sir are one sad sack that must love rap. My truest sympathies dear sir.
Nothing to worry about Captain: no intelligent life on planet Grimmius.
You obviously haven't heard 'Macho man'.
interesting take on it. The average guy wouldn't read that into it.
Nice tune, good memories.
How has this song not been used as a jingle in a coffee, creepy hotel or mattress store?
Irish Spring?
Thank God for small favors!
A most excellent song.
This is dedicated to my "Hannah." I need you as much as you think you need me.
so...did it work out? 3 yrs later...did Hannah need you?
Forget Hannah. You need to BLINK!
Just heard it on pandora...Took me back to the day..
I have never missed them since 1975 at the paramount ,first row.
"[Meme] for the day, [Meme] for the moment,(...) [Meme] for the rest of your life."
@Lazy Opportunist troLOL
Butt hurt yuppies
@Lazy Opportunist Did you miss the LOL?
Nice tag line
There was a promo video shot for this, Blue Collar Man and I'm OK but the videos have not surfaced on here. Only saw a snippet of this in the Pieces of Eight album commercial which is on here (in grainy quality).
And you posted this 3 years ago? I thought I was the only one with the TV commercial on here which I posted only a month ago: https://youtu.be/kLMqEKWOlXk
My Hannah is named Tiffany. We've never met, but She is much love to me! I sing for the day!
Having finally heard the album version, I'm somewhat disappointed they cut the keyboard solo from the one that's on the 45RPM single. Keyboard solo or not, it's still a great song.
this song always puts me in a better mood
my thoughts exactly
Always thought this song had a real Medieval feel to it?! Perfect pairing with "The Message/Lord of the Rings" on this incredible album!
yep, whole album did
*Lords of the ring. The lord of the rings is the book series by J.R.R Tolkien
definitely!!
Trully a legend. Just wish Dennis hung in there.
Renegade, Blue Collar Man, Lady, Come Sail Away, and soooo many other great singles. STYX is truly a classic band. I'm happy to have seen them live at Jones Beach, Long Island NY. I brought my sons too. Great show
Just Perfect!
I was a D&D nerd when I was young. There was a character class known as the bard. A bard was an artist who was versed in fighting, thievery, magic and music (the class was inspired by such literary characters as the Pied Piper, Alan-a-Dale and Will Scarlet). Well, I always thought: If you take five bards from the Merrie Olde Worlde of D&D, and magically transport them into the modern day, the songs they would write are the songs of Styx, especially their early work. Now roll 2 d20.
Make this available for mobile...... pleeeeeeease....
My favorite song by Styx.
This, "Sing for the moment" by Aerosmith, and "Sing" from MCR, I personally think should be remixed together!
Styx....never had to rely on the chords of the "power band", they pretty much started the "hair bands can have talent" years before anyone else could catch up to 'em. Truly the Minstrels of the 80's which was the greatest decade of ALL known time.
Sounds good caseman, not sure what you mean by the chords but Styx has a great sound. Too bad they won't unify with Dennis DeYoung, then I'd go see them in concert...
i find it funny that you had Pieces of Eight on a 8-track.
I couldn't agree more with danning1. Most excellent tune!
One of my first 4 eight tracks. Love this album.
It's up to us to keep Styx alive, at leat on youtube.
Children of the 70's, unite!
Just proves that a band can make it without resorting to 5 chords for standard.
I haven't head this song in 25 years. What a nice piece of ear-candy!
Jethro Tull plays the meanest flute i have ever heard!!
Nostalgia!!
In 1980, when I was 15, I went to Michigan as an exchange student (I live in Brisbane) & one of the things I took back to Australia with me was a deep appreciation of the music of Styx - especially this fantastic album. Happy memories....
This is music.
