Styx - Red Storm Lyrics
You know I never asked for this
Always knew there was a risk
Should have been easy
Storm is closing in
The panic has calmed me now
Study and train for a worst-case scenario day
When clear thought and reason get tossed out and lost in the fray
Now the red storm is closing in
We can do this, let it begin
Everybody keep your head
Remember what we learned and read
Oh, we gotta get through this
Carry what you can
There's no turning back
Gonna make it to the mothership
Strap yourselves in, let the monstrous wind have its way
Only one way to go, when you can't fight the blows of the day
Now the red storm is closing in
If we make it, we'll be saved
Near yet so far
And I can't help but wondering where we might be
If we weren't where we are
In the whole universe we're no worse for the wear
And the stars shine so bright
Yet we're hardly aware of the scars our infinity bares

Todd Sucherman is a much better drummer than Neil Peart but not as good as Thomas Lang
This new album is freaking amazing!! I’m a little obsessed 😬 Todd, I keep getting better tickets so I can see you playing
Maybe the best song STYX has done in years! Drumming is off the charts!
Weird time signatures, incredible solo and effortless but any drummer will appreciate that subtle footwork on his hi-hat. How does he make that hi hat splash like that. Luv it!
As per Justus Balleweg's suggestion below...
Geddy and Alex want to tour. Do they call Todd, or Mike Mangini?
He is like mike portnoy. Except that Portnoy is sometimes rushing.
Absolutely love that ingenious 5/4 bell pattern he pays on the ride cymbal...
This has to be one of the best performances I've ever seen.

This is art ! Thank you!
I feel like Todd is getting like 1% of the attention and praise he deserves to get. I mean everyone knows he's a great drummer, but this is beyond belief.
NEXT LEVEL!! NICE BREAK AT THAT BRIDGE! MASTER
I'm a huge Neil fan but to tell the truth ...Neil doesn't have nearly the feel that Todd has. Neil is very methodical and Todd is Melodically driven. Both amazing drummers but I hate to say it but Todd covers way more of the spectrum of total drumming. Let's enjoy them both!!!
I’ll have to say after all my years of drumming and my sincerity to the drum set, Todd is my biggest inspiration on improvements.
Thanks for the eye openers!
Born 2/29/1956
Just Wow!.. Seems effortless.
Think what you will, there's no snare drum in this galaxy more beautiful than this (The Empyrean from Stanbridge drums, at just shy of five grand, my new goal in life). An instrument fitting for the master.
Fantastic! I've just signed up for Todd's Rock Drumming Masterclass course with Drumeo! Rock on dude!
So happy people still luv styx. Im a jy n Tommy shaw fan
Woaw!!! Trop hot!!! Thank you! Merci! Todd
Just. Damn.
PROG ROCK Lives!!!
such an awesome album best they have done in years it grows on you
This guy is a world class drummer, in the same class as Neil Peart! Rush needs a drummer, maybe can play in both Rush and Styx!
This is amazing....thank you!
Everything I'm hearing from this record makes me want it more and more.
I love this song! Todd, your playing and compassion is stellar! I learned so much at your clinic specifically the part when you said you like to read and understand the lyrics before you lay down a drum track! Very cool...thanks for your inspiration!
Excellent song and outstanding performance! I love this whole album, great stuff!
Now that's a drum set! Classic to progressive Rock. love it!
Todd love your playing brother....a big inspiration of mine and your one hell of a teacher.
WOW, Todd, you inspire me to push beyond my limits to become a better drummer. Totally inspiring to see how you flow so smoothly and with finnesse. Thank you so much for the video!
Geddy should take over on bass
thank you for that todd!!! ♥♥
This is my favorite song on The Mission. It is great that Todd showed us how he does the artful drumming.
Master!
I'm a relatively new fan but you are amazing, todd!
Epic! I did not really know much about Todd until I saw this on FB. Now I'm going through his DVDs and online lessons- Great player.
Sucherman has made Styx an even better band. He is a phenomenal drummer.
super - super - super
A true Master of the Art...
@4:51 and 5:03 😯
Todd, you're brilliant and a true inspiration. Thank you from the heart, for all you do for the Drumming community.
Dang...such a pleasure to witness such fluent talent...purely articulate mastery.
Love it!!! What kind of preamps do you use for your drumkit Todd??? Thanks for your reply...Cheers from The Netherlands, Jeroen Simons, Independent, ex-Epica.
At home I have a couple Presonus ADL600s, Neve and Focusrite racks.
Thanks Todd for the info!!!! Have a great day over there!!
If Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson really want to tour again and can't get Neil Peart to do it, just get Todd up in there and I wouldn't even be mad.
I agree - and the same goes with TOTO after Simon Phillips
Only problem is Styx tours alot I believe and he's been with them so long he has a good thing going on with them....but I kno Todd would do excellent in Neil's spot and I agree would love to see that if it could b done....sad Neil is having problems he's dealt with so much poor guy gave us as many great yrs and memories as he possibly could...God bless him!!!
@Kevin McPherson Simon isn't in TOTO anymore, he hasn't been since 2008.
This just may happen now. R.I.P. Neil
one of the best my friends just an amazing man his style of drumming is so full and rich !!!!
5:04-5:07 absolute master!
This is awesome Todd! I love the new album and this is my favorite song. 10/8 time, eh?
I love that Todd has the same expression on his face at 1:48 and 2:57 when the lyric is "Is Closing In" just as he hits the cymbal.
Absolutely amazing!! The drums are insane throughout this whole album. Nice job!!
Not available for mobile devices .... :/
Amazing! Love this album! Recently saw you guys in St. Louis. It's not often that I wish a 'classic rock' band would play more of their new stuff. See you guys next year (I hope)!
Todd is a Bad Ass!!!!!!!!!!!
Got the Styx CD this week and absolutely love it. Todd has brought the entire band to a new level. He is my addiction.
I am a guitar player but you sir are my favorite drummer. I love "The Mission". Picked up my physical copy (I'm old school) last week. Saw STYX at the Grove in Anaheim a couple years back. Brilliant!! Hope you guys get down to Australia one day. Cheers!
Amazing! such control....
awesome Todd!
Great video! Todd, you are a fantastic drummer and, always fun to watch.
One more thing, i just watched your drumeo, excellent ... i find you completely up to par mentally with my expectations of how a great person should be, but seeing your interviews about the business model of not being able to write doesn't sit well with me.. Most of us (millions) struggle to get by, and still write and record with next to nothing...not even knowing if 1000 people will hear it... Read that sentence again and let it sink in... We all know about money, not like your explaining a new concept to us... Were musicians.. :) It just sounds like theres one more piece of humbleness could be added to your greatness... Thanx for being such a great guy, i'll always respect ya.. And perhaps hire ya when i can afford to do so ;)
Rob, while I appreciate your compliments, I'm unclear of your "not being able to write" statement. I'm not sure what you mean...at all. And I don't know from where you may be quoting me. Sorry if I said something you found unsettling or whatever, or interpreted, but I'd never squash anyone's personal creativity in any way or in any forum. I apologize if I have offended you in some way. That being said, I have no earthly idea what you are referencing.
Masterful!
Todd's hands are a "soft hammer"!
This guy is so fucking awesome!
And his hands are not the hammer ....
the hammer is his drumstick.
hey Todd! just in case you forgot, you're the man!!! respect! :)
I love this. You have every element, rudiment and sentiment of drumming- From beating on hollowed out logs with an animal skin stretched over it, to classical percussion, jazz, blues (heartbeat and backbeat), rock, to modern gospel and rudimental chops, all just in this one song. Definitely a hard drum song to cover, and amazing to perceive! Thank you.
How effortless does Todd make this look? If I'm counting it correctly, it goes from a 5/4 verse to a 6/8 chorus to a 7/8 solo - and Todd bridges all of that so smoothly you don't even feel the time changes. TS is one of the greatest musicians of his generation - and should be in the argument for one of the greatest drummers we've been blessed to hear.
K West Hear hear! Well done sir well done indeed!
K West yeah...I've not seen better...such an incredible groove and pocket player, with an incredible vocabulary and flawless execution...a pure joy to watch.
and then he effortlessly puts it in reverse going from 7 to 6 to 5 :-)
Agreed! However, I think the verses are in 5/8, not 5/4, right? It feels like 5/4 because he masterfully accents the quarter note on the bell, which shifts from even notes to odd, measure to measure. Just proves how musical, effortless, and flowing he grooves this song...making 5/8 feel like 5/4. Did you notice the very subtle but tasty hi hat splashes on every other quarter note in the 5/8 verses? I didn't catch it until I turned it up and got past just watching his sticking. I want his chops!!!
Very nice testimate to Mr. Succerman sir well said and very kind and true!!!
Mick Fleetwood or Todd?
Todd, as he's more technical. But also because Styx is my favorite band. And it's funny you mention Mick Fleetwood, I would've asked Neil Peart.
There are NO hard rock songs on the entire new album.....Good album but expected a lot better after FOURTEEN YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHERE DID THE HARD ROCK GO????
"You" expected .. Is where the problem lies... "They" don't owe us anything, "They" obviously felt like doing the album this way.. Do you know that if you would have not been so rude about it, maybe they would have more hard rock on the next one? "Expected a lot better" is insulting, why don't you show us how it's done phil, make an album better than this one...we'll be waiting...
I bought the album.... They got my money... So I have just as much right to have an opinion as you do.... I LOVE THE ALBUM and i'm super excited to get new music from STYX!!!!!!!!! There is just usually some harder rockin' tunes on EVERY STYX ALBUM.... That's all I miss... But it didn't stop me from buying the album and it didn't stop me from giving it a GREAT REVIEW.....STYX has always been one of my favorite bands and always will be and Tommy Shaw is a friend of mine....We knew each other growing up in Montgomery, Alabama and Tommy still has family here.....Thank you for your opinion Mr. Overholt......
phil baker Alright, but you're just a little too harsh is all...
Agree.... Should have listened a few more times before commenting on the album......I've watched some of the reviews of the album here on YouTube and most of the reviewers are like me in one point.... We miss JY.... Only one very short song on the album.... That's mainly what I miss is that signature JY Rocker like: MISS AMERICA, GREAT WHITE HOPE, HEAVY METAL POISONING, HALF PENNY, TWO PENNY, SNOWBLIND........ and on and on.....It's a great album though with wonderful harmonies......Keep rockin' with Styx!!!!!!!
phil baker Sorry man, I was just sticking up for them, I thought of it from "their perspective reading it"... We both love these guys... It's all good..
Is there such a thing as a "Drum Zen Master"..?? Todd, thanks for everything you do for Styx and to also, show the importance of quality drumming in Rock n' Roll..!!!
reinventing drums and the magic of beautiful and relevant music
Amazing
Sounds Amazing. Awesome groove.
oh man! so happy to hear there is a new record. Ordered my copy on vinyl today.
What a monster on the kit. Enjoyed the video Todd, have enjoyed your playing since 1996. Awesome job on the new album, I have it on vinyl and played it all weekend on the turntable. Great job by all the members on this one. While a different drummer than John at times I hear some Panozzo moments on the album. Simply awesome.
Todd, wonderful composition and playing in this song! And may I add that the song itself is a great portrayal of what the band is capable of. So glad to hear the fire and energy- and exploration- in the new music- cheers!!
Todd encompasses everything a drummer should be!
I never listened to Styx until I became familiar with Todd. The vocals and arrangements remind me so much of Neil Morse, without the heavy prog influence.
There is a lot of prog on this song.
Styx was one of the original prog bands back in the day. The difference they had over a lot of others is they had great song writing that transitioned over to mainstream listeners....very well. There are many other great bands too, but there's never a dull moment with Styx. They've continued to innovate and move forward as well bringing the whole train of songs with them, even the lowly little caboose. Choo choo!!
Lance37a “Heavy prog”, as in the sound, being heavier rock. Obviously Styx is prog haha
Todd made me realise that Styx are actually cool.
I never get tired of watching you play! Hands down one of the best there ever was!
I'm so glad you decided to make a new record. This is an amazing song that deserves repeated listening. This is a classic Styx song that I hope fits in your future setlist. As a longtime fan of your drumming (I have both DVDs), the drumming on this song is awesome. Effortless, smooth, yet powerful and complex. Thanks for posting this for your fans.
Another amazing performance Todd! Huge inspiration to me. From your flawless playing to your humbleness and great attitude towards everyone, you are the embodiment of the way 99.9% of the drum community is. Thanks for being you and pushing me to be a better drummer and, more importantly, a better person.
Love the Colaiuta-esque approach to the odd meters, the way they don't feel jarring or jagged and feel smooth and comfortable. So many drummers play like they're screaming "Look! It's seven!" Todd makes this groove feel like a big fat lazy boy recliner. So comfortable.
Yeah!! Its not about the numbers I think, its about the big picture and thats the music and its flow naturally...:)
Simply amazing. Out of words for Todds drumming.
Awesome Todd can't wait to get this Album
There's creative genius in your orchestrations and what you deliver to anything I've ever seen/heard that you've been involved with. I enjoy and study both methods and mechanics dvds, and continue to be inspired by them. Great work as always!
Thanks a lot!
Awesome performance as usual!! I just wish there was a foot cam, it would really help me understand what you are doing.
Bass drum is actually audible, and hihat work is always visible, so...
Woow!! New fantastic song!! :) Thank you for this video todd! I'm your big fan, from italy!!! ;))
Todd Sucherman Such a tactical master. I'm not a percussionist...just a fan of your craft.
Todd thanks for the vids. Great tune. I enjoy watching you perform. You give me a shot of inspiration when I practice and I go to band rehearsal. Thanks for what you do.
Thanks, Mike!
if this was a VHS tape 3:27 - 3:36 is where my copy would be all warped from stopping and rewinding over and over again
Watched that very part about 20 times myself. Ya, I can't do that. LoL
It would be nice to see that in super slow motion.
Just lower the speed of the video
Ha ha thats funny but I kno what u mean he puts it on that kits and basically makes it look like its so very simple when it truly isnt
His fills take you on a journey for sure.
That was absolutely fantastic Mr. Sucherman!!!! You are a incredible musician, and Styx is an amazing band. I listened to "The Mission" in its entirety when it was released three days ago. Thank you to all of the band members for making a new studio record. And thank to you very much for posting this video on YouTube. When I first listened to this song and heard that drum solo, I was blown away by it. But being able to watch you play that drum solo was very incredible. Thanks again for making and posting this video.
Thank you!
