Styx - Killing The Thing That You Love Lyrics

Brick by brick you built a mansion
Piece by piece it seems
You're tearing it down

Once you walked so tall and handsome
Now nobody even wants you around
Now you're just some kind of
Leftover clown
Now you're like Quasi Modo crying

As you look in the mirror
At what you've become
Killing the thing that you love
Like Lennon's assassin
Lennon's assassin

Reaching for Venus De Milo
But she's never gonna hold you tight
You plant plutonium silos
Then you blister from the sun that's too bright
Like a vampire stepping into the light
Just a victim of your own greed as you

Look in the mirror
At what you've become
Killing the world that you love
Like Lennon's assassin
Lennon's assassin

The genius of a generation
Blown away just like a leaf on the wind
And now you're looking for salvation
But you can't forget the places you've been
And you can't erase a lifetime of sin
And you can't escape the answers as you

Look in the mirror
At what you've become
Dredging the river for what you have done
Killing the thing that you love
Like Lennon's assassin
Lennon's assassin

Styx Killing The Thing That You Love Comments
  1. q.... ....

It sounds like he's singing "Lenin", although he is referring to "Lennon".

The hard-hitting orchestral instrumental (interlude) is what I love by far most about this song. I am madly in love with it. Of course, the entire song is great, and the album as well. The album should've been a huge hit and even charting. I could never choose a favorite song from Styx, so I have large cluster of songs as my "favorite". This one has immediately added itself to said cluster of songs. And Love Is The Ritual is one of the songs in the cluster already. Glen should've had a stellar songwriting career of his own. That is blatant.

I find it fascinating that Glen Burtnik is the one singing this. Glen was brought in to replace Tommy in 1990 for Edge of the Century, when Tommy was committed to Damn Yankees, so naturally, Dennis had a huge say in picking Glen. Now, with no Dennis and the band moving on without him, Glen belts out this fierce broadside against Dennis (the Quasimodo reference removes all doubt, as Dennis wrote and performed his own soundtrack for Hunchback of Notre Dame). Apparently the entire band is credited with writing the song, but Glen is the one singing.

It's a fantastic song, too. And definitely feels like vintage Styx, especially the instrumental in the middle.

Bullshit. The song was written long before Dennis left Styx or wrote Q Modo.

    agreed mrs brywood.

Written about Dennis DeYoung I presume?

Can't a song be about two different things? :-) It says "like Lennon's assassin", what is like Lennon's assassin? The subject of the song, Dennis DeYoung.

    L.... H....

Why would you say like Lennon's assassins but referring to the actual assassin. That makes no sense. Larry is right. Songs always have multiple meanings, that's what good rap music usually consist of.

The song was written long before Dennis left Styx (or wrote Q Modo).

@Ben Glurtnik Just because it was written while he was still a member doesn't mean it isn't about him. Just look at other bands. *cough* The Beatles *cough*

I wrote it. It was not intended to be about DeYoung. I'll admit, there were many coincidences which became apparent later.

Excellent work by an awesome band.
All too often we are our own worst enemies...

This album SHOULD have been a monster. Thanks record companies for losing the plot.

  8. T.... C....

    Underrated album and song.
