Styx - Just Get Through This Night Lyrics

[Whispered]
"Help me Fans.... We'll make history tonight"
"I hear you fellow listees...Meet me at the voting booth"

This could be the longest night in recorded history
And as for sleep, you might as well just cross it off the list of
possibilities
(Now) The booth is in crazy mode
And this is just a fan fight
But I would smile if my man won
If I just get through this night
Oh, Oh

I could spend my time online
Defending my side
Pour my soul into each and every sentence
Then brace myself from the tide
Of attacks from the others
They'll state you don't know both sides
And I could bear the cold and stormy winter
If I just get through this fight
Oh, oh

Don't you know there's no place on this earth
Where you can run to escape the pain of a broken band?
We want them to make up but it's out of our hands,
Oh, oh
But now I've gotta get a life
Spend some time with kids and wife
And no longer to fly'

Styx could be a reborn star
The king of retro bands
Make us fly, attending many concerts
But they've split their loyal fans
If they would, end this current rift today
And know magic comes from the Big Three
They could blow us all away
If they'd only find their way, oh
If they just get through this fight, oh
So we'll have to get through this night

"Jonathon, I hear you...Meet me at the Paradise Theatre"
This could be the longest night in recorded history
And as for sleep, you might as well just cross it off the list of
    Possibilities
(now) I'm as brave as the next man
I won't turn and run from a fight
And I could last a million years
If I just get through this night
    I could be a novelist
    Tell secrets never heard
Pour my soul into each and every sentence
But I just can't find the words
Still I know that you're out there
And you can relate to it all
And I could bear the cold and stormy winter
If I just get through this fall
Don't you know there's no place on this earth
Where you can run to escape the pain of a broken heart
It's useless to spend the time it takes you try
But can't you see that I'm here
And I'm looking just the same
    And I don't know why...
I could be a movie star
    The king of hollywood
    Make them cry, dramatically pretending
    To keep romance alive
And I would humbly thank my director
And everyone involved from the start
I could blow them all away
If I'd only find the the part
If I just get through this night
If I just get through this night

    Alley Keosheyan

Holy crap, I always wondered what the whispered parts were, I could never hear them!

  17. Not Sure

I'm 10yrs old again... oh joy.

  18. A.C. Scharp

One of the best songs ever heard.

  19. Ken G.

Actually, I love this song. Always have...

  20. Jerry Roach

    Best song off the album.

  21. Beatnick

Ever notice the speaking at the beginning? A friend of mine pointed it out to me years ago, he told me it's Kilroy telling Jonathan Chance to meet him at the Paradise Theatre. I can barely hear it if I put headphones on and really listen, but I can't make any of it out.

    Debra Kadabra

    The closest I've come is

    J: Help me, Kilroy. *garbled*
K: Jonathan, I'm right here. Meet me at the Paradise Theatre.

  22. Overtime Freak

Ich fand den Song schon immer außerordentlich gut, vielleicht einer der besten, den die Band je geschrieben hat.

  23. Luis Carlos Davila

    Magnificent !!

  24. Gilian

    Outstanding.

  25. marion cobaretti

mr roboto was the only ok song , the rest : so so.............

  26. two arrows

    Montgomery native Tommy Shaw.

  27. Ranjit Souri

This is Styx's most under-appreciated song.

  28. Zorn Casteel

Great song! ... On an album that had about six good songs, on it.

    Deborah 78.

Well that's almost 80% of the album. So you must of enjoyed it a lot...

  29. Matthias

Dang this is a fucking great Styx album

  30. Luis Carlos Davila

Theres no place on this earth where you can run to escape the pain of a broken heart... at 55 years i surely know...

  31. Luis Carlos Davila

The Cover Is Absolutely A State Of The Art....

  32. Luis Carlos Davila

This Album was Awful... i still Love It!!

    Alley Keosheyan

God have mercy on my soul, I do, too!

  33. jmiester25

    Shaw > DeYoung.

  34. Michael Lahey

From a very long list, one of my favorite Styx songs.

  35. Jon Mendez

If I just get thru this night....!

    solskoldet

    I hope you did... 💖

  36. n8goulet

This is probably the best song on the album. Easily some of the best lead vocals we've heard out of Tommy Shaw.
And as always and especially on Tommy's songs, massive keyboard & synthesizer contributions with Dennis De-young. Can you image what this song would have sounded like without his input? Actually, I found out tonight exactly what it sounded like without the magic of Deyoung's keyboards. Search for "Tommy Shaw and Styx - Just get through this night" published Feb 18th 2018. Starts off with Tommy singing it to an acoustic guitar. Pretty cool, but Tommy's songs best songs would be a tiny fraction of what they are without DDY's input. I bet even Gowan is impressed with Deyoung's keyboard work on tracks like this. How could he not be?

  37. Chris Damon

I was always a huge Styx fan, but this album, as a whole, never really connected with me. I bought it the day it came out in 1983 and loved several of the songs though, this one in particular. I think Tommy really outdid himself on this one. This song reminds me of someone who was very special to me during that time of my life. Chills.

    Deborah 78.

As a whole, I thought *Kilroy...* was too over the top ridiculous, & corny. Nearly sounding like a parody album. This track, and *Double Life* were my favorites.
*Heavy Metal Poisoning's* music was good, but the lyrics were also too over the top. The rest were at best, mediocre. And I'm actually being nice here...

  38. 大内寛

    tommyのvocalからguitar soloへ移行する感情的な作風には感動します。!!!!!

  39. cathytai

This is actually the first time I've ever heard this album (and yes I grew up when Styx was a thing, lol) . This track is really cool and beautiful - LOVE Tommy Shaw singing this. Will listen to entire album now. Thank you for the upload!

  40. William M L Greer

the whole Japenice theme in this almba is awesome....greatest record ever recorded....

  41. Stuss H

    A very underrated song 🌷

  42. Elaine Williams

Tommy and JY sarcastically say that they "didn't know how to write songs about robots", but there are some real gems from Tommy on here. I love Kilroy and think it was a great concept, maybe the stage show was not what the fans wanted to see, but the album and concept were timely and brilliant. I miss the DDY, TS, JY, JP, CP version of the band.

    Nessun Dorma My Way

    Domo arigato sr!

  43. Tony Harrison

best song on the album. this song helped me through some dark times. brilliantly arranged. i'll never tell any of my hipster friends but i love this band.

  44. brangelo spanks

    ol' "stick".

  45. Tony Harrison

    Best song on the album.

    Luis Carlos Davila

    sort of

  46. Roosevelt McCarter

From The LP "Kilroy Was Here."

  47. Roman Gagg

I miss loving entire albums. Even when I don't love one of the songs.

  48. zudemaster

Sending this song out to all my fellow brothers with Sleep Apnea. Strap on your CPAP mask, crank up this song and try to get a good nights sleep.
Wow that was strange wasn't it?

  49. Daniel Crowe

One of their best, IMO. The rest of the album was/is good too. Just happens to be one of my favorites by Styx, along with "Suite Madame Blue," "Man In The Wilderness," "Lady," etc.

  50. Vaelsung1

This incredibly beautiful and haunting song still moves my soul to the core. Having heard this song again just now for the first time in over a decade, it is a truly stunning achievement by one of the great rock bands of all time and the best song on the album.

  51. Chanibear 777

Listening to the first half (the part with no lyrics) at the age of 5 in the dark set off a bit of trauma for electronic sounds in music at night. :(

    Chanibear 777

also listening to Pink Floyd's Welcome to the Machine ANY TIME.

  52. Scott Roberts

I went to the concert when this record was released. I remember getting board with the bands theatrics and finally left.

    Deborah Kerns

Scott Roberts ~ And that's what the Dennis fans don't get. They refuse to understand that circus theatrics do not go well with Rock -n- Roll. This album turned into a mess because of Dennis's obsession with broadway.

  53. hutch

In its day, many despised the Kilroy album for the its jarring new sound that betrayed what Styx fans expected from them. But, in my opinion, in retrospect it was quite brilliant. This song, in particular, is amazing. The melodies, the production, everything. I wish they could have kept their egos in check and continued to explore reinventing themselves.

  54. franki belt

i love this song. tommy sounds awesome. i agree this is one of the best songs i've heard from kilroy

  55. Zyra Jurado

My mom still loves this song to this day...it takes her back to her high school days and long band trips with her Walkman!! LOL

    Deborah Kerns

Zyra Jurado ~ I too was in high school when this was released late February, just days before my birthday in 1983. Sometimes I miss those days, sometimes not...😏

  56. Gerald Schafer

Reminds me of working retail on Black Friday. However, I have been a fan way before that!

  57. Elyse Solomonson

This is the best Styx Album ever....plus all the songs a very memorable, I first heard it at the age of 2 and my mom had it on cassette and record.

    Carol Allen

I wore out 2 LPs and 2 CDs of this album.  I saw them before this one came out.  It was their "Equinox" tour. I would have LOVED to see this one.  That being said, "Suite Madame Blue" alone was worth the price of admission!

    Ross Harvey

Carol Allen Wasn't that the tour they brought Tommy in to replace a former member? He stepped in a the rest is history. How could this band be what it is today without Tommy Shaw's influence?

    Deborah Kerns

    DocDoomClassic 52 ~ My top 3 are
    *The Mission*
    *Pieces Of Eight*
*The Grand Illusion* This album had a couple of good tracks, but overall was a poorly executed, with an over produced, too over the top stage show...

    Not Sure

Phhhht.... I dunno. "Lonely People" was an outstanding track, and not on this album.

  58. Werner Huehn

Anyone who thinks there is nothing good on Kilroy Was Here should say that after hearing this song. The best songs on this album were the non hits.

    Jon Mendez

An amazing album. All the tracks are meaningful, awesomely written and the melodies are beautifully thought out.

    Mike O'Moran

@Deborah Kerns don't forget about High Time

    Deborah 78.

    @Mike O'Moran ~ I was never into
*High Time* Just didn't do much for me. Most of this album was too ridiculous to be taken seriously. It was something of a parody Lp really.

    Deborah 78.

@Stephen Lord ~ 😂😂 Well you're not entirely wrong there.
Dennis went to a different engineer for *Cornerstone* and all the rest of the A&M Lp's from that point on. All to purposely soften the bands sound. So he could write more love ballads, and broadway style music...

    NinjaBluefyre

The songs are all good, and the world was working, but it just didn't come together as a concept album because of Dennis DeYoung's vision. He was very like George Lucas in that he ought to have gotten someone to fix it into an actual story. I've actually got some interesting ideas for how to make Kilroy was Here from a collection of themes into an working plot.

  59. 大内寛

イントロに流れる楽曲の楽器は”三味線”(shami-sen)という日本の楽器なんです。この曲はtommyがstyxの日本公演時の時に作った作品なんです。A musical instrument of the musical piece to play in introduction is a Japanese musical instrument called "samisen" (shami-sen).

    Deborah Kerns

大内寛 ~ 👍 Thank you for explaining. I love the intro to this track.

  60. Rui Calado

one of my favorite songs ...great lyrics and music by one of the best bands ever.

  61. Jason Railson

One of the finest heartaches capsuled in time. It still hurts.

  62. Rhonda Romiti

  66. Hey It's Lance

On July 2nd, I play this song every year, because on that day back in '83, I saw a fine brunette at a Greg Kihn concert at Great America wearing a Senor Lopez pullover. I just think about her on that day. I hope you're ok wherever you are at.

    Jon Mendez

Does anyone write awesome lyrics like this anymore?

  68. George Bickford

I love the shami sen(sp?) opening.

    Deborah Kerns

George Bickford ~ That's probably my favorite part in the song...👍🎶💜

  69. MrListenerman

Brilliantly sung by Tommy...really good song...and a an underrated album altogether..twas ahead of it's time. Great insight by Dennis de Young

    Jon Mendez

    Underrated!

  70. Richard M

The first time I listened to this song was in high school. I fell asleep one evening while listening to the whole album, and woke up to hear this track playing. It became one of my favorite songs from the album that night.

    Deborah Kerns

Richard McConnel ~ This track is my favorite of Tommy's on the album. The album itself was not a great one for me. But there were a couple good songs on it. "Double Life" was another one, and that one was probably my favorite from "Kilroy..."

  71. Warren

Tommy was the reason I got into music.  I love him and his work.

  72. nelson huard

the worst of all.this album is a desaster. That was the end for the band

    joe mccarthy

@nelson huard You have a tin ear friend. Your spelling is a DISASTER  too!!

    Deborah Kerns

nelson huard ~ I certainly don't think it was one of Styx's best. But there are a few good tracks on it, as this one here, and
JY's "Double Life". And you are correct, when you say it broke the band. Silly theatrics, and roboto costumes just don't mix well with
Rock-n-Roll. Also, Dennis bought into the new wave fad of the early 80's, which was foolish. Rock bands should never go with fads, because they will always become something of the past. DDY hates musical purests' so I'm not surprised he would go for the new wave sympathizer fad of the time. What many fans don't know, is that this album, and the stage show of the tour, lost Styx a lot of money. They were forced into doing big stadiums with hard rock acts, to keep from being financially ruined that year.

    matthewJ142

Worst? Every solo he does is gold! The band as a whole is what makes Styx beautiful

  73. Lani Karp

    one of my favorites

  74. rangerthehorse

This is absolute perfection, plain and simple.

  75. mario Atkinson Hinojosa

I WAS NEVER INTO THIS KIND OF MUSIC MADE MY DAY DREAMING MORE LIKE A STORY NEVER ENDING

  76. Mónica Sánchez

How I miss honest lyrics like his and delicate melodies

  77. Fred's Tune Up

This was the firt album I ever bought as a kid. 3 decades later, still love it!

    Stuss H

    Fred's Tune Up
That makes me feel old.. Although i was still skating @ the time. With my sony walkman on ..

    Charlie5thumbs

If I remember correctly, this was my third followed by Night Ranger's Dawn Patrol and Survivor's Eye of the Tiger when I was 8 years old. I was totally hooked. My best friend and I wore out those records while we strummed our tennis rackets in front of the mirror. Great times!

  78. Lani Karp

had lots of nights like this

    Dennis Chandler

    Having one right fucking now.

    Good times...

  79. 65metal

Hard to believe this album was bashed by critics, and also spelled the beginning of the end of the band of of DDY, TS, and JY. It is also widely considered to be the weakest of the original Styx' final five albums (GI, POE, CS, PT, and KWH).  But the bottom line is this album was one fine piece of work that puts to shame anything put out today.  Could be that Dennis' artistic visions at this time were just beyond what most musical 'experts' were able to comprehend.  Great vocals by Tommy as well.  Too bad these guys decided to go different directions, collectively they produced musical magic.  Most will agree that even Styx' worst songs are still great.

    Buff99ca

Original Styx was John Curulewski with DDY, JY and the Panozzo's. If you're going to include the A&M lineup, then you have to include Crystal Ball. I have to agree that this is the weakest of that list, but only because they others are just that good. Kilroy has grown on me over time and definitely ahead of its time in terms of the subject matter.

    Buff99ca

@ST3V I love Styx II. "A Day" and "You Better Ask" are brilliant. RIP John Curulewski

    ST3V

@Buff99ca Yeah that was a year ago. Its still my least favorite album but i like alot more songs from that album. I love all Styx albums, and yes A Day is pretty good, so is Father OSA and Earl Of Roseland

    Buff99ca

@ST3V nice that you changed your tune a little on that album. At first I wasn't fond of it either, but it really grew on me. I have it pretty high up on my list, and definitely my favourite of the Wooden Nickel days.

    ST3V

@Buff99ca I dont know if i necissarily have a favorite album from the Wooden Nickel Era as I equally like them all. I dont have any of them on CD but Im glad they are still available to listen to. All Styx albums have their own special styles which gives me different feelings after i listen to each one.

  80. SMichael Comp

F'n AWESOME..  I Miss the Boys from the old days.. and I'm old and remember

    Kai Slick

You aint too old. Enjoy the music of those times.

  81. Sam Hopkins

The Great 80"s music yet lives.

  82. Canada1991

Most underrated song by them in my opinion, absolutely love it, thank you for uploading fellow young Styx fan!

  83. Luis Carlos Dávila

Kyrianna you do have good taste in music kidoo!

  84. TheSpiritOfYAH

This was the end of the era here. This is a great track on this great album

  85. steve bashore

this was a geat styx recording

  86. happykat39

I am 72 and this is one of my many Styx favorites. Growing old is mandatory but growing up is optional. If I could still ride I would still be blasting this out of the stereo on my Honda Gold Wing. I was introduced to Styx by my stepchildren from my second marriage. They had all the albums and because Styx first road manager, Jim Voss, was a relative we got free concert tickets too. Styx eventually replaced Voss as road manager and the free tickets ended but by then I was a die hard fan.

  87. jjj11330

I just love the 'floating down the river in 'nam' vibe this song has....

  88. supergenius1337

@Andytheminstrel Just wrote two. I just went through this night. This song, right here. Good stuff.

  89. Supertron5000

@regionguy149 Nice observations, chap! I personally think music started to suck about 20 years ago when Grunge came out. The whole premise was they supposedly cared more about the music that 70s-80s bands but either way i think they had alot less musical talent. Even Grunge was better than todays stuff IMO...

    Deborah Kerns

Supertron5000 ~ I agree, most grunge was horrible to me. Vocals were terrible, the guitar playing was horrendous sounding. But yes, in retrospect, at least they played their instruments, which is more then I can say for these young, music celebrities of today.

  90. orses4corses

Kilroy Was Here was a great album whatever people say. This song is one of Styx's greatest pieces.

  91. Mark Castle

Always loved this song ever since I heard my dad play it when it first came out.

  92. The Spartan Airman

I have this Album and this piece is classic in fact the whole album is good

  93. Ian Dinkins

@urBabygirl123 im 13 and all i have on my ipod are their albums

  94. orses4corses

One of the greatest tracks ever. One person needs tarring and feathering. Lol

  95. Cr0ssb0w18

1 person didn't get through this night.

  96. Steven MLG Hawking

I hate modern lady gaga and t-pain who have no talent and only sound good because of auto-tune. People say the black eyed peas sounded bad at the super bowl because of technical errors. Why would that effect them? AUTOTUNE!!! I'm 11 years old, and this is my favorite band. Thums up tis comment, thumbs up the video, favorite it, copy and paste this on other songs like this so together, we can take over the internet and spam t-pain with comments like this. (p.s. STYX forever!)

  97. BlueXCanary

@xOffWithYourHead i'm right there with you! 16 with a true ear for music =)

  98. Afrieal

i'm glad to be able to listen to this song again. i have it on the strange black disk the aliens left us before giving us cd's but i can't find a store selling it on cd *sigh* ty styxfan93 for doing this.

  99. 大内寛

    tommyが三味線を弾いています。この曲はtommyが日本公演の後、studioに一晩こもって作った曲です。guitarの他、全ての楽曲をtommy himselfがplayしました。
    guitar soloは涙が出てしまいます。tear dropped!!

  100. jerry goff

@urBabygirl123 Hopefully it was with Dennis De Young because he was such an important part of Styx. I think they are not near as good without him!
