Styx - Jonas Psalter Lyrics
When Captain Jonas Psalter
Sailed his ship to sea
Anne Bonny kept him company
The skull and crossbones flew
The captain's men where a pirate's crew
The ships they sought to take
Were of the Spanish Main
A gift from Ferdinand of Spain
And though you rob and kill to find your dream
Your crimes are hardly what they seem
Tortuga held the treasure of a thousand kings
Two hundred men stood guard
Around the fortune's nest
But Psalter's steel slew all the rest
And when the smoke had cleared
And bloody bodies lay
Everyone could hear the minstrel play
Woo woo Jonas Psalter
You've captured every prize
There is to dream of in one life
And so we wonder why
We found you in your bed
With that bullet in your head

Styx Jonas Psalter Comments
Aarrgg matey....one of the greatest albums ever created
Jonah psalter altro ottimo brano del disco anche qui si va verso lidi prog rock sinfonici ma sempre sorretti anche da una carica hard rock insomma un bell incontro tra Deep purple huriah heep e Yes o ELP
Is that DDY or JC doing the synth part from :25 to :43? Wondered that for about 20-25 years.

I blame Anne Bonnie
I forgot that JY was lead on so many of the Wooden Nickel tracks. Rock on, guys.
Acorrding to Wikipedia, which may be complete bullshit, Styx says this is there worst recording.
Even though the "dictator" Dennis wrote a lot of them, including this one.
The Who, Pinball Wizard
I was just reading on Wikipedia that Styx considers this their worst album. Gotta disagree, Styx, personally I think it's one of your best; if not THE best, then it's right up there with Grand Illusion and Pieces of Eight. A rougher, less Styx-ish sound, and every song awesome, although I could live without "Winner Take All". Every other song is right up there on my list of Styx favorites.
Winner Takes All, is one of classic Styx.
winner take all, imo is the best one on this album
I don't care, ever, what anyone says is best album or worst album. HA! They got less groupies on the Serpent Is Rising tour so they say it's their worst album... ;-)
I seem to remember a voice or print interview with Dennis and he'd mentioned that writing this particular song was akin to an existential crisis. His writer's block was bad at this point, and he really didn't care for his lyrics or musical contribution to the song, hence the lead vocal duty going to JY.
@Brendan Mc DDY and JY were "off the board" (still are) back then. They didn't need them.
I would love to hear them play this in concert!
The last twenty-eight seconds or so are the best part.
The name is fictional. The name Jonas is the name of the Biblical character who allegedly was swallowed by a great fish and spat up on an island. The word psalter means a piece of text, similar to musical lyrics, that has some religious significance. Look it up on Wikipedia. You'll see. Hope that answers your question.
The Bible character is named Jonah, not Jonas.
that keyboard riff at 0:24 blows my mind every time I hear it! SO FUCKING BADASS!!!
This song reminds me of all these pirate movies that are out now, like Pirates of the Caribbean and all that, even though it predates most of them.
Does this have anything to do with Jonas Salk?
Classic song, JY has to do this song live. May be one day.
