Styx - I'm O.K. Lyrics

Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey, Eight, Skate, Seven on the Rotate!

If I could stand
Beside myself
Would I see me or maybe someone else
'Cause it's hard to please
Most everyone
When your spirit's got you on the run, on the run

They say do your best
But don't cause a fuss
Don't make waves be like the rest of us
But I can feel the tide is turning fast
'Cause deep inside I know that I can't last
Another day
Not another day!

'Cause I'm O.K.
I finally found the person I've been searching for
I'm alright
I'm feeling good about myself and that's for sure

'Cause I believed them when they said I must do things their way,
They tried to cast me in their mold
But I just had to say,
That I'm O.K.
I'm O.K. this way yes I'm O.K. Yes I'm OK!

I'm O.K.
I finally found the person I've been searching for (everybody sing now!)
I'm alright
I'm feeling good about myself and that's for sure (whoo!)

I'm O.K.
I finally found the person I've been searching for (yahoo!)
I'm alright
I'm feeling good about myself and that's for sure
I'm O.K.
I'm feeling good about myself and that's for sure
I'm alright
I'm O.K. this way yes I'm OK!

  35. A.... D....

    great seventies rock band!!!

  36. J.... ....

The last of Styx' master-stroke albums that started with Equinox, Crystal Ball, The Grand Illusion and this one. Man Of Miracles and Cornerstone were so-so. The rest, before and after, wasn't up to par, except for a song here and there.

  37. R.... ....

Have always loved this song. Also the organ part was recorded at my father's church. He was Dean of St. James Episcopal Cathedral in Chicago from 1972-1978. The guys from Styx recorded this right when we were moving from Chicago to San Diego in summer of 1978. Will never forget it when seeing them in the Cathedral one afternoon, didn't know who they were then, was only 8 hehe, but wow, what a special connection I'll always cherish!

    R.... ....

That is awesome! I knew it was recorded in a Church on a Pipe Organ. Chicago, and you were there. That is Priceless. I'm Jealous. Thanks for sharing that.

    R.... ....

This is good. You nailed it to summer of 1978. Thanks. I was 15 on the East Coast.

    R.... ....

Beautiful story! What a gem to always remember!

    R.... ....

    awesome

  38. P.... D....

If I was ever down in the dumps and I needed encouragement I would play this song over and over again. Such a good song to play to erase all self-doubt that we all get once in a while..I`m Ok.

  39. M.... ....

Ok, now someone please come up with the official promo video they made for this song back then. Along with the promo video for SING FOR THE DAY which you can see a little clip of on my YT channel here: https://youtu.be/kLMqEKWOlXk

  40. S.... L....

Why couldn't DDY continue writing songs in this vein? Instead he chose syrupy crap like Babe, First Time etc. The rest is history

    S.... L....

    He went artsy fartsy

  41. G.... W....

    Needs more pipe organ.

    G.... W....

pipe organ belongs in church not in rock music

  42. C.... C....

Walking into my high school with this shit turned up max ✌️

  46. J.... K....

Song makes me think when I was sitting in church, you know everybody is singing and i'm daydreaming of this song

  47. E.... T....

Alright! I love STYX! And.."Pieces Of Eight" it's a classic album, a real rock masterpiece, maybe the best of the band! I love it! \m/

    D.... ....

We always said "Sit on it and rotate!"

  54. C.... E....

this is my song.I found myself going to California in late 86 on my musical quest.inspiration galore

  55. P.... L....

    for we are...ok

  56. P.... L....

    Yes...a purity indeed...

  57. T.... G....

I'm not OK. Neither are you. But what a great late 70s rock song. And what great memories it summons. That bass line!

  58. B.... S....

love the instrumentation and layering of this song.Like a little epic symphony

  59. B.... S....

amazing song heard it ONCE on radio in 70's.This is SO Styx the sound and way people loved them

  60. m.... l....

If i remember right, this was also the B-Side of the 45 of "Babe" or "Come Sail Away".

    m.... l....

    B side Babe

  61. E.... G....

    sounds like GENESIS...

  62. T.... P....

What are they saying in the very beginning of the song when everyone is shouting?

  63. J.... H....

Most people are saying its nice to hear after a long day. Or a bad day. I agree wholeheartedly. Just cheers you up ❤

  64. E.... R....

The organ is from St James Cathedral in Chicago. I agree, a band willing to have the king of instruments as the lead solo on a song says more about the era of music involved as opposed to today. Love em or hate em, Styx had their day.

  65. R.... J....

Awesome band, awesome song, awesome album, awesome memories!

  66. A.... C....

17 people aren't ok  however 961 are fucking awesome

  67. W.... B....

Never much cared for DDY. I always thought Tommy Shaw made the band.

    W.... B....

I think they ALL made the band. The Panozzo brothers. No doubt my Alabama bro Tommy Shaw, James Young and Dennis DeYoung also did. Imagine a Zeppelin song without Robert Plants vocals. A Foriegner song without Lou gramm. Heart without Ann's voice. Etc. etc. Even if you personally only liked others in the band, it is what it is and history was made by who made it. Imagine the song Lady from Styx with someone other than Dennis voice. C'mon man......... That being said, rock on dude. We're all different with different perceptions due to what happens in our brains from what's input from our senses.

    W.... B....

Hang it, Dennis had his time and botched it when he went pop and artsy Fartsy

  68. B.... H....

    This is why DDY rules...

    B.... H....

I totally agree. It's why I think Styx isn't Styx with Dennis DeYoung.

    B.... H....

Brenda Herzog And also perfectly illustrates why Styx isn't "ok" without Dennis DeYoung. Tommy Shaw writes candy-ass lyrics with no depth. Styx needs DDY far more than Journey needs Steve Perry, by comparison. Dennis brought a maturity, vision and sophistication that is sorely lacking in the band after they parted company. I'm not even a huge Styx fan, but the void left behind is beyond obvious.

    B.... H....

YEP it sure is Gowan is clueless compared to DDY Go Home already

    B.... H....

Cept Dennis is artsy fartsy with his pop and love ballad T*R*A*S*H, at the time of Cornerstone, which makes PIeces Of Eight his last hurrah. Lawrence forever

    B.... H....

@Geils Sila Right. Because Sing For The Day, Boat On a River and She Cares are all rockin tunes.

  69. F.... ....

Good song! Good Band! kinda gay though, but the keyboards are to die for! nice 'arrangements' too

    F.... ....

Fongolitus I really dislike Styx critics. Seriously do you have any original compositions you'd like to share? The chord changes in the guitar intro alone with the church organ are amazing. Not to mention the drum intro and snare sound and kick drum sound.

    F.... ....

It's called progressive rock Fong, not "kinda gay".

    F.... ....

im a huge styx fan but im not gonna leave an extremely butt hurt comment. these keyboards rock and no, you guy's he's not criticising it he is emphasising it!

    F.... ....

    Glad somebody understands!

    F.... ....

"Progressive Rock" Like ELP YES, Gentle Giant ...okaly dokaly..this particular track is a little 'Gay' (Not that there's anything wrong with that) lol

  70. W.... K....

I love this album! I bought it when it came out, when I was 17

    I didn't!

    L.... S....

    I said "I'm ok"

    L.... S....

    I also said, "I'm ok"

  73. P.... R....

    That guitar riff is perfect.

  74. N.... S....

Great band. My wife and I have been following them for years. Can't wait to see them again in September at bikefest in ocean city md.

  75. D.... L....

    Teenager, mescaline, chasing skirts, fireworks

    D.... L....

oh my God I was 13.....scream singing this down the school halls after color-guard practice with my friends...loving life....masterpiece for sure. Im 52 now.

  76. D.... M....

I saw them play this at the Long Island Coliseum for the tour supporting the Pieces of Eight album and couldn't get how powerful this was. The vocals were stellar, the guitar mean, and the synthesize reminded me of a siren of joy.

  77. B.... S....

Fantastic track!! I first heard this superb album when I went to Sterling Heights, Michigan as an naive 15 year old Australian exchange student in 1980. Never heard of Styx before that so I didn't know what I was missing out on!

    B.... S....

+Boson Spin:  One of my favorite tracks by Styx.

  84. T.... ....

I love this song so very much. It's nearly my theme song, except Too Much Time On My Hand likely takes that haha. I just wish I had this song whilst I was a kid.

  85. u.... ....

This album is a masterpiece; beginning to end. If you're ever having a bad day, feeling down or adequate, listen to "I'm OK". Every song on this album seems like it was "meant to be". That is rare.

    u.... ....

Unclespeedy now there’s someone who knows their music,a masterpiece indeed.

    u.... ....

I think you meant "feeling down or inadequate". :-)

    u.... ....

Been feeling down on myself lately then I remembered "I'm OK."

    u.... ....

Next up is Pieces of Eight

    u.... ....

My theme song, being a bit of an oddball ("WOOF WOOF WOOF!").

  86. L.... D....

  88. N.... M....

Proving once again that like "cow bell", in rock you can never have too much pipe organ.

    N.... M....

    +James Kirk lol

    N.... M....

They recorded the pipe organ in a famous church in Chicago. Supposed to be Huge.

    N.... M....

James Kirk you wish you were james kirk

  89. N.... J....

The riff starting at 2:50 is one of the best I've ever heard.

  90. A.... ....

This brings back some awesome memories, of being a Kiddo, borrowing this album(remember vinyl?) from my brother in law, along with every other STYX album pre-80's

    A.... ....

@AntiguaDreams my dad,s girlfriend left him...and Grand Illudsion and Pieces of Eight 8 tracks:) yea!! being 12 with these in 79, well i was kinda cool...thanks dad

  91. T.... ....

Such a great song, and wonderful album.

  92. V.... B....

esta  canção  era  o  genérico  do  Rock em  Stock,  no  inicio  dos  anos  80.

  93. l.... ....

Clearly, the final part (min. 4:56 to 5:50) shows the influence of the Genesis "Squonk" song

  94. R.... ....

Love the organ starting at 3:10.

  95. c.... ....

I haven't heard this tune in an age.  It's kind of dated, but to hear it again I can hear all the things in it that I loved.  There is a purity.

    c.... ....

The sound is seriously dated.  It's not a slight.  No one makes music that sounds like this these days. You know, with harmonizing; an actual melody.  It is dated.  I don't mean it isn't good, or it's not timeless.  But you close your eyes and listen, you can guess the decade it came out.

    c.... ....

@cevansinz You can say that about any song in the 60's and 70's as they don't make music like that any more. To me a song sounds dated if it doesn't hold up today, which doesn't apply to this song. In my opinion

    c.... ....

@cevansinz You certainly would be hard pressed to find a song now that has an extended interlude from one of those big church pipe organs. I don't think churches even use them anymore...

    c.... ....

Neal M what do you know about pipe organs?

    c.... ....

@ Greg, my grandfather played organ in his church, and took us to a church in Pittsburgh one time where he was able to play a hymn on their pipe organ. It was amazing and I still have a bit of a dormant fascination with them and their unique sound.

  96. k.... a....

amazing track , in my ALL time top 5 .. fab!!!

  97. o.... ....

This album is one of the best albums of all time. Absolute Masterpiece!

    o.... ....

    orses4corses
Their best album, that's why Cornerstone was such a disappointment

    o.... ....

Stephen Lord ~ Yes, but only because of Dennis turning to bubblegum ballads. Most of *Tommy's* compositions on *Cornerstone* were actually pretty good.

    o.... ....

    Deborah Kerns
Boat on the River was good, Love in the Midnight was VERY good, the rest were pretty average /forgettable. Agree with one of your comments elsewhere though that The Mission is great

    o.... ....

Mine as well, along with Pieces OF Eight

    o.... ....

@Stephen Lord "Babe" was great. " First Time" was cringeworthy.

  98. M.... ....

This is such a great tune from Styx. There is only one "original' member left and that is James (JY) Young. I don't care much for the current lineup though. ROCK ON!!!!!!

  99. I.... ....

I loved how Styx used the Obies. Sounded awesome.
