Styx - Clair De Lune / Ballerina Lyrics

It seems you finally had to choose
I guess there was no other way
Between my love and satin shoes
I knew the words you'd have to say

It all began so long ago
That the memory's hardly clear
But when I seen you dance I know
Half your love I'll always share

Ballerina when you dance there's music
Colored lights illuminate your movement
Crowded halls anticipate your gentle smile

Ballerina from the first I knew that
You would always have to dance I knew that
There would surely come a day when you would go
Baby I know...

Dance for me, I beg of you, dance for me
Dance for me, ballerina, dance for me

Ballerina when you dance there's music
Colored lights illuminate your movement
Crowded halls anticipate your gentle smile

Styx Clair De Lune / Ballerina Comments

This song is much better than lots of the songs on the radio nowadays. Kind of wish I could have been born earlier to hear great music like this come out.

  3. B.... L....

Loved this since I was a teenager ❤️

  4. K.... v....

..........and the memories come flooding back........

  5. F.... L....

Guitarists were much better than the rest of the band.

  6. f.... n....

starts at 2:53, I've always been fascinated by this part of these beautiful guitars played by James Young and Tommy Shaw ... the cymbals by drummer John Panozzo are also matching ... all the music is beautiful ...

  7. D.... B....

I almost cry when I hear this. Crystal Ball was the frst album I ever bought. I loved it. I loved seeing them in concert. I can remember Dennis DeYoung playing this on the piano and thought what a truly GREAT musician. Tonight I learned from another youtube video that Clare De Lune was Dennis' father's favorite classical piece of music. What an amazing guy he is. I wish I could see Styx back together live in concert again.

  8. R.... H....

    ...dance for me...

  9. R.... H....

Equinox & Crystal Ball were always my two favorite Styx albums. Ran the 8-track versions of these so much they had to be replaced. Nice with streaming you can here them any time you want.

  10. D.... H....

The ultimate song about a man lamenting about a girl he loves but has to share with the rest of the world. She is so incredible when she dances he is jealous that other men love her.

  11. M.... M....

If a woman figure skater choreographed her routine to this tune, a.) I'd totally watch and b.) totally win the gold medal

  12. J.... S....

seen them do this in concert. so awesome. totally underestimated ! they were amazing!

  13. s.... ....

Young people do not know rock and roll. Why is this not a sport theme song?

  14. S.... L....

Criminal that this masterpiece has only 86k views. I must have viewed it a thousand times ffs

  15. C.... D....

Absolutely stunning. This is one of those Styx tracks I played into the ground back in the '70s. I never got tired of it. They really knocked it out of the park with this masterpiece.

    C.... D....

Chris Damon this one and Song for Suzanne for me.

  16. S.... L....

This has to be one of the finest pomp rock songs of all time. Love how it slowly winds up from the classical piano start, through the vocal verse and chorus and into the epic duelling guitars finale. It has a touch of genius.

  17. R.... S....

    Oh such joy !

  18. K.... D....

Got this album when it came out I played it a lot . Fast forward 40 years rediscovered it . Blew me away how great this album truly is

  19. R.... O....

    the great white north!

  20. R.... O....

    ear candy

  21. S.... B....

My carpal tunnel syndrome flared up trying to keep up with the guitar solos (Air guitar)
.... first time hearing this song. :)

  22. J.... P....

i do know that Claire de Lune the rendition carries on to Ballerina which is epic!! I just love this and always have since i was so young!! Anyway i cannot play ballerina on the piano for the life of me and it sucks i have tried

  23. V.... ....

    Mac: I hate you.

    Frank: Wait, what-?

Mac: How can you say such a thing?

You do not understand my pain.

You do not understand what I have been through.

Frank: What the fuck are you talking about?

Mac: I was first born in a laboratory, unknowingly falling into a pit of immortality.

    Life was hell.

Mac(In robot form): Gyaaah, ahh! Ahhhh! uhhuhuhu!

No, i dont want to go! No! No! No i dont want to go...

    Gyahahdyahaha!

    AAAAAAAHHH! AAAAHHH! GOD!

    Awwwwahaha!

Mac(Present): I knew everything in the universe.

Yet I could not fall in love.

I was forever trapped in an infinite timeline of pain and suffering.

    I envy death.

Technology is just another thing to distract you from the real joys of life.

    Technology will kill you.

    Run.

    Run.

    Run.

    Frank: No...

Mac: I can no longer sit back and watch my loved ones die.

I want to be hidden from this world where no body will find me.

Frank, throw me in the river so that I can be at peace.

Throw me in the river and let me sink to the bottom.

    Frank: We need to go.

    V.... ....

Vaeldras what are you quoting? Sounds as if a dialouge....

  24. J.... P....

Everytime i play Claire de Lune on the piano it takes me back to this beautiful rendition by Dennis Deyoung

  25. s.... ....

    s.... ....

    BÖC Agents of Fortune, too.

    s.... ....

Not to mention Blue Oyster Cult Agents of Fortune.  The fall of 1976 totally rocked.

  26. l.... ....

DDY doesn't do this live now. He SHOULD!

  27. J.... P....

I had forgotten this long lost masterpiece

    J.... P....

Real 100% true music that many of us have forgotten. Listen well...Music from the past will never be heard again

  28. A.... M....

Always adored this, I love the way the two fit together. Love to see a video of a dance for this, it is so open to interpretation.

  29. X.... L....

    I love it...

  30. J.... L....

This really is kicking it :]

  31. D.... C....

Dance for me... I beg of you, dance for me...

  32. g.... ....

Most underrated album in classic rock history..

    g.... ....

Dale Rogerson My favorite as well..

    g.... ....

Michael Cole No Queen song here sorry

    g.... ....

    Florida has always had taste!

    g.... ....

    ALMOST MAN ALMOST

    g.... ....

From Equinox to Pieces of Eight Styx simply could not be touched. It was generally songs that didn’t get a lot of airplay that were the best, IMO...Born for Adventure, Mother Dear, Suite Madame Blue, Clair de Lune/Ballerina, Miss America, Castle Walls, I’m OK, Pieces of Eight...the only other guitar duos that I think sound as good as JY & TS did here are Joe Walsh & Don Felder on Hotel California, Dick Wagner & Steve Hunter on the live version of “Sweet Jane,” and my favorites, Dave Murray & Adrian Smith of Iron Maiden.

  33. g.... ....

I remember playing the "Crystal Ball" disc more than any of their others(huge Styx fan). I remember hearing this final track for the first time and just being BLOWN AWAY by what I heard. Dennis DeYoung really took the era of 70's "romanticized rock" to the pinnacle with this composition- building a love song from one of the most romantic & beautiful works of classical music ever composed. Pure genius....

    g.... ....

    +gemini16th
Hahaha i listened to this old man first and remembered that that sound was split on 8 track and in the middle of the song track would click and end the song in the next track.

    g.... ....

Never Ever listen to 8 track when I found out some songs were cut right in half.  ( I don't mean to be arrogant )  I later came to find that more times than not, that my favorite song on any given LP was was the longest piece on the LP.

    g.... ....

    @Doug Bechdel
Yes- I remember 8-Tracks(faintly)..and remember they did sometimes interrupt/split a long track often on those formats. Really sucked(plus the crappy audio quality compared to record albums played on a good quality home stereo system(aka Pioneer). Cassette tapes were more popular & portable, and luckily spelled doom for the 8-track format.

    g.... ....

I never even had an 8 track but I do remember reel to reels when I was probably 10 or 12

    g.... ....

...and what's ironic is that if you listen to the "fade-in" between the opening track("Put Me On") & "Mademoiselle" on Crystal Ball it really sounds like an 8-Track "switch" sound effect- like to think the band had that intention in mind while recording.

  34. 8.... ....

I adore this song and adore Styx. Always have, always will.

  35. J.... ....

    The sweeter memories for sure,

  36. J.... S....

the best Styx song ever, how can anyone not like this? it may be one of the best songs ever created even if you hate this band you have to admit to it. when it goes into the string part it's on!  "Dance for Me I beg you" sends chills up the spine then the solos/harmonies hit you like a ton of bricks and keeps on going...this section of the tune rivals Hotel California! in many ways it is better, 10 times more feeling before it ever gets there then it leaves you stunned at the end going man "I gotta hear it again!"

    J.... S....

Grand so son grand so indeed

    J.... S....

    OPERA PRIMA

    J.... S....

agreed it was  under rated too

    J.... S....

it's only the best because you say so & i say you're wrong. Styx has many good songs. i'd say you have a case of the you don't know what the fucks you're talking about. let me enlighten you just a bit so u can actually give credit where credit is due. First of all, everyone in the studio running controls, and especially the ones who will be doing the mixing. the producer, the director etc etc etc. so there are more than just the group. they have always been good, at least the were then they sold out. end of story.

    J.... S....

Happy for you bro. Remains me my past youth. NO regrets!!¡!!!

  37. r.... ....

Tommy joins the band....and immediately proceeds to fucking wail. God, Styx is just simply one of the greatest American contributions to rock music ever.

    r.... ....

Cannot deny anything you said, but even pre-Shaw they were awesome

    r.... ....

    +Mike H lol

  38. C.... G....

rock come back hard again I need you so much ´cause it´s useful to me

  43. J.... D....

Wow, you know. You may bee right. Never thought of it that way b4...

  44. J.... ....

1977 ? So beautiful, My most favorite song :))

  45. L.... C....

Since 30 years ago i´ve said it!! and you have always done it!! Dance for me!!

  46. L.... C....

Got damn you´ve cannot said it better!!

  47. y.... ....

I don't know about DeYoung's inspiration for the song, but in conjunction with the album art and 'Clair de Lune' I've always imagined Ballerina being about a sad, angst-ridden man coming to terms with (most likely) years of slowly being pushed out of his lover's life, a casualty on the long road to perfection. I've always liked imagining Tommy and JY's dueling guitar solos as representing a heated argument between the two. But you know what they say, great art can be interpreted many ways. :)

  48. W.... C....

Interesting comments below. Ummm, not really about a gal in tights.
More like a brass pole and red satin high heels. Not much clothes...involved.

  49. b.... ....

Man, wish they would've done this one live. This is SUCH a great tune from Styx. Excellent.

  50. R.... L....

This has to be the best. I love "Ballerina", and "Mother Dear", James DeYoung, Tommy Shaw are out-standing, as you all are. Sorry to hear about Chuck, and John. My condolences. I saw you in Sudbury (yes- the arsehole of nowhere) during your Grand Illusion tour. Love it all. My best

  51. D.... ....

this is real music from great artists!

  52. e.... s....

this is styx at their best.......the 70"s

  53. c.... ....

Dennis DeYoung...What a genius, to use Claire de lune, as an intro to "Ballerina"!! A lot of people, have never heard this, because "Crystal Ball", wasn't as big of a seller, as "Grand Illusion", "Pieces of Eight", or "Paradise Theater".

  54. M.... E....

    I LOVE THIS SONG <3

  55. R.... ....

C minor (C Eb G) thats all i know haha

  56. o.... ....

@system01 ....which makes it a natural segue from "This Old Man".....thanks, system01; either didn't know that to begin with, or must've since slipped my memory.....no doubt about it; in a lot of ways CB is the most consistently compelling post-JC record; holds up well to repeated spins!

  57. T.... P....

underrated band for sure, sounds awesome on vinyl!

  58. K.... J....

Does anyone know the chords for this song from when Dennis first starts singing?

  59. d.... ....

This is my favorite Styx song. And I LOVE styx

  60. b.... ....

I don't think this song was released as a single, was it? If not, it should have been! It's so beautiful... and it even rocks in the end!

  61. C.... G....

Great album. Tommy Shaw wrote the title track. He joined the band on this album.

  62. w.... ....

    STYX---''CLAIRE DE LUNE/BALLERINA''

  63. J.... ....

Claire De' Lune~~~~Stxy made it so sexy..:)

  64. n.... ....

probably their best song ever....a masterpiece...I always liked more Styx over Journey, Foreigner, Kansas...among these kind of bands they are N.1!

  65. N.... L....

I was like I needed a long song to listen to and my mom listed off this as the second and its pretty good

  66. s.... ....

ohh! how lovely! I'm a dancer my self and i think my dearest fantasy is to dance with Barishnakov to THIS song.

  67. c.... ....

    @eyeballs50 lol nice one.

  68. c.... ....

@Gofboats reading that, well it was poetry.

  69. A.... ....

The dueling solos between J.Y. and Tommy are insane! Starting at 5:10.

    A.... ....

I would sit between my speakers, but with my back to them, for JY and Tommy's guitar harmonies. NOTHING sounded as good! These guys are brilliant! An amazing album!

  70. L.... ....

You're right, MrDoctorX : These guitar solos are the band's Hotel California. I get a high every time I hear this song. DDY has a beautiful voice. And JY and TS are just our guitar heroes ! What a turn on. What is above the sound of an electric guitar ? What, except God and... ?

  71. l.... p....

hola , luis pedro mty mex mi favorita de styx especial creci con styx ,,,,,,,,,
ballerina ,,, imaginacion grande bravo styx bravo, imaginacion
    bravo
    bravo por JENNIFER......
    BRAVO JENNIFER

  72. m.... ....

    YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!

  73. m.... ....

I love that song; perfect end to arguably my favorite Styx CD

  74. s.... ....

DeYoung's intro. to Clair De Lune on the "Music Of Styx" Cd states that this actually was his father's favorite piece of classical music- during the war, his father was stationed in Holland, staying with a family- their oldest son was a concert piano performer & he played it often for DeYoung's father.

  75. s.... ....

(From a long-time Styx fan): this is one of my favorite albums from them, as it includes both the group's rock tracks & Dennis DeYoung's "romantisized" compositions he like to write(like 1972's "Lady"). He performs Debussy's "Clair De Lune" on his solo "Music Of Styx w/ Symphony Orchestra" CD.

  76. k.... ....

kick ass bro !! awesome track.

  77. K.... P....

thank you sooooo much for putting this song on you tube.. i love it sooo much!!
