Styx - Borrowed Time Lyrics

Yeah yeah!
Don't look now, but here come the eightees!

I was so cool back in sixty-five
I had it made 'cause I understood what to do to survive
I had my car, and I made the scene
Didn't give a damn about no gasoline
They can go to hell
My friend we never thought about the world
And its realities
The promised land was ours
We were the Great Society

I'm so confused by the things I read, I need the truth
But the truth is, I don't know who to believe
The left say yes, and the right says no
I'm in between and the more I learn
Well, the less that I know
I got to make a show

Livin' high, living fine
Livin' high on borrowed time

Yes! No!
Yes! No!
No! Yes!
No! Yes!

Faith be with me now
I'm just a dreamer in a dreamland
Faith be with me now
I'm just a dreamer in a dreamland

'Cause we're
Livin' high
Livin' fine (You know I'm livin' fine)
Livin' high (Yes I'm livin' high)
On borrowed time (On borrowed time)
Livin' high (Whoohoo!)
Livin' fine (Ahhh!)
Livin' high
On Lake Shore Drive (Midnight ride)
Livin' high (We're livin' high)
On Leslie Lane (Let's go back and play it again!)
Livin' high (We're livin' high)
On Red Bud Trail (On Red Bud, Red Bud Trail!)
Livin' high
On Central Drive (He's on Central Drive!)
Livin' high (We're livin', livin' high)
On Prestwick Drive (Catch me on Prestwick Drive!...)
Livin' high (...gettin' in and drivin' my Mercedes...)
Livin' fine (...up and down and up and down -- sh*t! I don't....)

Oh yeh...blooming good or what :)

  2. j.... ....

...37 people had to pay back the time they borrowed.

  3. j.... ....

...Biggest thrill of the year was...soaring 2 hours over the autumn foliage-covered mountains...? Nope, the most awesome moment was meeting Tommy Shaw two night ago!!

  4. R.... S....

    Styx is myfavorite band

  5. a.... w....

This song was way ahead of it's time when it came out.

  6. E.... I....

Don't look now, but here come the 80s! 😂😂😂 I feel so old

  7. r.... y....

People were more realistic back then. They lived with an ebb and flow mentality. Face to face communication. I was 11 yrs old then. Very lively childhood. Played outdoors, came in late during the summer, got rides from people whom i did not know well, walked to school alone, got into some fights with other kids, walked to the park alone during the day and at night. Once slept walked to a gas station and slept in front of the store but my sister came to get me. Those were carefree days where my parents cared but didnt worry too much. Radio stations like wgcl cleveland were a blast!

  8. J.... L....

Styx are the kings of the rock ballad, no one does em better!

  9. a.... p....

Should have weigh more views..............................weigh more!!

  10. D.... 7....

For me, the best songs on *Cornerstone* were:
    1) *Love In The Midnight*
    2) *Never Say Never*
    3) *Why Me*
    4) *Lights*
    5) *Borrowed Time*
    6) *Eddie...*

The rest I could take them or leave them. Though I learned to slightly appreciate
*Boat On The River,* It will never be a
    "go to" song of mine...

  11. D.... B....

    Another cool song

  12. M.... B....

Best song from this album( along with "Boat on the River"), , good rocking guitars, great keyboards , Styx' signature harmonies, superb.

Saw these guys probably 10 times they are great

  14. C.... K....

Awesome tune Really brings me back. I saw the Grand Decathlon Tour of 1979-80. With April Wine at the Checker Dome in St. Louis, Mo.

  17. N.... C....

28 and I love Styx and everything my parents raised me on it

  18. F.... ....

I don't think I've heard this music since then. It's from my brief childhood years in Sacramento.

  19. e.... h....

    Harmony, harmony, harmony...

  20. M.... ....

Tommy F**kin Shaw people!! .....Oh, and JY and Dennis.

  21. L.... W....

And oh yes... EVERYBODY MUST GET STONED!!

  22. L.... W....

Do that and no other shall say nay. For pure Will delivered from the lust of result is in every way perfect.

  23. L.... W....

    Hey Styx Fan... 93!

  24. t.... ....

1979, skating with beautiful babes, going to Six Flags picking up babes for the day, work during the week and party on the weekends. No cares, no worries, health in excellent shape. Cheap prices on everything. Not worrying about what life will be like here in 2018! Now, prices are so high because of greed that we can barely live, been married for 29 years, no more babes, no more skating, health issues, living paycheck to paycheck. Life is different now, but in some ways better. In some ways, not so much. But I am so glad I was born in 1959 and lived through the best decades of music. The music died twice, not once in 1959 when Buddy Holly was killed. It also died in 1989 at the stroke of midnight when we hit 1990. That's when the music died twice.

    t.... ....

There was still plenty of good rock music in the 90's. I think it was more around the early 2000's when it died. But I know what you're saying

  25. D.... ....

I normally prefer Styx's music up until the "Pieces Of Eight" album but this is definitely one of the better songs they've done during the post "Pieces Of Eight" era.

  26. e.... l....

    kickass band and kickass album.

  27. A.... ....

This put a great smile on my face! My brother and I used to rock to 'Cornerstone' back in the day, and we LOVED this song! My album collection was stolen a few years later, so I literally have not heard this song in 35 years!

  28. M.... L....

    very good. underrated song

  29. R.... W....

Im 54 now,, But when i was about 12 or 13 ? I somehow had this on an album. I think it was probably my older sister's. Well anyway, i heard this song Borrowed time, and wow,!! It blew me away.! Well i played it over and over. And then suddenly i started out of nowhere singing right along with it, word for word. And man i was blown away.!! Because you know why.? Cause that's when i realized or that's when i discovered,, that i could sing.. That's when i found out that i had a pretty good talent. So i played it some more.. And i remember that hey,,, i sound as good as the record.. And i remember thinking. If only someone like a producer or a band could hear this, that i could be a rock star. So i kept on singing. And right when i was full of confidence and i was blaring it out loud as i could.. I then heard.. My mother walk in the front door. And that was only after about a few minutes into the song. So i knew she heard everything.. And man at that moment was i embarrassed. Cause she never heard me sing before and infact never did i. Well she never said a word. And never did i. Well i grew up . And when i was 17 i started singing in nieghbor hood band's. And as good as i was.. Guess what..? Nothing. Nothing.. Ever became of me.. And now at the age of 54 im looking back and realising . Hey there's gotta be a lot of singer's out there just like... I was.. That just never got a break.. And that's what it takes to become famous. Is for the right person at the right time to come along at the right moment and discover someone at that right time and give him or her the break. So just go's to show ya.. There's alot of hiddin or unforseen talent out there that hasn't and never will be discovered. Not such a great story. But guess what.? It's true. The end.

  30. L.... P....

    dennis deyoungs voice was phenomenal

    L.... P....

    Still is.

    L.... P....

    Nothings changed

  31. C.... F....

CURRENTLY BLASTING THIS IN A 400 PERSON LECTURE ALL BC FINALS ARE STRESSFUL AND ROCK AND ROLL SOOTHES THE SOUL!!!!!!!!!

  32. D.... W....

Dennis DeYoung could write rock songs, too.

    D.... W....

Babe and Borrowed Time are both on the same album...Cornerstone...HOW COOL IS THAT!!!...Rocker & Ballad!!!

  33. V.... S....

Cornerstone is right up there with Paradise Theatre as Styx's best, Babe or no Babe. Why? Songs like this classic.

    V.... S....

Take some time and listen to Equinox and tell that that isn't their best album.

  34. j.... ....

Man, this is awesome stuff! Don't look now, but here come the Eighties! Thanks again for posting this awesome music!

  35. B.... S....

Dennis DeYoung and Tommy Shaw had their differences, but they did some good collaborations. This song is one of their best.

  36. B.... S....

Had to get the 8-track tape because the album was sold out. To me, this was the best song on the album.

    B.... S....

I agree great 8 track had all of Styx music

  37. B.... S....

like the keyboard intro reminds me of Genesis

  38. M.... S....

    Shockingly topical

  39. R.... B....

I wish Styx had better engineers and producers for their first few big albums. Other albums from that time just SOUND better, and that would have been nice. Styx's guitar tones were always good, but drum compression and e.q., not as good as could be...

    R.... B....

Actually I thought Pieces of Eight and Grand Illusion were better produced sound. You are correct, this was a strong album to say the least, but the sound seemed compromised? they were top of the charts at this time, not sure what happened

    R.... B....

If you listen to other top records from that time (Heart's "Magic Man," Joe Walsh's "Life's Been Good," Eagles' "Hotel California," Fleetwood Mac's "You Make Lovin' Fun,") Styx's albums just don't sound as good. Styx records have less clarity and definition, and they're not as punchy and good-sounding, especially at high volumes. Still, as I said, the compositions and performance were excellent. They were one of my favorite bands growing up! But looking back now, I just wish the sound quality had been better. After the success of "The Grand Illusion," A&M Records certainly had money in Styx's account to shop for a better sound...!

    R.... B....

Styx recording budgets didn't really bump up until after Grand Illusion. Before that, Styx was still considered a popular regional band by A&M looking for better distribution. I remember a radio interview when they were recording out in Oak Lawn and were talking about how Gary Loizzo had updated his equipment at Pumpkin.

The Eagles were already a known national act by 1977 and WEA in LA had top shelf equipment to provide. In the Chicago area back then, only CRC and Universal Recording had comparable multi track facilities, but they were very expensive to rent and would have required the band to commute into the city every day to get their tracks down. By simply "driving over to Gary's" in Oak Lawn saved them time and budget.

This may explain some of the quality disparities you may be picking up in the digital era. Gary would probably say "no way" but he died last year unfortunately.

  40. W.... C....

    Don't look now.....but here comes Planet X Nibiru !!!

  41. c.... ....

"Don't look now, but here come the 80s"... I can still feel how far out and futuristic that seemed at the time in 1979 when I got this album. Meanwhile, fast forward to 2016 and I'm listening to groups like My Morning Jacket, Wilco & Foster the People... new music keeps me young.

    c.... ....

creative+world. Music back in 79 is much better.

    c.... ....

    @Kenneth Futch I agree

    c.... ....

The new bands u listen to stink compared to music of 60s 70s 80s, dont they?

    c.... ....

I listen always to new music. But decent is just too few.
I have a more rewarding experience discovering gems like this one.

  42. S.... S....

Styx was cheesy and good at the same time lol

    S.... S....

Dennis DeYoung cheesy, James Young good.

    S.... S....

Spot on. My thoughts exactly. Styx were still good though.

  43. T.... ....

Love Styx forever and always! Man do I need to see them live in concert before they retire. LOVE STYX!

    T.... ....

+The Criminal Violin Oh hell yes you do, but only if it's the full band. Saw them in Houston in the early 80's. Totally rocked the house!!!

    T.... ....

I'm sure they did! However whether it's the whole original band (minus JC & John), or the current lineup, I want to see them in concert. Even today they are AMAZING in concert. They bring just as much if not more energy into their concerts. Plus, they still sound AMAZING. My main problem with it being the original lineup is Dennis. I cannot STAND that guys showboating. God I hate that. But otherwise it'd be fantastic to go to, especially if it actually was back then haha.

  44. J.... M....

I wish other teens my age could learn to appreciate music like this. Styx makes some good sound.

    J.... M....

    gameroftheyear1000 YES

    J.... M....

I do my dude styx is wicked awesome

    J.... M....

"Wicked Awesome' is a good way of putting it!! Tight songs, melodic at all times, great harmonies and can put the PEDAL TO THE METAL and crank out edgy Rock~

    J.... M....

I'm 47 and I love it when I see kids your age loving the music I grew up on!! And I'm sure so does the members of Styx!!🤘Keep Rockin 🤘

  45. c.... ....

i have tears in my eyes.  Bohemian Rhapsody kind or tears in my eyes.  The guitar feedback in the intro grips my respiratory.  I am very happy to hear this.

    c.... ....

+cevansinz I know that feeling dude! I have grown kids and when I play this kind of music for them they have an awestruck look on their faces like enlightenment has occured.

  46. j.... b....

    TODO FUE UNA ILUCION.

  47. R.... R....

The left says yes and the right says no!

    R.... R....

    Yes! No! Yes! No!
    No! Yes! No!! YES!!

  48. j.... ....

This was my theme song in my Senior year in H.S. in 1980!

  49. D.... E....

    0:01 - 0:44 - 4/4 time
    0:45 - 0:59 - 9/8 time
    0:50 - 1:08 - 10/8 time
    1:09 - 4/4 time until the chorus.
    LOL

    D.... E....

+zenstain Thanks...as to 10/8 vs. 10/4, I really don't know ^_^. It's a ten count, that's for sure. I think the "Borrowed Time" theme and the time signature changes is intentional. They had their prog moments.

    D.... E....

+SweetDjehutyBlueEyes Reminds me of the some of the Kansas" time signatures.

    D.... E....

Styx was arguably the last truly great prog rock bands. IMO better than Rush, more longevity than Yes and more rocking tunes than Pink Floyd.

    D.... E....

I'm not so sure. Rush has kept the same line-up since Rutsey left, and manage t do what the y do with only 3 people.

  50. M.... ....

Excellent tune for sure. ROCK ON!!!!!

  51. L.... C....

Praise Satan for this music !!!

    L.... C....

Don t think the bad guy had anything to do with it. Would say its god given talent. That helped create this great music
Probably my favorite. Overall. Rock group

    L.... C....

Luis Carlos Dávila you sound like a Muppet😠

  52. T.... G....

seems we agree!! Styx  Rules!!  life is  troublesome. sometimes..we can  always go back to our past with  Styx!!memories!! and good times!!

  53. D.... E....

This got no airplay at all that I know of. I had this album on vinyl when I was like 13 right about the time it came out. All these years I remember this song...

    D.... E....

this got sparse play, I remember. The pop hits Babe and Boat on the River got play. this is a very good album ( not great) that is underrated. Pieces of Eight before and Paradise Theater after were both much stronger....

    D.... E....

it did here in san francisco

  54. w.... ....

Aside from "Babe" there wasn't a song this group did that I didn't like. Dennis DeYoung had a voice like nobody else. And those Styx harmonies. Wow. Yes, let's bring back the best of the 80s.

    w.... ....

    You didn't like Babe?

  55. R.... D....

@PAULNIEM If you think that's odd how about, I listen to music from Mozart to Styx to Black Sabbath.

  56. t.... l....

JY help Dennis alot writing his songs. He would Beef them them up

  57. p.... l....

I Love this Album too, I can`t believe this is 32 years old....Still prefer the Styx with Dennis I always felt that when he departed a bit of the magic went also....

  58. j.... ....

This was my theme song when I was a Senior in H.S. DAMN! That was a LONG time ago, but this song still kicks ass!

  59. P.... ....

The opening is great and just builds, and breaks open at 0:50. And I love the sound of the flanged toms from 1:02-1:05.

  60. K.... E....

regina sask ALBERT BRABANT i saw phone come back two regina sask

  61. D.... ....

@CypherInfinity2 I'm surprised that Dennis Deyoung performed a rockin tune cause it's usually JY and Tommy Shaw doing the rockers

  62. s.... ....

I really don't like Styx, but this and Lorelie (sp?) are two of my favorite songs ever. I wish they made more like these!

  63. g.... C....

@titohuertas Ha, played this on my dad's old (well it was old then, older now) RadioShack receiver and turntable. One of the best albums, GREAT song.....

  64. s.... ....

had this tape when it was new and blew out the brand new speakers in the back of the car because i rocked this stuff everytime i played it... wide open!! don't look now but here comes the 80s...wow how time has flown.

  65. C.... R....

one simple minded troll so far.... nice!

  66. D.... R....

They just don't make em like this anymore! Great music for all time.

  67. A.... H....

I listen to this song in a Marantz stereo... at high volume.. The way should be

  68. D.... ....

I thought this song and "Eddie" were the two best songs on the Cornerstone album

  69. W.... C....

"the more I learn, well, the less that I know..." ~Borrowed Time...

  70. M.... ....

@impellernut Either there or Arizona I believe.

  71. J.... R....

What about the intro to The Who's Baba O'Riley?

  72. s.... ....

don't look now, but here comes the 80s!!! i remember...

  73. b.... ....

I went to a concert of theirs recently, and this was the only song they played that I didn't recognize. Now I know, it's one of my favorites from them now.

  74. e.... ....

Must be the best ever intro to a rock song ever ...

  75. 2.... C....

Good sound quality, thanks for posting! I loved the eighties!

  76. e.... ....

@shadow46000 and this albums artwork is one of the most original ideas I´ve ever seen. CD´s are the thing of the present, but vinil recors rule!!!

  77. J.... T....

Esta canción fué la primera que escuche de Styx y me parece excelente, desde hace 29 años soy fan.

  78. s.... ....

I still have this album and the rest of Styx albums on vinyl and they still sound great as when I first played them. Great songs!

  79. 2.... C....

Great sound, and thanks for the memories! :)

  80. L.... L....

Back when this song first came out, a friend of mine put it very succintly:

"I'd absolutely love Styx if they could always be as good as the intto to 'Borrowed Time'". I still think that holds true.

  81. s.... ....

I hate Styx, but love Lorelei and this song - I couldn't remember what the name of this song was - and hadn't heard it in almost 30 years. It's as great as I thought - here come the 80s! LOL!

  82. n.... ....

    2/2/2010 Groundhog Day
This song is more true now than it ever was!
