Style Council, The - Ghosts Of Dachau Lyrics

I close my eyes - I reach out my hand
And there you are - beautiful in scabs
Caressing my scalp - under the mounts of the gun towers
I shout your name - I kick out in dreams
And here we are - the searchlight beams
The siren squeals - and hopeless shuffle to certainty

The crab lice bite - the typhoid smells
And I still here - handsome in rags
A trouserless man - waiting helpless for dignity

Come to me angel, don't go to the showers
Beg, steal or borrow - now there's nothing left to take
Except eternity

And who will come - to flower our graves?
With us still here - covered with dust
Remembered by few but forgotten by the majority

Stay with me angel - don't get lost in history
Don't let all we suffered lose it's meaning in the dark
That we call memory

  1. A.... ....

Can you imagine seeing the terror in your wife's eyes as she is dragged away from your graspe to be gassed to death, knowing you cant do anything to save her, loving her so much that you would happily walk in to the showers instead of her. I cry at the thought

When I stayed in Germany I visited Weimar and Buchenwald, and this song reminds me what I felt and thought. Weimar where the Constitution was enacted in which the most civilized thoughts at the time were included ; Buchenwald where the concentration camp existed in which the most uncivilized tragedy at the time was caused... Only 20 years between the two events, only 5 miles between the two sites. The closeness might be a metaphor that we might find everywhere some kind of civilization has been developed without enough tests of time.

Don't know them personally but read that Steve White was in studio when PW did this. Summat like watched PW late on doing this guitar and him alone....

The B side to 'Speak Like An Angel'. I might still have it somewhere.

    S.... ....

Speak like a angel???? I think you mean Speak like a child, and the B side to that was Party Chambers...

An evocative and heartfelt testament to the evil and brutality that lurks within the souls of Humanity,..... to understand the nature of the beast that is Homo Sapiens is to understand how horrors such as these took place and continue to haunt our World.

  19. v.... ....

    these people suffered enough.
    very sad

  21. N.... B....

Paul Weller has the ability to make me feel every single emotion. A true, true genius.

  22. T.... ....

I thought of this song today when I made an Easter visit to my parents' graves.

"Don't let all we suffered lose its meaning ....."

  23. J.... B....

Recall this tune, way back in my youth, left very deep lasting memories.

  24. B.... D....

    Simply wonderful. Thank you.

  25. l.... ....

The fathers of Billy Joel and Geddy Lee are both Dachau survivors.

  26. w.... ....

The song invokes , I guess,at least in my mind, a Las Vegas lounge sipping expensive wine and not a commemoration to the survivors of the Holocaust.

  27. l.... ....

Well do you know how hard it is to put to words, let alone music and lyrics, that era of history? He did the best he could with what he had seen, felt, and known, and I personally think it's a very haunting piece of music.

  28. w.... ....

My point being, the style and delivery of the song does not match the horrible content of the event. TSC's sound was pure aspartame void of any substance whatsoever.

  29. l.... ....

Paul visited Dachau in the early 80's, where the hell do you think he got this inspiration for this mini masterpiece, twat?

  30. l.... ....

I've learned to never listen to this song while driving, else I'll start having to cover my face a bit to hidde the tears.

  31. I.... M....

Wonderful music and message. Mankind can never forget this atrocity!!!

  32. v.... ....

    Please never forget !
This song, with its lyrics should be learnt at school.

  33. w.... ....

@salvadory Yeah as he sat along the French Riviera sipping cappuccino contemplating how well his new shoes matched his pre-cuffed straight cut pants. Get real man.

  34. s.... ....

@wovokanarchy wow you sure spend lot of time on the style council posts which you claim to hate- this is a great tune and the arrangement makes sense to me- mournful but melodic- !!!! we get it - you love the jam as i do- but i will give credit when i hear some of the great tunes TSC wrote

  35. w.... ....

Once again the lyrics and message is undermined by the delivery of the music and singing. The music doesn't fit well with the topic of the song.

    w.... ....

totally disagree, what do you want, some sort of 'Build me up Buttercup' light hearted ditty or something?
