Sturgill Simpson - Mercury In Retrograde Lyrics
I got a haircut in Norway
When all the weight started pulling me down
Smelling like a waterlogged wet dog
Ain't no way to travel
But as soon as I chopped it all off
I keep tugging on the thread
Hoping it all might come unraveled
I keep trying to throw it all away
But it comes right back around
They come backstage and on my bus
Pretending to be my friend
Shaking hands behind grandstands
All wearing the same old grin
Oh, but none of them bother knocking
Asking me what all my songs mean
Wonderin' if they're all about them
Mercury must be in retrograde again
But at least it's not just hangin' around pretendin' to be my friend
Oh, the road to Hell is paved with cruel intention
If it's not nuclear war, it's gonna be a divine intervention
Living the dream makes a man wanna scream
Light a match and burn it all down
Head back home to the mountain
Far away from the pull
Of all the journalists and sycophants wielding their brands
And all the traveling trophies and award show stands
And all the haters wishing they was in my band
Sorry boys, the bus is plumb full
Mercury must be in retrograde again
But at least it's not just hangin' around pretendin' to be my friend
Oh, the road to Hell is paved with cruel intention
If it's not nuclear war, it's gonna be a divine intervention
And there's nothing for me outside this hotel room
But another letdown, lonely day
Tour is almost over, and I'll be home soon
And it's all been done two or three times anyway
Mercury must be in retrograde again
But at least it's not just hangin' around pretendin' to be my friend
Oh, the road to Hell is paved with cruel intention
If it's not nuclear war, it's gonna be a divine intervention

Sturgill Simpson Mercury In Retrograde Comments
how is this guy headlining for tyler childers... dumb ass music. sorry. Im not impressed.
Seriously? The exquisite Queen like bass line. Funky ass rock and roll at it’s rarest.
Effin' Pure Awesomeness
Listened to in the right frame of mind this basically sounds like a 90's christmas song - the synths especially
This song and album are AMAZING! I've had it on Repeat all day.
Some have compared the riff in "Make Art Not Friends" to The Cars "Good Times Roll".
This song truly has a Cars groove, crossed with Bruce Springsteen. It could easily have come from the Tunnel Of Love album or either of the Cars last two albums. Easily.
Sturgill Simpson=musical genius.🎶🎶🎶
Yeah....that suckers paved pretty damned well.
Reminds me of I want to break free by queen. I wonder if that’s why it’s called “mercury” in retrograde

I love this motherfucker
Found out about sturgill simpson from JRE. Dude makes tough music
Well... there's a whole lot shittier shit out there for sure. I just never would've expected a song from Sturgill that sounds like a mixed drink made with...
The Cars The Eagles
and the Beach Boys. Which isn't all bad, but Sturgill...
If someone ever tells you that you need to grow as an artist...
Run for the hills... FAST!
This Guy's music resonates with your Soul.
Already got my tickets for Independence
This guy I swear is the modern embodiment of Waylon. Fantastically talented man.
Where can I buy this CD?
nuck your self not your family
Korean bull shit who has a gun on you or do we have it on or self
who else can use "sycophants" and "plum full" within a 10 second stretch?
One of the best albums of this young century. Sturgill proves you can be original and good.
362 haters are wishing they were in his band but sorry boys, the bus is plumb full.
Mercury WAS actually in retrograde
Glad it is over...
Listening to this while Mercury is in retrograde today
Plymouth 'Cuda
Coolest album cover ever
100% Excellent!!!
An easy way to tell when an album is great....Every damn song on it is your favorite !!
Who the fuck is Sturgill Simpson?!
Oh, I don't know, just some Grammy winning artist who makes great music.
absolutely love this one
look at the play list employing
lets in peach a president then spend are tax on what we want free from them
This album makes my car go fast.
Not alone at all, it is a miracle I don't have any speeding tickets over the last month.
Hahaha! I’m glad I’m not the only one.
Y’all...I drive a truck and this one’s gonna get me in trouble. 🤷🏼♀️
One of my favorite songs on the album
I love his music wish tickets weren't so pricey!
Sturg has done it again. Love this album.
ear worm alert!!!!!!
I never thought in my whole life I'd enjoy music like this
We're going with either Space Cowboy or Astro Trucker for the genre name right?
Metamodern outlaw countryfunk lol
@3E SHINE Funky Outlaw Country
Can't stop listening to this slbum
This gives me strong Jimmy Buffet vibes. I can dig that.
Best song on the album, hands down.
I know I speak for half of the world when I say we need a part two of sound and fury mr.simpson!!!! Please
Since the album arrived (yes, I still buy cd's), it's been in constant play in the truck, and this is definitely one of my favorite tracks on the album. Anxious to catch Sturgill in concert sometime soon.
Haven't been able to listen to any other album for 3 weeks now.
21st century schizoid man Same. I was wondering if anybody else had gotten trapped in this album like I did! Heh.
And you know what else? I must have listened to In the Court of the Crimson King at least 200 times over the course of the last 40 years. Cheers!
That mushroom cloud is moving, isn't it?
Only Sturgill can do this and make it awesome!
When I first heard this album I was skeptical, but after listening to it a few times I am addicted to it. It is everything that I like about his music from the past with a fresh sound. I hope he keeps on doing his thing.
My favorite song on the album
There is HOPE for rock music.
Like to buy the blue-ray to Sound and Fury.
So I can listen to to the music on Dolby Atmos or HD DTS .
I heard The Dead Don't Die.
The song sounded like old country and western music from the 60's.
I am 62 Have always liked Heavy Metal movie and soundtrack.
In my Eyes, Ears, and Mind.
Sound and Fury is the best.
Brian Wilson is a Genius.
We have a new Genius and his name is Sturgill Simpson.
george hinojosa listen to the band Stoned Jesus - they’re a Ukrainian rock band. Rock is still alive and well
@RmB6one7
Stoned Jesus grate rock music sounded like the 70's.
What I meant to say is rock music is not the norm of today
It's Rap/Hip-Hop,Boy Band, Auto Tune.
I miss album stations (Rock Music).
You get to hear the whole album by two weeks.
Not like top 40 stations you have to wait for the next single release from the artist.
Sound & Fury was # 12 or 13 on the top 200 album on Billboard.
Now it's going down.
Should have been # 1.
Their are artist who want fame, money and awards.
Their are artist that just enjoy making music.
Thank you for turning me on to Stoned Jesus.
It's getting harder all the time to argue that Sturgill isn't a musical genius.
Many of the great musicians are the ones who do exactly what they want with their music. When they make an album and it’s completely new from the last, when they don’t let people define their genre, nor the record labels put them in a box. Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Bon Iver ( to just name a few ) and yes, Sturgill. This album is rocking. Can’t wait to listen to it front to back.
A new air in the microwaves!
What's with the dislikes?
It's cruel intention.
I just imagine strutting down a street, staring in peoples faces, with a F you look but happy
do people think sturgill isn't country anymore? this is oozing with country, it's just got other stuff too
Bruh just oozing with awesome! it trancends genres
bk for president
Song of the century for sure
I can't even tell you how many times I have listened to this song. And the music video that plays in Sound and Fury when it plays is a beautiful representation. Absolutely love everything about this song. The music. The words. The feel of it. It's perfection
IN LOVE. Thank you, Sturgill. I get you, I get all of you.
325 peoples lives are in Mercury Retrograde
I guess if you came into it expecting classic sturgill you could be somewhere between pleasently surprised and disappointed. I'm the former.
Damn, that's nice.
Damn never knew id be jammin to country music lmao
singer is good and maybe tune too without those fc synte
good singer is forced to play this kind of shit
cannot stop listening to this album! he made a pact with the devil or something, cause is fucking addictive..but in a good way.
Hes been to the crossroad for sure.
dis her album is about as near the bullseye as an artist could dream; genesis to z
i cant stop please help
Just found this randomly and man this is awesome! Reminds me when music use to be good. Glad I found the needle in the haystack on YouTube
Spread the word brotha! This guy needs to blow up!
@RedneckWilly C he is pretty damn famous already.
Thank the universe for Sturgill Simpson. This song is FIRE.
I love this song! Literally have played it on repeat nonstop all morning
This guy will not be painted into a corner. I was hesitant at first, but this is growing on me fast.
I dub thee post-country
This song is like Jeff Lynne co-wrote and produced a Bruce Springsteen record.
Except with country roots ..it's insanely good.
It a "DEE-vine-inner-vention"
Well this album is the best thing I have heard in the last 20 years.
Dude. You are so right.
Crazy thing is that this is a soundtrack
@Tarheel Plays no its not. The album was animated after it was done. He did an interview where he went into depth in it and the animation houses that did it. Was multiple studios that put in shorts for it.
Best song on the album.
Sturgill you don’t know me and I don’t really know you
But I beg of you, I have been listening to nothing but this song (and the rest of the album) for days. I have fallen in love with this new genre you’ve created, I’m vibing like no tomorrow.
So I am on my knees begging you to please make more of this stuff, or please tell your friends to, because I love that this is new, but I hate that it’s new because there’s nothing else like it that can vibe alongside this.
This goes for other music creators, hear my plea, make more of this pleasssee
This is good and I like it. Not quite a "new genre", though. Country influence, prominent synthesizer, good songwriting can be found in Tom Petty ("You Got Lucky"), Neil Young (the entire Trans album), and ZZ Top ("TV Dinners"). Being compared to those 3 excellent artists is impressive.
LOVE YOU STURGILL 💚❤️💚🇧🇷
I was going to comment but i forgot what i was going to say but im going listwn to more sturgill keep on pumping out music for my listening pleasure
This song gives me tingling up my neck. I think my nervous system likes it
I am black and was raised on 50s, 60s 70s Pop, Rock, Soul and Country. I.was not a Sturgill fan until Netflix, so I was unaware of all the Nashville drama and angst over his 'style' and 'category'. My opinion, his 'category' is: GREAT MUSIC and SONGWRITING. PERIOD. I hope that helps. P.S., It somehow darkly reassuring that the country media scene is just as F*cked UP as pop rock soul and hip hop are. Corporate friggin America. gotta love it. (not really)
All great music transcends genre!
BAD ASS TUNE. STURGILL IS NEW TO ME...BUT THIS IS OVER THE TOP... BAD ASS.
Great song. Hopefully mercury was not retrograde when he released this song...
My first time and I'm rather impressed. Great recommendation, YT.
Found Sturgill because of "Turtles All The Way Down", I was immediately intrigued, amazing song. This song is badass too, love having an artist like you around! - @4igging4eeper4aily
Some say " time flies " win your having fun.....
Don't like it. I can't relate to how hard the fame and fortune has been for you son. Good luck but I'm not a fan of this garbage
Todd Bearden fuck you then bitch
I can't believe how awful this sounds to me, no hater of course but ....nah, I am absolutely... not able to get into this. mebbe its just THIS track I'll check out this one called Best Clockmaker somethin.
The end of Far Cry 5
Kinda like Steve Miller bequeathed Space Cowboy to Sturgill.
I can see that, kinda weird and not really popular.
I think this song means that, people want to be Sturgills friends but only to get something from him, Mercury in retrograde can affect people and make them confused, so the people coming onto his bus without knocking are confused, but not really. Its like Sturgill is making it sound like mercury is in retrograde is an excuse for them to like him
If ZZ Top & The Cars band didnt have influence on this song.Or maybe thats just my take😎-Joseph
Thanks Sturgill for more recent tracks brother
Detour off the marked roads to cut a sonic trail.
This song is sure is growing on me! First time I heard it was on shooter Jennings electric rodeo.
Keep up the good work mr Simpson
Love Sturgill, but this album just ain’t for me.
The important thing is that you tried.
I just discovered it and cant comprehend any good reason why someone would dislike it but then i tend to love music rather deeply and in some respects unconditionally
The Death Twitch I respect that. It’s just not at all what I expected it was gonna be. He did his thing though
I woke up this morning with this song in my head from the satellite Outlaw Country DJs playing it. I just listened to the album. Best rock album I've heard in a long, long time. Amazing!
Strip away all the strings and analog synths and trippy production, and the song itself is very much the same kind of country/blues roots rock stuff he’s already known for. Ok, are you done? Now put all that stuff back, because it’s awesome. So is the song. So is the album. So is the film. The whole thing is an unmatched alchemical marriage of media, the likes of which we will not likely see again in our lifetimes.
Enjoy it while you can
(and say hi to the boys in the band)
‘cause it’s all over now
just a flash in the pan
Take that trig!
