Streisand, Barbra - How Are Things In Glocca Morra? / Heather On The Hill Lyrics

I hear a bird
Londonderry bird
It well may be he's bringing me a cheering word
I hear a breeze
A river Shannon breeze
It well may be it's followed me across the seas
Then tell me please

How are things in Glocca Morra?
Is that little brook still leaping there?
Does it still run down to Donny Cove
Through Killybegs, Kilkerry and Kildare?
How are things in Glocca Morra?
Is that willow tree still weeping there?
Does that laddie with the twinklin' eye
Come whistling by?
And does he walk away
Sad and dreamy there
Not to see me there?

So I ask each weeping willow
And each brook along the way
And each lad that comes a whistling
'Toora-lay'
How are things in Glocca Morra
This fine day?

The mist of May is in the gloamin'
And all the clouds are holdin' still
So take my hand and let's go roamin'
Through the heather on the hill

The mornin' dew is blinking yonder
There's lazy music in the rill
And all I want to do is wander
Through the heather on the hill

There may be other days as rich and rare
There may be other springs as full and fair
But they won't be the same, they'll come and go
But this I must know

How are things in Glocca Morra?
Is that laddie calling 'toora-lay'?
Will we meet in Glocca Morra
Some fine day? Some fine day

Streisand, Barbra How Are Things In Glocca Morra? / Heather On The Hill Comments
  1. c.... k....

    My favorite lady soloist!

  2. M.... M....

Superb is such a puny adjective to describe this medley and Barbra's voice...phenomenal might be better..

  3. F.... O....

Im a big Streisand fan but this nasal sound is all wrong for this song . Best left in the vault

  4. V.... P....

If only she had sung more songs like this. She would have had a recorded legacy like Ella and Frank. But then she would not have had her Malibu estate.

  5. N.... D....

    Wow this is fantastic..

  6. R.... ....

She songs this well, but she NEEDS the accent, and it ain't there. You can't sing this as if you're doing "Funny Girl."

  7. J.... M....

What a beautiful rendition of a romantic, reminiscent song about Glocca Morra. Thank you for the post! 😊

  8. j.... h....

Many seem to be ignoring that this is just one continuous take. Streisand has always had her own style, and really never conformed. Such a gift that voice is, but my trouble listening to this are the off "edges" in her pitch. I expect a different interpretation of music when hearing her work, and have come to look forward to it. Ability and performance don't always meet up when singing.
My mother used to point out that she is really a song stylist, rather than a singer, and I think that holds true to this day.

  9. R.... L....

she kind of screams this song, as if she must do it her way, to astound and impress. well, maybe for most of you, but, lovely song, like it better sung with real feeling, you know?

  10. J.... M....

Just did the Pepsi challenge between Pet Clark and Barbara Streisand,  both singing their beautiful renditions of this fine song.  Pet wins the prize....it's her accent ya see,  Barbara's range is clearly unmatched by most, but when it comes to this Irish music, Pet brings the tears to yer eyes every time.  Erin go bragh!

  11. M.... R....

Barbra sings this with such elegance, again making it her song as she does so often her voice is precious.

  12. A.... A....

    Una obra maestra vocal !!!!

  13. D.... W....

How sad she got political, she had such a remarkable talent....but then she exceeded

    D.... W....

Doesn't matter. You don't have the same voice as you get older. And if you think "The Way We Were" wasn't political, you've got your head up your

  14. G.... s....

I'm not much of a Streisand fan -- her singing is much too mannered. Here she does a pretty good job.

  15. C.... T....

Absolutely stunning, what a Artist and performer all her songs are beautiful and that voice is pure Gold. 👍😌

    C.... T....

    Dipped in butter :)

  16. n.... ....

What a beautiful medley. Thanks for this post. Don't ever take it away.

  17. W.... U....

Thank you, Nouran, for giving us the opportunity to listen to this beautiful track reading the lyrics in the same time. It is precious for non English speaking people. I shared your video on our Facebook page this morning. http://www.whatsupdoc.fr, site français et pages dédiés à/French website and pages dedicated to/ Barbra Streisand.

  18. c.... I....

    Great singing lalalalallalallalalalalalalallalalalal

    c.... I....

You're so sweet and cute 🐨🐨🐨🐨

  19. R.... L....

Any Irishman knows It is DERRY not LondonDerry... How disgraceful.

  20. F.... A....

Barbara 's voice look SO much like Céline Dion's !

    F.... A....

Noena Burnell i think english accent is lovely

    F.... A....

Farah Angely that is very nice of you, but there are so very many accents and dialects here. I live in the north east. We have a very different accent to the typical English accent. Where are you from?

    F.... A....

Noena Burnell in France ? Lyon

    F.... A....

Noena Burnell And i'm originaire from Guadeloupe it's a little Island in the tropics And it is funny because when you look at it from the hubblot you see that it have got a butterfly forme

    F.... A....

Farah Angely oh you aren't too far away. Sounds lovely. I will Google earth Guadeloupe. It also sounds beautiful

  21. Q.... K....

Petula Clark's Version Sung In "Finian's Rainbow" is The Best Bar None.

    Q.... K....

I so totally agree! and I love Barbra's voice.
All should watch the film, and understand.

  22. T.... ....

The towns are Killibegs, County Donegal and Kilcarry, County Carlow, Ireland. Easily misheard I suppose.

  23. F.... K....

    Bizarre, sublime, and under-noted!

  24. J.... D....

    So beautiful!

  25. m.... ....

Streisand in this interpretation of How are things in Glocca Morra?/Heather on the Hill makes a human being proud to be as such.

  26. r.... ....

I am Irish born and bred and a huge fan of Barbra but she destroys this song

    r.... ....

+rovertnitram123 It must be sung with an Irish brogue

    r.... ....

Get over it! It's Barbra and it's terrific! Go and shove some boxty (Irish potato pancake for those of you that don't know) up your ass!

  27. C.... N....

Also, it's not "to relay" it is the Irish expression "Toora lay."

    C.... N....

+Chris N Yeah, that bugged me. Barbra woulda slapped somebody!

    C.... N....

    That's funny!

    C.... N....

She sings "Toora lay"  - not "to relay"

    C.... N....

And it's not "It, well, maybe..." it's "It well may be..."
It well may be the person who transcribed the lyrics doesn't understand English.

    C.... N....

    @Tipi Dan
    Thanks for the correction.
    That mistake bugs me.

  28. s.... ....

SPELLING;  DONEGAL, KILLYBEGS KILKERRY Kildare, and then some more still later on

    s.... ....

great upload,  rill=when rain seeks lowest point and flows in a smallll stream, we might say gully

  29. G.... J....

Two songs that I love sung superbly. How I wish that Streisand had made more movie musicals.

  30. M.... ....

    Magnificent.

  31. p.... h....

    killy begs

  32. G.... V....

My father who passed away 3 years ago (at 85) loved to listen to this album many, many years ago while he was refinishing his basement back some 50 years ago.  I although a child also remember this music.  He also loved Barbra Streisand so this one is for you DAD!!!!  Love Gail

    G.... V....

    the unreleased album?

  33. n.... ....

Does anyone who likes Ms. Streisand believe how incredible this vocal track is?  What else is in her vaults?  The arrangement, the magnificent range of her voice - everything is perfect.  Thanks for this post.

  34. E.... F....

I adore her version, what a voice!!!!

  35. s.... ....

Enchanted.........Can she sing? Thank you for uploading

  36. M.... ....

listen to Jane Oliver sing this if you want to hear how it should be sung! I luv Babs but shoulda left this one alone

  37. M.... W....

Pure nostalgia! Couple of typos: 'in the rill (not rain) - 'fair' (not 'fare'). Cheers!

  38. c.... j....

After listening to Maureen Hegerty, Julie Andrews, and Pet Clark sing this song, well all Streisand does is ruin it with her LOUD affected rendition.

    c.... j....

@Sam Wharton For a person like that the only response is to look away embarrassed; it's like a sociopath asking you to explain compassion.

    c.... j....

@pink highway He's tone deaf obviously!!!

    c.... j....

capt john don't be so quick so show your musical ignorance. It shows here very strongly...or is it your political prefrences that guided your stupidity? No matter, you are clearly, musically very ignorant!

    c.... j....

Naah, I agree. It's an excellent rendition but a bit too syrupy and affected for my taste -- Julie Andrews' rendition is clear, crisp and limpid. Pet Clark did a great job but that awful cheesy choir behind her ruins it for me.

    c.... j....

capt john I actually liked anne okeefe singing this song at Wakefield west riding

  39. L.... M....

"There's lazy music in the rill."

  40. W.... L....

Preserve this interpretation in a time capsule in space forever as a vocal masterpiece . Singing students worldwide take note of this master class !!!! Absolutely stunning and no wonder she is deemed the superstar that all singers and stars look up to.

  41. R.... I....

One of the best versions I've heard from her. Absolutely love it.

  42. v.... l....

    Stupendous vocal.

  43. h.... ....

The writer of this song ...also wrote Over the Rainbow

    h.... ....

E.Y. Harburg did write the lyrics of both, yes, you're 1/2-right.. The music is NOT by the same two guys. Grrr! Burton Lane wrote this one and Harold Arlen wrote "Rainbow." Thanks. - There is a WORLD of difference.

    h.... ....

    hoborock007 I didn't know that...cheers! What a talent.

  44. J.... S....

    Wonderful!

  45. N.... T....

can someone tell in what key Streisand sings this tune?

    N.... T....

It begins in D-flat major. It's such a standard that you could probably find it in almost any key.

    N.... T....

Thank you so much for responding Andy

    N.... T....

I wish I knew more about music, I just like it or not, and that's it, and I adore this song as she sings it.

  46. M.... D....

    pure beauty of pure genius

  47. J.... A....

had this on a Blue Note CD. i get teary eyed each time i hear this song. very nice...

  48. R.... D....

Oh jeez. I would of read your comment in full but the caps lock gave me a migrane. Stupid man.

  49. f.... ....

She's not a Jewish girl when she sings. She is simply the song.

  50. d.... ....

She isn't singin 'to relay' but '... each lad that comes a-whistlin' Tooralay'. This is a common word in Irish folk songs. The song is from the 1940s Broadway musical 'Finian's Rainbow'. It was made into a movie in the 1960s with Fred Astaire and Petula Clark.

  51. e.... w....

Her tone quality, bloom, vibrato on "rill" is sublime.

  52. r.... ....

    Fantastik great song great singer

  53. B.... E....

The art work for the album is inspired

  54. B.... E....

The place names in the song are Anglicised versions of the Irish names, which the British changed when governing Ireland. Cill in Irish is a church, this became Kill or Kil in many place names,. Killybegs in the 'the small churches', Kilkenny, which I mistyped below is the Church of St. Caonaigh. Kildare is Cill Dara or 'the Church of the Oak', just thought people out there might like to know..

  55. B.... E....

this is supreme example of Barbra making a song her own... or medley of songs

  56. B.... E....

''there's lazy music in the rill' a rill is small stream

  57. B.... E....

also its.... 'tooralay' it is the tune the lad is whistling ... it is not a word or words....

  58. B.... E....

It is Killybegs, Kilkerry... and she sings it very clearly.... Killybegs is a town in Donegal. Kilkerry does not exist but maybe sounded more musical than Kilkeeny.... it would be Donny Cove too... a place. Thanks for posting.. it is beautiful....

  59. P.... B....

    won-der-ful !
