Streisand, Barbra - Here's To Life Lyrics

No complaints and no regrets
I still believe in chasing dreams and placing bets
And I have learned that all you give is all you get
So give it all you've got

I had my share, I drank my fill
And even though I'm satisfied, I'm hungry still
To see what's down another road, beyond a hill
And do it all again

So here's to life
And every joy it brings
Here's to life
To dreamers and their dreams

Funny how the time just flies
How love can go from warm hellos to sad goodbyes
And leave you with the memories you've memorized
To keep your winters warm

But there's no yes in yesterday
And who knows what tomorrow brings, or takes away
As long as I'm still in the game, I want to play
For laughs, for life, for love

So here's to life
And every joy it brings
Here's to life
To dreamers and their dreams
May all your storms be weathered
And all that's good get better

Here's to life
Here's to love
And here's to you

Sadly the music is uninspiring, may well have been performed well, but that sort of club lounge piano lift music even when sung by a successful vocalist doesn't do much for me. We were also starting to see a decline in vocalization. The last one with Gibbsy brought out the best in BS, but here at 67 she may well have started on a downward shift from the plateau she'd been on for a long time. It's a shame but is to be expected. May be credit to her she lasted this long.

Some artists like Whitney Houston went into decline very suddenly at an early age. She was a great vocalist but things took their toll on her. Had there been better music on this album she may have performed a bit better, rose to the occasion as she had many times in the past and got away with it rather than getting away with it enticing folks in to the nostalgia of it all.

I first saw Streisand when she was 19on the Ed Sullivan show, I immediately fell in love with her. Had never heard of her, found her so unusual, captivating, incredibly young but then the voice—when she started singing happy days are here again, her range , was nothing like I’ve never heard before , maybe Garland, but have had a love affair with Streisand ever since. New York didn’t take to her right away, but with her determination and sheer “god given talent” she remains one of the most prolific , astounding , profound singers of my generation up to 2020 —-who the hell has longevity like that —yes Ella Fitzgerald, Sinatra, garland maybe just a handful more —but no more than that—-the years of listening to Streisand has enriched my appreciation for some of the greatest songs ever written , the way we were, comes to mind ,we are talking years here , of a woman who was touched by the gods with a god given voice that has endured to this very day.....thank you miss Streisand for the countless hours of listening to you sing and your voice takes me to another world filled with nothing but beauty, dazzling talent , there will be no one else like her—-never.

Please one last word, “here’s to life “is about a life unfulfilled, loss of a love that could have been, but let’s raise a glass of champagne to salute life even though “our” dreams didn’t all come true —sadly, but despite a live that’s been lived , among its disappointments , and some triumphs we still remain on the road of life.

This song is so soothing and the Joe Williams version is just as good !

Have you heard Shirley Horne? Give her a try.

    t.... m....

Knowing about the singer here kind of ruins the song (which belongs to Shirley Horn!) -- we understand they spent more time on preparing for her covers than all the time spent on the songs for her albums, she was so narcissistic!  Well, she DID need a lot of help with her looks, so maybe we can forgive her there.
