Stranglers, The - Toiler On The Sea Lyrics
I had a woman ship
I took her overseas
She left her hull unlocked
I had to find a dock
I was a toiler on the sea
I was a toiler on the sea
I was a toiler on the sea
We didn't use cruel words
To navigate cruel seas
The wind was biting hard
At times I had to scream
I was a toiler on the sea
I was a toiler on the sea
I was a toiler on the sea
And when we reached the land
We went aground on the rocks
Became a wreck in the sand
Became a home for a flock
We ventured overland
Fought with the aliens
The young ones used their hands
Pointed the way to a flock
A flock of seagulls!
A flock of seagulls!
Then we retraced our steps
Rebuilt the woman ship
I took her back up north
I lost her in the fog
I was a toiler on the sea
I was a toiler on the sea
I was a toiler on the sea
I was a toiler on the sea
I was a toiler
I was a toiler
I was a toiler
On the sea
On the sea
I was a toiler
I was a toiler
On the sea
I was a toiler
A toiler
A toiler

Stranglers, The Toiler On The Sea Comments
god damn this music lights me up! this one is so near best. i shromed to the live album version back in the late 80's and was complete . i got lucky meeting a london visiter in 1977 who told me to drop ''rocky horror'' for ''ratious'' lp . gave me the vinyl. this song is one of the ones !''flock of seagulls ''
Toiler On The Sea is my favourite song on The Stranglers Black And White album
This is my hyper song
Where A Flock of Seagulls got their name: https://youtu.be/flUxmdlhiHY?t=211
fantastic band, popular but should have been much bigger than they were/are given the quality of the songs, great range of songs, much better than all the other punk/new wave groups !
DO YOU HEAR ANYWAY BEST !
One of the best fan videos for one of the best songs ever
3.00am winter of 2019..Still Fookin Amazing
28 people by strangling
Somewhat punk, somewhat prog......all good!
Edinburgh playhouse 1980 81, 82 🎸🍻
Met the band too..
Some friends and I around 1980 were walking along a river towpath with this song playing on a quite big tape recorder and we came across a body floating in the river, this song is eternally linked to that moment for me, not in a bad way although it made an impact on us all that day. Found out later he was a suicide RIP Keiron
I think Black and White is probably my favourite Stranglers album - so many great tracks :)
:D Krisse&Markku :D
"I had a toilet,with no seat. ..."
What other band could play an intro like that ? . Superb.
Great song and I love the visuals.
A moment in time...........but my god what a moment!!!!! Unbelievable track with complex melodies from the best band ever!
The Best!!! The Ravens at the end is a great touch!
You might want to know that the Vikings visited Morocco, Spain, Italy, and even Persia back in the day, with the usual results. The band researched this song very well.
my fave rave intro to any song------ever, and has been for decades.
The stranglers dose wat it says on the tin brill
The Intro of this Tune is terrific.
It's sounds like Shadows
I was 13, what did I know. 40 years later I realise this song saved my life living 30 years abroad I never knew. Viracocha.
Not a single, yet still a contender for best ever Stranglers track.
Great collective playing.

I was a toilet on the ship
Toilet On Sea - quite a few coastal towns now that would be appropriate for....
Progpunk
Scissor People Ty Segall and White Fence
pick the bass out of that its mental!!, i heard them play this on soundcheck in folkestone in the afternoon before that evenings gig there , even with Baz Warne on vocals it made you shiver to hear it , thumbs up
Wish they could have done another black and white album like black and white I also wish fleetwood Mac did another rumours , depeche mode another violator and wall of voodoo another call of the west alas no
Music died long ago, at least it's memorialized here.
what an intro...
All I hear is 'was a toilet on the seat'
I used to buy their vynils which were coming from ex Yugoslavia, such a great band, I like also this spagetti western introduction to this song, thank you so much Dave, Hugh, Jet and Jean-Jacques
That bass sound ... it's perfect., cuts right through.
Yup, that's me!
A Flock of seagulls,a Flock of seagulls
So much going on in that track what a track
I misheard it as: I ate a woman shit. I was a toilet on the sea
the best band in the world bar none
@Ray Enbow Have to agree with you about John Ellis not the right choice at all...Haha no you're never too old to listen to The Stranglers!!
I've seen the stranglers live around 30 times since hugh left.....and they are still the best live band I've ever seen.
@paul nesbitt They WERE the best. Since Hugh left a mere shadow of how they used to be. Very depressing to see what they have become. I walked out half way through their set last time I saw them, and I was on the guest list, didn't pay to get in, still felt ripped off after I left. Depressing!
@Ray Enbow it's sad to hear you felt that way ray.....I was devastated when hugh left myself....but since the changes the stranglers have under gone .....with baz now taken over for me they are back to their superb best but ray as they say ....everyone is entitled to there own opinion.
@Ray Enbow dick
come back all of you please and reform for a true stranglers concert
Good luck with that....
true enough..... the robots are coming !!
Timeless song, one of the best group of all times.
Long live to the stranglers, they keep the flame!!!!
Fuck. It's such a shame, but Jet Black frigged up the drums on most of this album. Yet Sleazy and Threatened proved he had more than BOOM BOOM BAH to hos repertoire. I blame the drink and drugs he was on. And that he was the laziest drummer on planet earth.
It's probably their best, but at least greater consensus evolves around the idea of it being their sharpest. The whole friggin album cuts like a samurai sabre, with a flamethrower bass and lyrics that cauterize in ice. In the weeks prior to its release, national fm radio kept playing this song, especially on the afternoon and night rockwise shows. Until I read it printed, I wondered what Cornwall meant with a "toilet on the sea"...
best band ever bar none
Where is the complete album, with free single?
the live track is worth good shrooms cook ! so is this!
Incredibly creative and subversive track by one of the best purveyors of the original punk rock. Freaking beautiful madness!
OUT OF THIS WORLD ! THE BEST ! CHARLIE KENT....................
A Flock of Seagulls
Never heard this track before, but always thought the bass had a nice toilety sound!

A flock of seaguls
Absolutely fantastic song. Great job putting this video together, too.
One of the greatest intros ever
Brilliant
Great 80's song. In order to do it any justice, you need better live action tank footage on a test range. No, nobody wants to see anybody getting blown to bits.
In the waves of light we are coming
Brings back memories of going to see them way back 😃
best intro in rock n roll

Mike Score named his band A Flock of Seagulls after listening to this.
Ha! It's true.
Really?
@Hugh Jarce Take to the seas, explore the world and find out for yourself.
@EuphoniaPooch Really?
I always wondered about that.
Just brilliant
yer not wrong.
Fuck the vikings, bunch of stinky jews with dirty blonde hair. Thanks for the upload though! Hehe
I had a woman ship, I took her overseas... I was a toiler on the sea. An amazing song, so unique and original. Nice to have lived in times like the late 70's when music mattered.
great times great band
Yes, I can relate to that. In 1976 I was disillusioned with the poor state of rock music. I was only 18 and already wishing rock music could regain some of its anger and energy. A year later, I got my wish.
Great band. One of my favorited.
It reminds me of DH Lawrence
I like the flying foxes at 2:56
The Stranglers are amazing. I would only compare their artistic merit with Genesis, YES, King Crimson, Tom Waits, Husker Du, and a few select others... I owe my own distance of rank and individuality to bands like this. I'm currently training to be a radio DJ to help influence other individuals the way I was influenced...
Lol a prog fan
jesus just enjoy for fuck sake boogie boogie
Prog DJ! What a tit!
How dare you put The Strangers in such wank company!

"I was a toilet that could pee."
@***** And the band "A Flock of Seagulls" was taken from that line in this song.
LOL ... excellent !
??toilet on the see
I play this in the car and my 4 year old sings along too... half way thru he always yells out.. mum you know this is not about a toilet... Bless him... :-)
You have a very lucky four year old. Kudos!
My mum was so tolerant of the music I would listen to when I was a teenager, One time she turned around and enquired, "Was he saying, "I was a Toilet on the Street"?. lol
Fantastic track ... one of their very best, and that's saying a lot!
Love this, but Death and Night and Blood is freaking epic... Cheers!
@gel6988 : Did you see Raveninblack 1's vid for that tune?
I used to sing "Toilet Without A Seat"..
You had a woman shit?
I took her over shit
My mum was so tolerant of the music I would listen to when I was a teenager, One time she turned around and enquired, "Was he saying, "I was a Toilet on the Street". lol
One of their BEST!
Love it. Good work.
A friend's train journey was delayed today so I was humming " I'm on the toilet... on the seat...I'm on the toilet... on the seat...then we came to a flock... a flock of sheep" (3:35)
now that...is funny
One of my favorite songs!
Mine too
a great group
