Met the band too..

Some friends and I around 1980 were walking along a river towpath with this song playing on a quite big tape recorder and we came across a body floating in the river, this song is eternally linked to that moment for me, not in a bad way although it made an impact on us all that day. Found out later he was a suicide RIP Keiron

I've seen the stranglers live around 30 times since hugh left.....and they are still the best live band I've ever seen.

@paul nesbitt They WERE the best. Since Hugh left a mere shadow of how they used to be. Very depressing to see what they have become. I walked out half way through their set last time I saw them, and I was on the guest list, didn't pay to get in, still felt ripped off after I left. Depressing!

@Ray Enbow it's sad to hear you felt that way ray.....I was devastated when hugh left myself....but since the changes the stranglers have under gone .....with baz now taken over for me they are back to their superb best but ray as they say ....everyone is entitled to there own opinion.

Fuck. It's such a shame, but Jet Black frigged up the drums on most of this album. Yet Sleazy and Threatened proved he had more than BOOM BOOM BAH to hos repertoire. I blame the drink and drugs he was on. And that he was the laziest drummer on planet earth.

It's probably their best, but at least greater consensus evolves around the idea of it being their sharpest. The whole friggin album cuts like a samurai sabre, with a flamethrower bass and lyrics that cauterize in ice. In the weeks prior to its release, national fm radio kept playing this song, especially on the afternoon and night rockwise shows. Until I read it printed, I wondered what Cornwall meant with a "toilet on the sea"...

Yes, I can relate to that. In 1976 I was disillusioned with the poor state of rock music. I was only 18 and already wishing rock music could regain some of its anger and energy. A year later,  I got my wish.

The Stranglers are amazing. I would only compare their artistic merit with Genesis, YES, King Crimson, Tom Waits, Husker Du, and a few select others...
