Stranglers, The - Laughing Lyrics

You could have wasted yourself in a plane in the air
But lead poisoning from your daddy to me just didn't seem fair
Committing the crime of taking your time
You're laughing we're carving
Your name in a tree for the kids to see
We hear ya, we fear your ecstasy
You paid the penalty
You could have wasted away on the floor of a hotel room
With the hand of a working girl to lead you into your tomb
Committing the crime of taking your time
You're laughing we're carving
Your name in a tree for the kids to see
We hear ya, we fear your ecstasy
You paid the penalty
You could have hung your hat on a pretender's lust for fame
But you refused to lay it down
It took your old man to live in shame
For committing the crime of taking your time
You're laughing we're carving
Your name in a tree for the kids to see
We hear ya, we fear your ecstasy
You paid the penalty

  2. shaun smith

I think some fans have taken against this album cos some remixes were done to make it more commercial. Also, it's a very Hugh album - not very JJ!

  3. shaun smith

    Elaine Gill

To Lord Fauntleroy, 3 years later, What IS this song about? - J.YO'

    TheMrMojoRisin67

I haven't found much on it, but rumors say that it's about Marvin Gaye.

    Wyngardian

It is. Hugh explains it in his book "Song By Song" The last verse nearly caused them a bit of trouble though, as it has a sly dig at Paul Young (who their producer Laurie Latham was also working with at the time) and his cheesy Marvin covers.

    TheMrMojoRisin67

    TheMrMojoRisin67

    M. B-EE

@TheMrMojoRisin67 Marvin Gaye was shot dead by his father.

  16. Lord fauntleroy

Should"ve been the follow up to skin deep but instead they released the miserable"No mercy"instead wrong singles choices blighted this bands success Imagine they picked "Let me introduce u to the family"as the 1st single taken from the La folie album..Eh hello?? was it not blatantly obvious that golden brown was a classic??Then they followed that up with a french song"La folie"Blue sister from "Feline should"ve been a single to instead of Midnight summer dream/paradise
