Stranglers, The - Everybody Loves You When You're Dead Lyrics
They crucify you when you get it wrong
When things are fine they put you ahead
They laugh at you with your trousers down
They pick the stones and aim them at your head
When you're alive they won't care what you said
It doesn't matter what you try to hide
The sun comes out and then the truth is read
Your fans'll love you when you're alive
But the wreaths are laid by the rest instead
When you're alive they won't care what you said
What you deserve and all the blood you bled
'Cos everybody loves you when you're dead
Kneel and pray by the side of your bed
And everybody loves you when you're dead
Kneel and pray just like your momma said
What you deserve and all the blood you bled
You'll turn in your grave at what's gonna be said
You'll finally be appreciated
'Cos everybody loves you when you're dead
'Cos everybody loves you when you're dead

c'te bonne blague
Miss Sulli when listen this song
Stupendously cynical honesty. Oxygen for the soul. I come back here whenever I think I can't breathe.
Hands down, alongside The Raven and Men in Black the best Stranglers album imho.
so cool to sing a theme like this, ain't it fun ?
Great tune the stranglers jj..
You know what I hear when I play this,, Sid barret,, if ya know what I mean. Deadly bass as usual from JJ.
Ha ha the brilliant Stone Roses ripped off the guitar for Made of Stone as they did with the verse tune for Tramp.
''La Folie'' is my favorite The Stranglers album , absolutely great ironic song ,thanks for this upload ...
I don't know how one settles on a favourite Stranglers album. If you'd asked me 2 months ago, I'd have PROBABLY plumped for The Raven, right now it's La Folie that's getting played. Maybe in another 30 years time - when I finally get it! - I'll realise that Gospel according to the men in black was their masterpiece, all along....or is that Black and white?!
@MisAnnThorpe Agreed! My 'favourite' Stranglers album varies right through the spectrum. At the moment I'm enjoying Dreamtime. Next week it'll be Rattus. Impossible for me to pick a favourite as they are all so damned good, and appeal according to what your mental state is at the time...
Laughed at me with my trousers down...
...it wasn't a happy
sight...
So true Story
The Stranglers luckily are all still alive :-)
Tim Kennedy hang in there, Jet.
and this is a message to all trying to hang your balls on a string !!
as it comes out everybody dies some day in some way, this is great insight and everyone should pay attention to the message.
rocksssss
dio can
This is about John Lennon, I'm guessing.
no its about people fighting over their inheritance
Ironic!
hay la amo esa canción
Always think of this song when someone famous dies and the "Legend" monicker is rolled out again for someone who quite frankly was average in life and most people did not give a crap about them when they where alive. Very insightful Lyric by Hugh.
My funeral song
+tanpiltanpil .....how will you know?
Me too.
*tanpiltanpil* What's the date? I'll try and make it.
bass......the blood you bled...
this is whats being played at my funeral
That's great. It shouldn't have to be that way, though.
I am 13 and yet I like this song its amazing

I think I might have this played at my funeral in the 'quiet thoughts moment'. And have Metal Machine Music at the end.
tanpiltanpil mine too, followed by “heroes” and “little old wine drinker me” at communion
That's years away, hopefully. Stay well and be happy....
Me too :D
La Folie is probably my favorite Stranglers albums, followed by Men in Black. This record seems to have a good flow to it from begin to end(with great songs), and I always loved this beautiful, cool album cover as well!
The Stranglers got caught up with the whole Punk thing by default. JJ admits he was a Punk, but as for Dave, Hugh and Jet, then went along for the ride. As Hugh once said, we just jumped on this rocket which was head for the moon! The Stranglers have remained because they can play and play well, write good music/songs and are talented. These are the key ingredients. Other bands come and go. PIL comes and goes....but the Stranglers have never stopped.
Punk is a culture of attitude not a set of certain musical arrangements. To debate whether this 'sounds' like punk is missing the point, the question do the creators have a punk philosophy of independence and creative control or are they directed and manufactured by market forces?
@cordedpoodle -I agreed 100% with you,and i also like the Damned and Captain sensible-Does where the good old days.
@pedrofaba Funny how that "Punk" label is so slippery. Yeah their early stuff is more punk, but not in the way kids think of punk now, and their middle stuff is criticized for being "too pop" when it was mostly really great music. Same with the Damned and Captain Sensible, another favorite of mine.
@TheBleech Probably because you don't understand the disease. I know 99% of DOCTORS think its a disease, but people with no training and no experience with it have strong counter opinions. Rather I have no sympathy for people with ordinary talents who gain extraordinary fame over extraordinary musicians like the Stranglers who are still somewhat obscure.
@WAWELDRAGON I was a fan from the start. This was not my favorite album until recently. Now it is my favorite. Listen to the Timbre and Counterpoint. This Album is really more of a sound SCULPTURE than Aural Sculpture. Stripped down and to the point.
@themScreamS ....You read my mind... all those creeps saying how great she was when they abandoned her. ...and you can bet your life Kevin 'Water World' Costner will resurrect his movie career on the back of his eulogy the other day... They should have had Hugh Cornwell up there, telling it how it is! :-)
@WAWELDRAGON You're right about them all except Feline. I think it is amongst their best work. My favourite will always be The Raven though.
Its a well wierd album as was Meninblack, my verdict is that Rattus was epic and haunting, Raven was clever and majestic, Black and White and Heroes were aggressive and melodic (especially Heroes) Feline was an embarrassment except a couple of tracks, Aural Sculpture listenable but the continuation of the downward trajectory that began with Feline.
WAWELDRAGON Exactly my thoughts !! Rattus was the classic. The live album " Live Excert " was good too but it started to fall apart for me after Raven...
Wonder if they`ll play this song and dedicate to Amy on tour???? Should do? Esp,after the bands experiences with hard drugs, and JJ`s anti-drugs stance nowadays!!!
@themaninblack1874 No simpathy for folk with millions to spend, who self indulge in drink, drugs and whatever...
this song is about amy winehouse today.. RIP.. Have a good listen facebookers..
@pedrofaba this album is definitely pop or post-punk
as relevant now, as when it was written then.........great song from a great band]
MY ALL TIME FAV PUNK BAND,BEEN A FAN OF THEM FOR OVER 35 YEARS
thanks man....awesome song, awesome album..
