Sting - I Was Brought To My Senses Lyrics

Alone with my thoughts this evening
I walked on the banks of Tyne
I wondered how I could win you
Or if I could make you mine
Or if I could make you mine

The wind it was so insistent
With tales of a stormy south
But when I spied two birds in a sycamore tree
There came a dryness in my mouth
Came a dryness in my mouth

For then without rhyme or reason
The two birds did rise up to fly
And where the two birds were flying
I swear I saw you and I
I swear I saw you and I

I walked out this morning
It was like a veil had been removed from before my eyes
For the first time I saw the work of heaven
In the line where the hills had been married to the sky
And all around me
Every blade of singing grass
Was calling out your name
And that our love would always last
And inside every turning leaf
Is the pattern of an older tree
The shape of our future
The shape of all our history
And out of the confusion
Where the river meets the sea
Came things I'd never seen
Things I'd never seen

I was brought to my senses
I was blind but now that I can see
Every signpost in nature
Said you belong to me

I know it's true
It's written in a sky as blue
As blue as your eyes
As blue as your eyes
If nature's red in tooth and claw
Like winter's freeze and summer's thaw
The wounds she gave me
Were the wounds that would heal me
And we'd be like the moon and sun
And when our courtly dance had run
Its course across the sky
Then together we would lie
And out of the confusion
Where the river meets the sea
Something new would arrive
Something better would arrive

I was brought to my senses
I was blind but now that I can see
Every signpost in nature
Said you belong to me
I was brought to my senses
I was blind but now that I can see
Every signpost in nature
Said you belong to me...

  8. W.... F....

Poetry. Renaissance in nature and eclectic. I hear probably 4 genres of musical styles in this song. Beautiful

  9. M.... P....

Only Sting could take a song written in 7/4 time, and make it sound like a normal groove.
He can make a pocket out of anything.

  22. M.... M....

this song brings always tears in my eyes...

  23. J.... B....

I would play this song non-stop for a week. I went to sleep and woke up to this song! I love you Elizabeth! I know you are the only girl I have ever loved. I will always love you.

  24. W.... ....

I played this song for my new girlfriend after spending 6 years in a frustrating and dead-end relationship. It had been difficult to break up, and I was somewhat down. And then this wonderful woman came into my life... This song just spoke so perfectly to me, even down to the blue eyes. Even now I can recall the emotion, the Eureka! moment I had when that dross from the past was washed away. It literally was like a veil had been removed from before my eyes.

My "new girlfriend" and I just celebrated our 18th wedding anniversary. How thankful I am that I was brought to my senses!

  25. J.... S....

He was extremely handsome in his forties. It's a pity that he decided to get rid of his long hair.

  26. C.... N....

Lovely song! Sting at his literary best!

  27. T.... J....

Heard this over the PA at a recent show, had to ask which album. Cannot get enough of this tune. Thanks for posting.

  28. A.... ....

The kind of Sting songs that make ego cops have to throw their badges away.

  29. J.... B....

My wife took a trip to Germany and I went nuts I played this song on repeat for weeks I would wake up and sleep to this song.... I love my wife, Elizabeth. I was blind but now I can see. Thank you Sting

  30. M.... H....

    what a great one.

  31. J.... H....

    two thumbs up. awesome....

  32. W.... ....

This song means a lot to me. When it came out, I was newly separated from my ex-wife and caring for our newborn son half of the time. It was a lonely time and a sad time, and also a wonderful, special time. This song made me think alternately of my baby boy, my ex, and a woman who showed me it was still possible for me to fall in love -- but mostly my baby boy. And yep, we both have blue eyes. I know the picture makes it hard to tell.

  33. V.... D....

Very Irish in its' overall feel!

    V.... D....

in the beginning. i love that this song explores many genres

  34. J.... B....

when he plays the Lick twice over the changes to Red Clay in 7/4

  35. c.... ....

    An authentic literary masterpiece.

Whenever I hear Sting singing a song like this, it's like my soul is speaking to me. I'm remembering someone I knew 6 years ago. Last year someone I knew happened to know where he's working now, and neither one of us are on facebook anymore, so last week I did something insane. I wrote a letter to him, sealed it in an envelope, and gave it to the receptionist at the front desk, feeling like some awkward crazy stalker ex girlfriend or something. I don't even know if he's still working there. I just wanted him to know that I miss him, even though I'm not sure why. But I haven't heard from him at all and I don't think I'm ever going to. I don't know if I ever really meant much of anything to him or if he's just being a player. I just know that I'm still not over it, I thought I would be by now, but I'm really not. He's gone.

    L.... M....

hopefully red You did everything you could...now let it go so something better can come along

  42. H.... ....

Sting's most underrated song, just awasome, simplemente fantastica

    H.... ....

    underrated? give me a break!

    H.... ....

I agree. A fantastic song that keeps evolving, from a celtic folk feel to epic jazz. Beautiful lyrics and sentiment too.

    H.... ....

but the n1 rated for me :) gangnam style is one of the most rated on youtube. do we need these ratings ? :)

    H.... ....

I agree, it thrills me every time I listen to this song.

  43. B.... M....

Love this song if you listen he's talking about a book it's call British birds.i love how he can show you what too look for when it happens.... :) :)

    B.... M....

'Red in tooth and claw' is probably a Tennyson reference, a poem he wrote for his friend who died young. But I love the feeling of the lyrics and song, feeling connected to the world/nature and being in love, seeing everything in perspective
