Stewart, Rod - Hard Lesson To Learn Lyrics

I drifted into the notion
That you were looking for me
I told myself that devotion
Would flow from your heart to me
When I looked into your eyes
Still no reflection did I see
Of love light glowing within there
That I hoped there would be

And it's a hard lesson to learn my friend
A hard lesson to learn
Sometimes you gonna get what you want
'Times you gonna get burned

I took a chance on emotion
Washing my heart out to see
A single wave on the ocean
You feel so distant from me
And there's a shadow dark upon your smile
A sadness living in your eyes
Storm clouds rolling in an outofdaught
Guess I been living alive

And it's a hard lesson to learn my friend
Hard lesson to learn
Sometimes you gonna get what you want
Sometimes you gonna get burned
Sometimes you gonna get what you want
Sometimes you gonna get burned
And it's a hard lesson to learn my friends
Hard lesson to learn
Sometimes you gonna get what you want
Sometimes you gonna get burned

I drifted into the notion
That you were looking for me
I told myself that devotion
Would flow from your heart to me
But when I looked into your beautiful eyes
Still no reflection did I see
Of love light glowing within there
That I kind o' hoped there would be

And it's a hard lesson to learn my friends
Hard lesson to learn
Sometimes you gonna get what you want
Sometimes you gonna get burned
Sometimes you gonna get what you want
Sometimes you gonna get burned
Sometimes you gonna get what you want
Sometimes you gonna get burned
Sometimes you gonna get what you want
Sometimes you gonna get burned

Yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah oh
Sometimes you gonna get what you want
Sometimes you gonna get burned

Fact : 1986 Song, that was on B-side, of single " Love Touch ". Now comes a 1st. Below is a comment by Co/Author of Song, and how it got in Rods hands. Peter Alexander, & I believe him. Fascinating Story as Google Confirms, man he mentions,
Joe Triplett as Author. Thank you, PETER.

  8. R.... P....

Another " HIDDEN GEM ", by ROD. This GENIUS , has More like this, than he had Hit's.
    Thanks ROD

    R.... P....

Part of Rods success is down to the fact he knows his voice can improve certain songs. This most impressive vocally was sailing. Have you seen him on here performing it live on Top Of The Pops?

    R.... P....

Your Perspective is Excellent. YES 1976. Earned a week trip, to London Jan. 72. Got my 1st girlfriend, as young teen. Rods 1st # 1. Maggie Mae. Been Die-Hard since. Voice a Instrument, Vocal Cord's, " Crown Jewel's ". Proud American, English Ancestor's.

Trying to write wiping away the tears. You nailed it Rod. x

  10. L.... T....

This song is a tearjerker, especially the part "sometimes you're going to get what you want and sometimes you're going to get burned.' Sounds like something my foster dad would say to me.

    L.... T....

    Thanks Rod for all... 🌹

  11. d.... W....

its such a great song ...wonder why its so hard to find it in any of Stewart compilation albums... shoulda been a #1 but, its crazy why it was never released as a single

Yet Another Excellent Observation, from you DAN. This is also a GREAT SONG, to refute inaccurate comments, from FACES ONLY Fan's. How can they say he Sold Out, when decade's of GEM'S Like This, Exist ? Poor Fool's, just Quit Listening. This is just ONE Example, of what they Missed.

  12. S.... C....

Kudos to Johnson for his good work, but you know there were a bunch of hometown fans in DC who recognized Claude Jones first.

  13. i.... ....

    Joe Triplett wrote this song

    i.... ....

innocentbystander34 right you are, along with Peter Blatchley...

  14. S.... C....

    I like the original better

  15. S.... C....

Wow it is the old Claude Jones tune ! - I had no idea Did Stewart did it

  16. T.... B....

    the best singer

  17. P.... A....

Joe Triplett and I co-authored this song in 1968 in the early days of Claude Jones. Most of the credit goes to Joe, and to Nils Lofgren who got it into Rod's hands.

  18. T.... A....

    One of his better songs.

    Thanks for posting.

  19. j.... c....

This should have been a hit what a beautiful song with alot of meaning.JC

  20. M.... ....

what a great song!!! the best R.S. song ever...underrated...
this song should have been released as a single and no doubt would surely become a number one hit!

  21. w.... ....

The song and the band Claude Jones was first recognized by then New York producer Donald Johnston. He was responsible for the eventual release of an ep for Claude Jones under his Company 1 and Gifford Productions banner in 1971. Over the years Johnston was involved with the management of famed New York City folk rock band The Blue Project,Blood, Sweat & Tears,SId Bernstein and the glory days of CBS.

Kudos to Johnson for his great work, but you know there were a bunch of us hometown fans in DC who recognized Claude Jones first.

Another gem that Warner Brothers didn't get , complete idiots !!! They squandered Rod's carreer , only his magnificent and rare talent rose above all , we fans know that !!!

  22. h.... ....

one of my best songs ever by Rod Stewart...i'm very surprised it's not as popular as it should be !!!

    h.... ....

I agree, dammit! I should be able to retire on the royalties, but haven't seen a dime since 1986.

  23. J.... N....

Rod always put someone's songs into a best selling hit!! e,g, First Cut is the Deepest.

  24. J.... N....

Not easy to find this song from Rod's CD! He sings this song so emotionally!

  25. d.... ....

Rod recorded it but it was written and originally recorded by Claude Jones/ Rosslyn Mountain Boys singer Joe Triplett and Claude Jones guitarist Peter Blachley...

  26. h.... ....

GREAT GREAT SONG...i'm very surprised no one saw or commented on it yet.
